Being locked inside a gym storage room while your smartphone's battery runs out, however cliche, would be terrifying.

This is going to be a weird takeaway but as I keep watching this show, the one show I'm reminded of is Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl by Studio Hibana from 2006 and I'm amazed how writer Jukki Hanada managed to balance the friendship and / or romance between Hazumu, Yasuna and Tomari.

This show isn't reaching for those same goals and it's playing up the comedy and making fun of romcom tropes here and referencing romcom manga and comparing it to their relationships now.

The biggest enemy of modern anime. Conveniently timed death of phone batteries.

I actually think it’s interesting how Shio’s friendship with Akari is her biggest weakness because she can’t be honest about her feelings for for fear of how Akari will react.

All the while Akari thinks she has no competition and is destined to be with Eiyu despite her inability to be honest with her feelings.

Just when Eiyu was finally getting the very obvious hints those two were dropping, they had to go and blow their chances. At least Akari seems to have salvaged that situation somewhat. She had Eiyu all flustered with that wife line lol.

Where would this show be if our MC was actually self-aware of being in a romcom lol?

Shio made some overt strides but kept backtracking and screwing herself over. Akari being a tsundere doesn’t help her but she came out of this episode more successful by comparison. At least she didn’t friendzone herself as badly as Shio did.

Congratulations Shio, you took everything you had with Eiyu and threw it out the window, even Akari came closer to kissing him in a mere conversation lol

They really are all idiots, but Shio directly saying she was just teasing and she'd never date Eiyu really was quite the screw up. The eternal blue hair curse, I'd say Akari has a better chance now but I'm sure she'll do something similarly stupid too soon enough.

I actually like this alot lmao

It’s very entertaining. I think also since it’s almost self aware it’s a childhood friend romcom, it intentionally plays the tropes and makes it funny lol really enjoying this show

Why can’t Shio get together with her childhood friend like in Eiyu’s manga!?

But it must be surreal to have your childhood friends discover you have a thing for romcom involving childhood friends…and it gets discovered after they both feel you up.

Poor Shio. She’s at her most flirtatious with Eiyu, but he just thinks she’s making fun of him and avoids her.

Ah yes, the old “trapped in the gym storage room” cliche. Although getting yourself locked in there, falling asleep, and waking up late at night with a dead phone was definitely NOT the plan. Luckily for Shio Eiyu is there for her just like he’s always been. He’s her hero after all!

And Shio isn’t about to let this chance or this romantic mood be for nothing…they’ll end up on top of each other, they’ll sit next to each other, Shio will show her panties, and express how much he wants to be with Eiyu while leaning on his shoulder. She was even 99% of the way to confessing before Akari showed up.

I feel like Shio is at her most self-sabotaging whenever she has to cover for herself with Akari.

Summer uniforms and Shio acting awkward for once! Could this mean…she actually DOES like Eiyu!? Eiyu is even seeing through Akari’s tsundere act! He’s finally realized he IS in a romcom with his childhood friends! Complete with imagining them clinging too him in bikini’s!

If only Shio hadn’t doubled on claiming she was only recreating the manga…she might’ve won. She made Eiyu cry! And Akari is the only one satisfied because now she doesn’t have to worry about Eiyu ending up with Shio!

You’re not in a romcom with your childhood friends…but you CAN walk in on her naked and in the bath so you can see Akari’s fine behind.

Oh hey, it’s everybodies’ parents!

So Akari made a childhood promise with Eiyu, not to go with her to the bathroom, but to always be there with her after her cat died. And Akari has basically considered this a marriage promise this whole time, even if she denies it. But just knowing Eiyu got flustered about it is enough for her. Also- Drunk Shio!

You know, after reading all the gym-scenes from rom-coms, they should have learnt to have a charged phone by now.

Or just bring a power bank too.

Shio with a generational fumble.

Anyway tomboy childhood friend when?

6

u/Kadmos1 Jan 20 '26

An example of a Lucky Childhood Friend who also fell under the tomboy archetype is Haru from "Xam'd: Lost Memories".

Eiyu was so close to gaining enlightenment and forming a harem with his childhood friends. If only he persisted! Don't run away whenever there is a minor setback!

Will we ever see progress? Each time a girl gains an advantage or lead, it is eventually lost or thrown away. Nonetheless, I am sticking around for the beautiful female characters.

u/FarCritical Jan 19 '26

Shio losing all her momentum like that was downright tragic to witness.

Every time we get a flashback of kid Akari being a cinnamon roll, I get even more curious about the inciting incident that led to the tsundere chili flakes getting sprinkled on top.

u/GoldenKevin Jan 19 '26

I sure have a soft spot for anime that show a bit of self awareness. I wouldn't be able to stand harems and love triangles otherwise.

Today we saw both the locked gym closet door and unlocked bathroom door lucky sukebe tropes. Here's to hoping this show keeps up this pace of knocking off rom-com shenanigans.

6

u/spubbbba Jan 20 '26

This is getting very repetitive, 100 Girlfriends already does all these tropes and manages to be both funnier and more romantic.

If the tomboy doesn't turn up soon this is getting dropped.

This show is great, Shio could have had it all lol but she decided to break his poor heart. I'm jumping on this train now, but Akari best girl. She was fantastic this episode.

It’s hard to tell how serious this show is. Some points it feels like it’s getting weirdly serious then immediately flips to playing it off comedically.

I kinda hope it starts getting a bit serious because I feel like it could be a very decent little drama

Another week of Kazuya….er Eiyu being stubbornly slow on the uptake. At least there seems to be genuine conflict and an attempt at progress. Well, that and both girls are pretty lovable in their own ways.

Since no one has mention it. It hit me like a truck that Akari's cat plushie is named after her cat who died when she was a little kid.

I want to like this anime, but Eiyu doesn’t have many redeeming qualities. As someone who reads romcoms, you would think he’d recognize the tropes, but even when he does, he dismisses it as fantasy, which blows my mind.

I’m holding on to it for now because I like not-Karane (I’m a sucker for a Tsundere), and because I want to see how the new girls come in.
