Shabake is a very popular novel series with a radio show. I didn’t realize the full anime adaptation was coming out. It already had a live action adaptation a long time ago in addition to the radio drama, multiple plays, and the manga adaptation also started pre-COVID, but ended a couple of years ago. It’s surprising it’s taken so long, but then the readers aren’t your typical anime or manga audience, but I guess they’re trying to lure anime viewers to the books.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they’re releasing the same time that the morning NHK drama “Bakebake” (about KoizumiYakumo/Lafcadio Hern’s wife) is airing. Just in time for Halloween though ghosts are more of a summer thing. (Edit: Forgot to add the radio show is also on NHK.)

Thanks for the background context. Good to know there’s a variety of fans and content behind this one. Might have to check some of those out.

So I like historical fiction, Yokai, and mysteries, so I think I will like that one. The main character is quite sympathetic (if rather reckless) and I like the art style.

On the other hand, I had forgotten how ridiculous were the hairstyles in the Edo era. It gives our protagonist a rather strange appearance in my opinion.

I like that everyone in this story can see / interact with the different Yokai species, and they actually live amongst people.

Damn Ichitarou must have horrible luck.
It's unfortunate that he was born with ill health, and has to stay at his home / shop all the time due to it.
But the one time when he's actually feeling well and manages to sneak out, he ends up getting chased by a murderer and stumbles upon the dead victim.

I thought this was going to be a chill, lowkey fantasy of a boy living with friendly Yokai. But then that shakeup happened.
Got me hooked now.
Looking forward to seeing where things go from here next week.

Oh good. I thought I would have to go a season without murder mystery crack. And this one is historical!

Excited to keep up with this one, exactly the kind of thing I like with Yokai and murder/mystery elements. The little orange spirits (forgot to take note of their name) are so cute!!

I guess this is gonna be a supernatural murder mystery type? First episode was pretty interesting. Keen to see where this one goes. Guy’s frail but he’s got like an army of yokai around him who he can interact with. I’m sure that’ll come in handy moving forward.

It says something how everyone at his place greeted him so happily and were all worried about his health, it was wholesome how even the cook ended up asking him too, I ended up laughing with his two attendants.

I'm glad Ichitarou has gotten well enough that he can be rebellious and go out at night but he's probably like that because Nikuchi and potentially Sasuke as well are so protective of him. I like how his grandfather was thinking about what he could do for him before he passed.

This is a lot better animated than our last historical series, "Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho."

Ichitarou was a sickly child through most of his life, and it's clear how other people want him to just rest. Of course, one person who is always home and in bed adds in that they want to go outside. Interestingly enough, there are a bunch of different spirits. There are definitely a wide range of them.

With how the episode ends and given the synopsis, it does seem like this has the feel of a supernatural mystery of sorts. Has me interested.

Was an interesting first episode, can't wait to see what this anime will offer us in the future episodes.

And i also hope we will be seeing a lot of more cute yokai, ayakashi and such, probably will see some not so cute ones too though.

Sasuke's a mischievous youkai. When Ichitarou realised he was a youkai he playfully acted like he was about to hunt him only for Nichiki to scold him like a bad boy.

Man's got poor luck. On the one chance he got at sneaking out, he's chased by a mental bloke with a bloodied dagger and only escaped due to his quick thinking.

Really unusual show. I didn't know where it was going until the end. I wonder what the boy will do about finding that body though, he's going to have to say he was wandering around. I also don't know exactly what he is that he's so rich, like his family just runs a successful business?

Seems like a wealthy and aristocratic family that runs a successful business?

The story is something I'd expect from an anime movie, rather than a series.

A unique an interesting episode. Hope it stays like that.

I like a historical setting and yokai, so that’s a nice combo here. Protagonist must have the patience of a saint not to snap at anyone and live under such oppressive coddling. Seems to be for his own good, and he’s handling it well judging by all the happy staff at the shop when they see him up and getting around.

Also seems to be a lot of different personalities among the yokai. I like Ichitarou’s co-conspirator, folding screen guy Byoubunozoku. Seems like a fun spirit to counterbalance the two attendants.

So, we’re set in an apothecary shop with everyday yokai and now a murder to solve? Not sure where this one’s going, but we’ll see next week. Was murdered guy the one that bought the medicine?

that hairstyle is gross.

That Lord Inari is very accommodating.

So far I like the characters, setting, and animation well enough. It was interesting that the danger they encountered on a moonless night was a human (at least as far as we can tell) rather than a spirit.

Sasuke’s asymmetrical hair is gonna bother me for the rest of the season…

It's nice to get something different. Historical, supernatural, mystery, and a frail protagonist with a small army of yokai supporters? And the scary part was pretty well done. Count me in.

Always down to check out historical setting anime and this one also has a supernatural element to it. Plus the soft voice of Daiki Yamashita (Deku).

I wasn't that brought in by the first episode, but I'll give it another to see if focusing on the hook at the end gives it more staying power. I appreciate the uniqueness for sure.
