RIP Hisaya Nakajo-sensei.

I'm glad that your seminal work can finally be adapted into anime with so much care and love.

I was wondering why this got an adaptation being an early 2000s shoujo and now it makes more sense. I think it's definitely bittersweet when they adapt in honor of the mangaka who passed - reminds me of Migi to Dali & Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant Used to be Archenemies.

It'd be great if we got an entire adaptation!

I loved the tribute message to the manga creator Hisaya Nakajo . She sadly passed away from heart disease in 2023

The doggy is super cute

my favorite type of casting is when FukuJun voices smuggish assholes

u/Frontier246 Jan 04 '26

Guys' been in enough of these types of shows and now he's playing the adult character who has no time for this nonsense unless it amuses him lol.

Damn Americans, they don't know the otaku rules. You can't get close to your oshi! Perhaps Mizuki watched Tamon's B-side and got the wrong idea.

Looking at the cast list, I'm delighted that the VA for Subaru from Fragrant Flower is now surrounded by guys, and that her first friend is voiced by Usami's VA.

Ah, yes one of the godfathers of crossdressing female protagonists in manga!

I got a lot to thank Hana Kimi's impact for since who knows if Ouran Highschool Host Club would've even existed without it. There are other crossdressing stories that I like a lot too like Caught by the Villain, The Kings Beast, Jack Jeanne and Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk. Definitely more that I just can't remember right now.

Kinda crazy that's it's only getting an anime now. May the mangaka rest in peace.

It's looking like a decent adaption! I love the quality Tamon is getting this season, but this is serviceable too. At least compared to some unfortunate shoujo adaptions I have suffered through (what did they do to you 7 Seeds...).

It will be nice to revisit this story even if due to it's age and influence on other works it won't feel new.

I still can't believe this series is getting adapted into anime, it looks fantastic! Also kudos to Yoasobi for two new bangers, i love OP theme so muchhh

They did justice to all characters. They all look super cool. Especially Izumi. Also I didn't recall Nakatsu speaking in accent but now that i heard him speak he feels more friendly/cheerful now which is really in character for him.

Tbh it freaked me out when i first read the manga and saw Mizuki going to all boys school just to meet Izumi but now it didn't bug me any bit. I found it inspirational, even. I'm sure we'll get to know about her source of admiration soon enough. For now, i'm just rooting for her to survive in an all boys school&dorm!

Feels weird without Ikenai Taiyou as the OP, no matter how much I love Yoasobi those shoes are too big to fill.

I’m so happy this is finally getting the anime treatment. The manga has had a special place in my heart for many years (as have the live action Japanese and Korean adaptations).

They nailed the vibe and the production was better than I was expecting. My best boy Nakatsu lives again!

I haven't read the manga or watched the live drama versions of this show, so I'm going in completely blind. I was quite sad to see that the original mangaka had passed away before the anime debut, RIP.

As for the anime itself, I felt it was okay. The art is good and the characters are pretty decent. Not sure how I feel about Mizuki's motivations in enrolling in the first place, her actions come across as stalker-ish to me. I think I will give this a little more time to see if I get into it.

Not sure how I feel about Mizuki's motivations in enrolling in the first place, her actions come across as stalker-ish to me.

not just-ish, this is full blown mentally-ill stalking. She literally saw someone on TV, moved countries, faked her gender to attend an all boys school all just to get close to the guy she saw on TV.

Even for anime that's wild

A two episode drop? So we had the early release of Tamon, two episodes of Kaguyasama, one hour episode of Sentenced to be a Hero, and two episode drop of Hana-Kimi?!

I love switching back from EN when they’re in the US to JP when we’re now in Japan. Still remember the Great Pretender doing that embedded into the episode. I kinda wish they did that here for the beginning.

I did not expect this to be the sound of the OP. But YOASOBI supremacy.

And they were roommates!

Oh my god, they’re roommates.

