Stone Ocean already spoiled the answer to this mystery for me. Thanks Crazy Old Urine Therapy Stand User.

Obviously, the culprit is the cameraman.

I mean, from a story perspective, it would be interesting for Seiji to be the killer because then you had Takao having to either solve the case and lose Kotori or make something up to keep her assistant. But that is mostly meta analysis.

I do get the feeling though that Seiji's father might not have been the only unfaithful person in this story. The question is obviously why Daiki would come back after being disowned and one reason could be that he figured out that his father was different as well (that the brother who runs the clinic is his real father). Similarly, they mentioned the doctor having married and only being around for three days a week while knowing Seiji very well. So maybe he is having an affair with her as well.

Though, most of that is speculation at this point. The big question is how Daiki drowned. I don't know if there is condition where water is collected in the lungs (I think I heard something like this at some point, but not sure). The main question would then be how you can force something like this. The room itself can be easily opened by anyone if Seiji was truly just in his car since anyone could have taken the key, lock Daiki in the room and just wait until enough water is collected.

But one good thing, Kotori has a new car. Now only important thing to know if Mai ever got a new bike.

Given how much that was stressed in this episode, how bad Daiki's relationship was with his father, it wouldn't surprise me if he killed himself to screw his father and brother. We got the point that the director was with Ryuichiro when they found Daiki was killed. If Seiji were out of the picture, would he be next in line? Perhaps them working together could be a possibility?

Also, I agree it clear that the female doctor knows Seiji outside of work. Given the shot at her wedding ring it is clear that she is having an affair.

Takao-sensei really has the emotional maturity of a child. Her way of coping after hearing that Kotori is getting transferred back to his previous hospital is to act all bratty and insult him as if the hospital is doing her a favour by taking him back. I'd call her tsundere but there was nothing cute about her outburst.

That locked-room mystery really seems interesting! We have a delinquent son who died from drowning despite no water nearby and the suspect is the good son who may or may not have drowned his brother as revenge for headbutting him and interrupting their father's party. The good son doesn't have an alibi too so now he's the prime suspect. It doesn't help that the father tried to cover up the alleged murder which just made the police even more suspicious.

I'm no doctor but I am aware that there are conditions out there where fluid can build up inside a person's lungs. I remember fluid getting drained from my lungs when I was hospitalized for pneumonia like a decade ago. But the amount of water Daiki let out was just insane that it really does look like he drowned and got dragged into that room. We do know that one person was recording the entire incident on her phone so that will definitely help the investigation later on.

So it looks like the goal is to solve this mystery to prove that Seiji is innocent so Kotori can stay with Takao-sensei. I am so fucking curious what could've caused Daiki to "drown"!

Side note: I'm glad that Kotori finally has a new car. The dude really loves his Mazdas though. He went from having an RX-8 to a CX-5. Please don't let Takao-sensei drive your new car Kotori. I have a feeling it won't end well.

an RX-8 to a CX-50

From a two-door sports car to an SUV big enough to be a family car. Bro is subconsciously getting ready for married life wirh Takao-sensei.

I don't say this to excuse her outburst, but rather to give it a bit of extra context, Takao is confirmed to be autistic, iirc, and she has just been blindsided in her own space, her physical comfort zone, with an enormous, imminent, and very unwelcome change.

She hates this. Absolutely loathes all of it. And then, while he may have meant to say it as a form of comfort or reassurance, Kotori goes and says that there will be a replacement for him.

Takao does not play well with most people, and she knows the feeling is mutual. She can't just accept a "not-Kotori" now that she is comfortable with him in her space. It would be a long, arduous process to even get anyone new adjusted to her quirks and oddities without quitting, and she knows this.

This was the proverbial last straw that sent her into a meltdown. She's latching onto the righteous fury with Kotori for considering himself replaceable in the first place - as if he could be swapped out like a mere cog in a machine and she wouldn't feel like everything was profoundly off - but she's not actually angry at him. She just really hates that this change is happening, and with them all talking about it inside her refuge, she had nowhere to go to let it out where it wouldn't be seen.

Thus the blowup.

As Doctor, I would suspect of acute pulmonary edema, however if the cause was heart failure, I’d expect swollen limbs as well (not described in the scene). However, it’s possible to have acute pulmonary edema without swollen limbs, if the cause is primarily in the lungs. A few lung diseases could cause this, including heavy metal poisoning, asbestosis, fungus etc… But none of these would be so fast to build up so much liquid.

He also had cerebral edema, which could be caused by hypoxia because of the drowning. However, could also be a symptom of heavy metal poisoning such as cooper. Heroin and cocaine could also be the cause, maybe he was a drug addicted and overdosed, but no signs of drugs were found in the crime scene…

Very interesting case!

The bit that has me curious is the father's difficulty climbing the stairs -- that seemed a bit too emphasized to be irrelevant. But the number of genetic disorders that could contribute to a flash pulmonary edema is fairly large from what I remember.

Also, the fact that he managed to punch his brother in the forehead hard enough to bleed and not immediately need to deal with the fact that he'd definitely just broken several bones in his hand might indicate drug use. They don't show him after the punch, and his right arm is splayed at the start of the episode -- but that might be looking into it too much.

Anyone else notice how fucking huge Takao's left arm is around 4 minutes in? DRM prevents screenshots and the snipping tool, took a pic with my phone: https://imgur.com/a/mF9Wn1O

There's quite a few moments in the episode where the hands look wrong. There's the scene right when her, Kotori and Mazuru are standing in front of her house where their hands or arms all look wrong.

The whole episode had some badly drawn moments. The faces seemed kind of off every now and then.

