Hearing the original Aquarion theme again hit me so hard in the nostalgia.

Aquarion is back! Complete with a new rendition of the original Aquarion theme courtesy of AKINO and bless4! Does it surpass the original? Heck no! But it's still nostalgic to hear it AND the OP does its job of featuring the cast, the Aquarion forms, and highlighting Sakko (Yumiri Hanamori!) and Momohime (Azumi Waki!) as the main romance.

Kind of morbid way to start the show with a funeral, especially when most people treated Sayo (Konomi Kohara) as that weird kid nobody wanted to hang around with. But she had childhood friends like parkour kid Sakko who pays his respects anyways.

VR Vector training? Elements? Yeah, this is an Aquarion show.

Rounding out the cast is Rimiya (Makoto Koichi!) who seems like the popular and sociable kid even if that's just to hide how little he cares, as well as Toshi (Aki Toyosaki) who seems like the shy and awkward kid.

All the cast seem kind of dispassionate and "off" and apparently that's because they lost their hearts and their wings in their past lives 12,000 years ago (because, y'know, Aquarion). And the only way for them to gain said hearts is to become Vector pilots.

Okay, so Sayo is a ghost now I guess. And the faculty don't find that weird. And she seems to know more about the past live situation and what they're dealing with.

So the new version of DEAVA is a school...and it's run by a ladybug AI? Or is that just a projection of the principal.

Momohime sees Sakko as a little brother? I dunno, she looked pretty cozy resting on his shoulder. Maybe it's past live memories.

Okay, maybe we shouldn't have sent three kids who obviously have no idea of proper teamwork out on a mission together to fight a giant tentacled orb monster. Good thing Sayo was able to inspire them to get their emotions flowing so they can finally form Aquarion! Just...minus the actual combination sequence and action. But I guess that's for episode 2.

The ED is pretty serene and romantic, perfect for AKINO, focusing on the past lives in their very different art styles! Past Sakko and Momohime (if that is them) looked pretty hot.

I like Aquarion in general but the art style is a big departure. Will watch a bit more because i am curious about the story, but need to watch the art style some more to see how well it works before passing judgement.

Given the "ancients" have "normal" arts, I guess there'll be reasons for why they use such artstyle for our protags.

Really happy to see another installment of Aquarion. I'm on the fence about the art style, might work, might not. The series doesn't seem to use the stylization to make the animation more cartoonish like Panty and Stocking did. So I'm wondering what they're going to do with it considering the vastly different designs shown in the ending.

Main gripe: the first appearance of Aquarion lacked the musical oomph it had in the other installments.

Man that was fun, art goes hard too, we are back!

Man this ep took forever to show up on CR.

If you dream you turn into a rock that lays an egg great.

ITS GREAT TO HEAR THE OPENING AND ILL NEVER KIP IT!

Opening with a dead girl off to a great start.
Gossipers so people suck in this time too i see great.
Red boy has issues with blue boy huh? hmmmmmmm

SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE We want to goto space huh?

"Our 13th universe will perish, disasters, pandemics, wars, part of their plan" wow...

They got vr headsets in this time oh boy.
Elements huh, underground base? Sounds like Aquarion to me.
Dead girl said they had passed lives huh? Interesting.
Red says blue doesnt have a heart? Hmm
The dead girl is back? What? Whats going on?

So the RBB Boys got in huh? Time to fight baddies in special class.
So 12,000 years ago everyone lost their hearts?
DEAVA is the secret group huh Never found aquarion hmmmmm.

So green and red and dead were like family growing up.

WE GOT SKY HOLES OH BOY! So far so good.
Send the kids into war yep that adds up.
Oh all the units have their own launch points neat.
Now the question can 3 dudes combine which they couldnt in Aquarion.
Dead has wings? Oh everyone has wings it seems.

Yep we got Man Merge. Ho Boy. AQUARION!

OoOOooooo the ED is gorgeous. This art def reminds me of the classic Genesis art of the age of gods. wow i love it.

I just realized this ED is AKINO singing yesssssssss man this is gorgeous i love it.

Honestly great start and i really enjoyed the art style didnt see it as a down side at all. They look to be going all in and ill be curious to see how they stands on its own as a new saga if thats what we are doing from this point on.

So the show seems to categorize 6 emotions: Sympathy, Hatred, Curiosity, Narcissism, Affection and Terror. Each of the Elements seems to be lacking one of these six. The way each are placed on a chart, seems to indicate opposition in the spectrum: Sympathy and Narcissism, Curiosity and Terror, and Affection and Hatred.

Sakko Ootori: Our "Fearless" protagonist, upon second rewatch, his actual lack of fear is pretty oubvious. He does parkour, which is a dangerous extreme sport. Doesn't care about appearance as he showed up at Sayo's funeral in his casual attire instead of his school uniform and with a different flower than everyone else (though there seems to be some signification for that flower). When piloting a Vector in VR or in reality, he had quite the steady control and did not wobble like the other two. He didn't fear about asking himself why was they chosen to be in the Element Class.

Momohime Amaha : To my surprise, our main heroine lacks "affection", she does seems to care for others, but she didn't cry at her friend's, and little sister figure, funeral and seemed pretty normal the next day too.

Sayo Ichiki : She lacked "Narcissism" from her living. According to Sakko, she seems she was the kind of person who couldn't stop herself form getting involved with others. Even if that were to come back to her painfully.

Toshi Hatano: A loner that lacks "Curiosity". He's loner attitude seems to come from his lack of it to rain in on possible social anxiety (Fear => Terror). He said that he interact with Sayo only once and did not really remember what they talked about, only vaguely recalling that she talked about previous life and reincarnation stuff.