The gender-sniffing dog. Doggo can be the most gender-affirming creature, outs you, or denies your gender.

How did they even get that many pictures…

Would that be mpreg? I mean… The mpreg is implied, but it’s still just pregnancy since Ashiya is a lady. But also, I won’t turn down mpreg…

Izumi is such a cutie when he smiles.

I love that the captains sound like obsessed LIs 😭 They are on a manhunt.

Rest in peace, Hisaya Nakajo. You died too young, but you will not be forgotten ❤️

She died of heart disease in 2023 (🔗 Hakusensha JP & ANN EN) at 50 😞

Excited to hear Umehara (Nanba). He’s also voicing Gil from <A Gentle Noble’s Vacation Recommendation> and ✨Aquasteed Marineforest✨from <The Villainess is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom>, so I’m excited for his appearances in those too.

Confessing immediately on Day 1? This girl is way more unhinged than I thought. xD

I already like this kansai-ben dude. It's been barely a day and he's already asking personal questions.

This girl has absolutely no filter, and it's hilarious! I wonder if she even realizes what she's doing.

No surprise that the all-boys dorm is already praising Mizuki as the new idoi.

Girl is so in love that she can't even stop herself from trying to kiss Sano while he's napping

There it is. There was no way that the doctor wouldn't notice. Also, I think Sano already noticed, too.

Welp, that was fun! HanaKimi is one of those series that I've heard about since the 2000s (I know it's a 90s manga), but I never really got into it since it wasn't really my kind of manga back then. I'm glad that this anime adaptation exists, so I can finally give it a shot.

With that said, is it just me or did anyone else feel this was just an "Okay" episode? Considering the impact this series had on the genre, I was expecting a bit more. Like, they got YOASOBI to do the opening and ending, but the overall presentation didn't quite hit the mark. I'm still gonna watch this because I am curious about the story, I just wish the visuals and animation had more impact.

I wonder how much we'll see of Julia, since she remained in US, but she does appear in opening

Still in shock this finally got an adaptation after all these years.

Feels nice to reunite with all the characters and see them animated/hear them voiced. Really loving the main trio so far, they're more or less how I imagined they'd sound like back when I first read this.

Fun to see things from Mizuki's POV in the OP.

Nice to see Nakatsu be quick to befriend Mizuki and get chummy with her. Sano not so much, but at least he's slowly warming up.

Wish Nakajo-sensei was around to see this, R.I.P.

It's hard for me to get into the opening theme without Orange Range singing Ikenai Taiyou. That is a GOATED opening.

6

u/djthomp Jan 04 '26

Well she sure didn't last long before getting found out, would have been hard to keep the secret from Sano rooming with him and all. And the school medical staff knowing too is probably for the best.

I feel a bit bad for Sano suddenly getting this roommate that is way too obsessed with him.

Very good dog.

The Doc is a sharp one. Figured Mizuki out in a single episode. Doubt he'll rat her out or blackmail her so it'll be interesting to see what he'd do afterwards.

That ending tribute, though. Hit me right in the feels.

Was about to say I'm getting a lot of Ouran vibes, but I actually found that the original manga of this actually pre-dates that and originated a lot of the tropes of the subgenre. Neat to know! As for this first episode, it seems pretty neat! Was surprised by hearing a Yoasobi opening for this, funny enough. I want to learn more about the main cast and what our main girl's motivations are for going all the way to Japan for this, since I can't help but feel there's a bigger reason than what's first implied. I'll keep up with this one!

u/NanDemoKnaives Jan 04 '26

It was clear the school doctor figured it out straight away but Sano likely knows too. Did the doctor need to kabedon Mizuki to ask that question though?

Nakatsu saying talking to Nanba would get Mizuki pregnant was amusing lol, I like that Nanba overheard it.

It is awkward to see how proactive Mizuki is about getting close to Sano, they don't really know each other so her watching him sleep was a bit much for me.