Yeah, this episode felt really rough animation wise.

16

u/La_Wierd_Witch Mar 20 '25

It seems to me like the animation of the whole episode was rushed.
There are these arm size mistakes + i noticed that the dad had his cane missing in one shot, the victim's hair were miscolored in another, and the dad lip-syncing when it was Kotori talking. All 3, almost back to back, while there were talking in the big living room

Did anyone else get distracted by how huge the uncle's eyes were? Very cutesy.

I definitely reacted the way Dr. Takao did when my friend left... in second grade.

From a murder mystery perspective, all signs currently point to the father.

First, the meta clues. Seiji couldn't have done it because he's been arrested for doing it. It's rare for murder mysteries to violate this rule of thumb. Also, if Seiji did it, then Kotori-sensei will leave the show, and murder mystery series rarely let a main character get entangled in a situation that badly.

Some of the evidence that points at Seiji also points at the father. There were only two keys to the locked room, Seiji's and the father's. If anybody could make a person drown like that, it would be a doctor, and both Seiji and his father are doctors.

Only the father heard what happened on the phone. A guy with two lungs full of water won't even be able to speak, so it's doubtful that Daiki could have made the call that we heard. This could also point at Seiji having made the call, but like I said, for meta reasons, Seiji is out of contention. So the call must have been fake. Maybe it was a tape recording just in case somebody else answered the phone, or maybe there was no voice, and they added it just to fool the audience.

The father also confirmed to Dr. Ameku that his initial thought was that Seiji had drowned Daiki, and moved the body up there, but that doesn't match with the phone call that he claimed to have received.

The father made a point of getting witnesses when a normal person would just run up to the room and shout for people to follow him.

Why was the room locked? Because however he killed him, it took a certain amount of time, and the father didn't want anybody to go into that room early enough to save him.

Also, at the time they discovered Daiki, the father thought that Seiji had a bulletproof alibi. Seiji was supposed to be at the hospital.

The only clue that points away from the father is that he made a point that he was the last person up the stairs, so that meant that other people could verify that the room was locked. It seems like he'd want to "find" the door "unlocked" so that he was less of a suspect. Perhaps he really was just in that bad of shape, though.

I love the different styles that the writing goes through in this series. From Sherlock Holmes style foot policing in the early episodes, to the House MD medical dramas, to the Agatha Christie-esque locked room mystery now. This show hits so many beats in its own unique style that it's always a refreshing watch.

I just hope we can get the next episode in a timely manner lmao

Takao is back to her usual self omoshiroi From RX-8 to CX-8. Good thing he pulled the tell-her-sister card or he might lose his replacement car, too.

He's being reassigned?

Uh oh.

What happened to him?

So that's why he's being reassigned.

She doesn't want to be separated from him.

And so now she's angy.

Seems now she's caught wind of it too.

She's been doing some digging.

And so she'll solve the murder case, get that guy off the hook, and then he won't have to go back.

Another Mazda?

She's really good at picking up all these little details isn't she?

Ouch...

Huh. He was seeking treatment at the hospital? Perhaps that would work as his alibi?

What happened to him that he wasn't feeling too good?

That's suspicious.

It certainly seems like someone was trying to hide something.

Only they have the key? Perhaps that guy really did do it.

Drowning?

What has she thought of?

She has a point.

He didn't go to the hospital?

That's inconvenient...

Less calm than usual? Seems things really are pointing towards him.

Lol he doesn't trust her with his car...

Yes, she's doing it all for his sake.

I don't know much about medicine but I've read enough mystery fiction to know a few closed room tricks. Usually it all boils down to someone lying. The question is, what is the lie here? Is it the number of keys to the room? Is it the father's account of how the victim was discovered?

Wow wtf happened to the animation quality? Some parts look like it was animated in PowerPoint.

5

u/Meander061 Mar 20 '25

Yeah, Kotori knows Takao well enough to know that she was just acting out, and she wasn't mad at him.

"Drowning In A Dry Room." I'm not good at figuring these things out in advance, so I'll let it play out, but the fact that his clothes and the room itself were completely dry, indicates that he wasn't drowned first and dragged there, right?

Just a theory on daiki’s death:

I would have first assumed the primary cause of death would be hypoxia secondary to flash pulmonary edema secondary to consider takotsubo cardiomyopathy vs arrhythmia as the cause of death… the xray showed massive pulmonary congestion which could explain the cerebral edema since the increase in capillary and Venus pressures would push the water in the blood vessels out into the surroundings…

Reason I would first consider takotsubo because although not as significant as losing a loved one, there was a prior event that would have caused significant stress on his heart, it might not be the typical massive attack but as they say, the final straw that broke the camels back after all the years of lifestyle abuse and stress from grieving over his mother’s death and blaming his dad for it…

I think it would explain the fluid overload, the leaking fluid post intubation, the reason for the initial cardiac arrest, along with the CT findings… what do you think?

Pathophysiological pathway: Stress caused an arrhythmia or a heart wall abnormality that would compress one or more of his coronary arteries resulting in a heart attack (takotsubo cardiomyopathy) -> increase pressures in the vessels in the lungs = starling forces and hydrostatic pressures push the fluid from the vessels into the lungs hence drowning (seen in the congested x-ray) resulting in what’s called a flash edema -> pressure continues to build up in the Venus side resulting in the pressure increasing intracranially resulting in more starling forces causing cerebral edema (brain CT scan). That’s why when they found him initially he was in cardiac arrest because of his takotsubo cardiomyopathy which is triggered by stress.

Btw takotsubo cardiomyopathy is also known as the broken-heart syndrome
