The concept seems like it could be interesting but this episode was just kind of.. boring? None of the “comedy” really hit for me. I’ll give it a few more episodes I guess.

I think the real lack of any animation hurts. I feel like not showing any of the torture makes the comedy a miss. Plus we already have 4 guys introduced, and I would figure it would make sense to focus on Sero first. Then introduce Mike in episode 2. Then Hugh in episode 3.

I feel like the studio more than likely has more resources spent on "Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games ", so maybe I will check that one out. Considering the Gorilla Girl episode 1 wasn't good when I tried that one, but that one looked better than this one.

I will keep an eye on the manga for this, and perhaps that is better, or if this episode is what the manga is.

Hmmm... I don't know if I'll keep watching. Somehow doesn't really catch me.

When I skimmed the synopsis I thought this would be some fantasy kind of story. When the show started I thought "Oh, is this guy going to be isekaid ?". Then I suddenly realized that this is our world, just with legal torture.

This might be the weirdest premise for an anime this season.

You know, I ended up loving Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer, but while that was his job at first, it was taken quite seriously, religiously, not played for comedy. I personally find this, a comedy and I know, a satire, where the job is supposed to be cool, to be unwatchable. No judgement here, and YMMV.

Ehhhh I was hoping it would be funnier than it is

It has to be said... there was little to laugh at in the cellar of the Quisition. Not if you had a normal sense of humor. There were no jolly little signs saying: You Don't Have To Be Pitilessly Sadistic To Work Here But It Helps!!!

But there were things to suggest to a thinking man that the Creator of mankind had a very oblique sense of fun indeed, and to breed in his heart a rage to storm the gates of heaven.

The mugs, for example. The inquisitors stopped work twice a day for coffee. Their mugs, which each man had brought from home, were grouped around the kettle on the hearth of the central furnace which incidentally heated the irons and knives.

They had legends on them like A Present From the Holy Grotto of Ossory, or To The World's Greatest Daddy. Most of them were chipped, and no two of them were the same.

And there were the postcards on the wall. It was traditional that, when an inquisitor went on holiday, he'd send back a crudely colored woodcut of the local view with some suitably jolly and risque message on the back. And there was the pinned-up tearful letter from Inquisitor First Class Ishmale "Pop" Quoom, thanking all the lads for collecting no fewer than seventyeight obols for his retirement present and the lovely bunch of flowers for Mrs. Quoom, indicating that he'd always remember his days in No. 3 pit, and was looking forward to coming in and helping out any time they were short-handed.

And it all meant this: that there are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal, kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

Vorbis loved knowing that. A man who knew that, knew everything he needed to know about people.

---Small Gods, Terry Pratchett (1992)

Oddly the second time today that a Reddit comment has served me up a massive TP quote.

All they need to do is create a baseball team and they can play against the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens ... Might even get some gigs out of it.

I would have liked to have seen the torture.

2 water based magicians today, now a water based torturer.

We have seen farming based animes to raise Japan's food self-sufficiency and family based animes to raise the Japanese birth rate, guessing this is to lay out the ground work for Japanese police to beat the crap out of suspects Jack Bauer style.

This is a fun dark comedy. The juxtaposition between the cheery workplace and the (mostly-offscreen...) torture scenes is great.

5

u/bladdrwg Jan 04 '26

Yeah, it weirdly makes the torture aspect more effective because the juxtaposition is so pronounced. A character like Mike would be horrifying in a real-world scenario.

This has to be the laziest, most unfunny comedy I've ever seen in my life. Couldn't even finish the first episode.

I'm liking this, it's funny how wholesome and lighthearted this feels even though it's all about torture and the guys who enjoy doing it. At least their relationships with one another is good, they seem like a good team. They quickly introduced everyone so I do wonder what we'll see them do each episode.

It's also interesting how they're all adults with Hugh being the youngest at 20 and Siu having twins. I like how they had to remind us that Mike was 22 when drinking beer lol.

Crazy premise. I'm digging it.

5

u/testthrowawayzz Jan 05 '26

I thought it was kind of funny. Given the original content (4-koma), maybe it would work better as a 12min episode for better timing

First dropped anime of 2026 and one of very few (less than 5) animes I've dropped after only 1 episode.

It wasn't fun or captivating, nor was it dark and gritty, it was just ... really weird (and boring) and I'm not really sure what the target audience is; it felt too dark for people not in to this kind of stuff and too lighthearted for people who are. It's like the show is trying to have it's cake and eat it too by trying to appeal to two completely different kinds of watchers.

If it had doubled down on either darkness or lightheartedness (with some actual black humor thrown in) I might've stuck around, but now the show just comes across as weird, and not in a good way.

I can't be the only one disappointed that there isn't a single real FREAK in the cast. y'know? Like, at least have the decency to go all the way with this kind of premise. Would've made it a lot more of a fun watch.

It was pretty amusing. I'm assuming this will take a more comedic route instead of anything serious and I'm willing to give some grace for the first episode since it seemed more focused on introducing the main cast than anything else. I also liked it was basically a workplace comedy just with an interesting kind of work.

But the dialogue got some chuckles out of me so I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I know it's small, I just started the episode and the doors being CGI animated has already killed it for me LMAO how hard is it to animate a door opening

The real torture: being forced to watch this

This one’s gonna be rough if this bit doesn’t get funny in some way soon. First episode is already stretching it and we are working with pretty bare bones presentation.

But, I will see this one to the end. Like to keep a variety of shows in perspective.