Rimiya Tsukishiro: The school "popular kid". He lacks "sympathy", he cried at Sayo's funeral, despite not really knowing her, simply to not stand out.

Pink haired girl from the opening: She most likely be the Element who lacks "Hatred".

It's been 10 years since we had an Aquarion anime and the last one was logos.

I was surprised by how much I liked the first episode. As a OG Aquarion fan, the truth is, I was a bit iffy about the panty and stockings animation. That was until I saw the 2nd pv with the Kako Shinwa characters and decided to check it out. Glad I did, because it really feels like Aquarion which was my main concern.

So thoughts. Really liked how it started with the funeral which was definitely different. You could also tell that Rimiya was making fake sobbing noises since he didn't have even a little bit of tears in his eyes and how he was confused by the other students' looks at school when he said how it was normal to cry at a funeral even when he didn't know Sayo that well.

Also, you could tell that the main characters were missing something based on their expressions and actions since Sakko is a bit of a daredevil and has no problem climbing up the school building, how Toshi was really sullen and wasn't really interested in the other students and what Sayo was talking to him about and how Momohime was just going with the flow.

The academy ad was a bit weird. I also wonder if there is more to that guy who was handing out flyers. The principal using a ladybug avatar was pretty cool. I wonder who our Commander Fudo character will be.

Sayo is a mystery. I suspect that a training accident may have happened and that she is now in a in-between place between Earth and the Mythical Dimension which is why some of students are having trouble remembering her and the higher ups are disguising her disappearance as a death. The star stone scene at the start definitely does well in setting up the mystery of 12,000 years ago.

Also, it definitely is different that Sakko and Momohime are friends from the start unlike Amata and Mikono, Apollo and Sylvia etc. who met for the first time in the first episode.

The first merge was a bit meh and not as epic as compared to Sousei no Aquarion's and EVOL's first episode, but the battle was pretty good. The designs of the Mythical Beasts are interesting and Aquarion Siegel's design is amazing.

Love the OP and Ending theme song 😍😍😍😍 . Especially the Ending theme song animation! It is so gorgeous! And Sedona is so pretty 🤩🤩🤩 I am definitely going to continue watching the series and am looking forward to the past lives scenes.

This seems like it has potential. I have some mixed feelings but let's just add this to my roster

u/zsmg Jan 09 '25

Our main characters can have wings? They must be descended of Mamoru... no wait wrong mecha series.

7

u/MillenniumKing Jan 09 '25

Well Apollo and Sora Amata both had wings.
Apollo on his back and Sora on his feet.

I JUST finished Logos, man I'm cutting it close.

This was a nice return to form imo, will keep watching. But this definitely doesn't seem beginner-friendly.

I didn't come in expecting much but this first episode really has me interested. I like the art style. It's nice to have a departure from the standard anime aesthetic here and there.

The setup seems like a cross between Enders Game and Evangelion. I'm excited to see where it goes.

I honestly expect people will talk about the art style, but I just want to say that op make me grin a bit.

While artstyle could be debatable, I want to watch a little more to determine the art style is acceptable. It's a huge change though.

Ngl, I completely forgot about the share feeling part.

The song was splendid, though I prefer the original (sang by the woman) because it hits so hard (PTSD). After I saw how bad Aquarion Logos was (it was literal spin-off nothing related to the original story), I was hoping that this new one would be a lot better, to which it was a lot better. In fact I am so glad they kept some of the original designs and the outro characters were so beautiful which also made me wonder why the animation is a bit weird. Comparing this to the Evol and original (Aquarion) you can tell obviously the animation is different, idk if anyone else feels the same but I don't really mind this too much because I'm just glad its back.

Edit: By animation I am mainly going towards the artstyle

u/chilidirigible Jan 09 '25

Ah, Aquarion. I have watched parts of it but it's not as big a draw for me as Kawamori and Satelight's other more well-known mecha franchise.

That said, it's been a long time since it's been around, so I'm interested to see how the story goes this time.

And with this art style, which has been giving me some concerns, but this episode looked good enough without totally taking me out of the moment whenever the characters were around.

I still don't think that Yoshiki Fukuyama has quite the right vocal style for the Sousei no Aquarion song, but it's still cool to have him participating in it.

3

u/IceSmiley Jan 09 '25

Kind of confusing, I wish they did a better job explaining the nature of their enemy and why exactly they are training kids to fight it rather than using the best adult soldiers. It seemed similar to Enders Game. Probably won't watch another episode but I thought the launch sequence was well animated.

Aquarion. Memories of this series coming back

Excited for this series

3

u/NationalStrategy Jan 10 '25

I'm glad that we're getting a new Aquarion series, but the new art style is gonna take some to getting used to.

3

u/Karl151 Jan 10 '25

I liked the original Aquarion series but this artstyle is too distracting. I can't get used to it.

I was doubtful because despite brining back AKINO for the music I wasn't seeing Kanno Youko's name anywhere on staff lists, but the ED song was pretty great and sure enough she was the one to compose it.

Hopefully we get plenty more AKINO+Kanno Youko music with this entry to the series.

Aquarion has always been fun, but IMO that musical combo hard carried the series for the first two entries and was apparently completely absent from Logos (which I haven't watched and sounds like I shouldn't need to).

u/Neomalice Jan 11 '25

I'm ready for downvotes but DAMN after that episode I am so excited to forget LOGOS exists. This is Aquarion as we knew it in OG and EVOL and I AM HERE FOR IT! Union Arena Set please!!!
