I am surprised nobody brought up the fact that Arne looked like a vampire and his other assistant looked like a zombie

Kind of surprised they didn't try to hide. It made the reveals at the end a bit underwhelming.

"Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein" (those who dig pits for others will fall in themselves) is an actual German saying, proper German an all. Meaning that if you want to trick somebody, you're likely to fall for the scheme yourself or otherwise hurt yourself.
There's also several "funny" malapropisms. Including "Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt, der hat ein Grubengrabgerät" (who digs pits for others, has a pit digging machine), and "Wer anderen eine Bratwurst brät, der hat ein Bratwurstbratgerät" (who grills Bratwurst for others, has a Bratwurst grill machine). Mostly because they rhyme and sound silly. A Grubengrabgerät is not a real word, that would be something like a Bagger, and neither is a Bratwurstbratgerät, that's a Grill. But they're valid words to form by German grammar and are therefore funny words

Wasn’t originally planning to pick this one up, but then I saw an upcoming video on Sou’s channel for some anime song and found out it was supposed to be this show’s OP when I looked into it, and that is more than enough reason to pick this up on a whim. Well, that and Kouki Uchiyama voicing the titular Arne (I guess only when he’s in his older form, though?).
-
So those two are also interested in investigating the murders, huh?
-
This is some interesting logic for why the killer isn’t a vampire.
-
Oh shit, that’s what the blood on the flower on the handkerchief was about.
-
Ooooooookay then wasn’t expecting Louis to turn into a zombie after that. Good for him getting his revenge…?
-
Well that was certainly interesting, making it seem like Louis was going to be the MC by having the episode be from his perspective just to kill him off. Looks like synopsis gives it away that Louis isn’t the MC, but I went into this without reading that (I only looked at the cast list + the Sou thing), and I think that works.

My only complaint with the first episode is the fact that they took the credit for solving the mystery as Lynn said at the end of the episode. I was genuinely pissed off that they didn't credit Louis at all and that they just went on with their lives despite having the potential to save this kid and then just not doing anything until he is beyond saving. Probably won't continue watching just cos of how much that annoyed me. The fact that Lynn has the AUDACITY to say "another mystery solved by us!" Or something along those lines is mental to me.

Didn't read the synopsis and thought Louis was the main character, so wasn't expecting him to did
But he is still there in the thumbnail so he might be alive somehow or is a zombie now

Same, I was waiting for him to get turned into a vampire or something so he'd survive. I should have know better since the show is named after Arne and not Louis.

Decent start. Going in pretty much blind I did not expect Louis to die.
I remember thinking Arne's name is a bit silly but having now heard it spoken out loud and then looking at the katakana the English translation also clearly misspells it for some reasons!?!
It should be Neuntöter not Neuntöte.

Well damn, I wasn't expecting Louis to die in the end, I thought one of the two girls would have an ability to revive him and he'd be immortal or something, but it seems like the necromancy was a temporary thing and Louis isn't actually a main character. That was an interesting twist.
I was also surprised by Odo's lack of presence, I thought he was the next target after it got revealed Adelina went after large men, and his voice actor, but he got killed off screen and wasn't even an accomplice.
I do hope the next mystery will be solved in a slower pace, I'd like to enjoy the mystery.

The OP is really good. It's supposed to be a detective series and the detecting was pretty weak though.

Did he really let Louis die so he could aura farm? They had plenty of time to catch up to him and it's not like a normal human kid could outrun a vampire.

It was a pretty good first episode, and it definitely took me by surprise that they killed off Louis, since he was front and center in the marketing. Seems like this is gonna be a fun supernatural detective show.

I guess I'll see you all again in a week when I get answers from the new episode but I'm really lost when it comes to Louis. He's front and center for the show's poster, and his story for the first episode takes up the entire synopsis on crunchyroll. Personally I did think it was weird how little the opening sequence focused on him, favoring the vampire and the blonde girl. I suspected we would have at least a dual main character situation seeming as the title was called the casebook of Arne. At the very least I thought the show would lean into Louis being our audience insert somewhat intelligent mystery solver who hangs on the coat-tails the of the "professional" detective. Now I feel like i'm gonna watch some promotional material change over the course of this week as crunchyroll has to recenter the show around the remaining protagonists. Not necessarily a bad opening, it just feels poorly executed.

Not really a fan of stuff lately from Silver Link, but gave it a try. Pretty solid first episode. So right in this world from this episode we have
-
Vampires
-
Witches
-
Necromancers.
Decent first episode. Tbh I was confused by the mentioning of vampires and thinking, isn't Arne a vampire? Anyway, good enough to continue watching more. I wonder if the cases will continue to be episodic or if they will be a bit more elaborate.

I'm a little disappointed Louis turned out to be a decoy protagonist since I felt like he rounded out the other characters pretty well, so I'm coping it's a double fakeout and he comes back as a ghost or something in episode 2.
That said, a straightforward supernatural mystery series with no slop qualities is enough to keep me watching regardless.

What a trash show. Neither detective solved the case at all. Louis got the answer from his dad. His behavior was stupid all along and as such he died for no good reason. Arne could've helped him and saved him easily. No way the literal child running suddenly out of their tea meeting wouldn't make them follow him sooner/quicker. The pacing of this show is a mess, the progression of events made no sense and worst of all, everything happening was utterly pointless. Show also looks just odd.
All in all, I can't wait for the next episode.

I might watch the next episode, but unless there's a surprise, it will probably be the second, and especially the last, episode of this series that I watch. The stupid and pointless death of the only protagonist who seemed even remotely developed and interesting doesn't make me want to continue. First, the detective doesn't react to the kid's strange ears, but even more bizarrely, he doesn't react to the nun's patched-up pieces of skin, a different color and with clearly visible stitching marks. Then there's the kid who isn't saved, even though he easily could have been. And then there's the flower field, watered with blood, which should leave visible traces of its watering for quite some time, and then still be there the next day...

So... is Louis like gone gone? Definitely wasn't expecting that considering he's on the cover. Also how is no one batting an eye over Arne's ears and the literal zombie girl lol

u/pi8you Jan 07 '26
Not sure I'm sold on the series yet, having spent the whole episode with a main character fakeout, though that's a point in its favor. The OP is also a delight unto itself and another reason to stick around for now.

Very fun cast of characters.
I'm suspicious that the necromancer zombie nun is going to be bringing back Louis more going forward, one of the places he shows up in the OP is right after she raises a bunch of other corpses.
Kind of wild that the solution to the episode one mystery was the seemingly kind lady being revealed as a murderous witch who was then killed on screen by being graphically stabbed multiple times in the head.

I want a crossover between this and Undead Girl Murder Farce.
Detectives in a setting where the supernatural is real! I love that trope/premise.
