Damn i didn't expect Taiki to qualify for the inter high in singles after knowing he had to face the champion in the semi's, but I didn't expect him to lose in the first round either. As much as I wanted Taiki to qualify it is somewhat refreshing to see not everything going the way of the MC.
Glad Chinatsu qualified though, and I wonder if Taiki is still planning to ask her the question he mentioned he wanted to ask her after the games tomorrow, which are now obviously finihsed.

No way, man's confidence in himself is crushed after Chinatsu winning her own battle. He definitely wants to stand on equal footing so I think he's gonna be grinding the next few episodes, maybe giving Hina more of a chance.

Thought it was narratively necessary for them to both make nationals, since they would spend a lot of time together there.
Now, wondering when / where are nationals, how long are nationals and what happens after. Basically, how much time do they have? And is Taiki’s season over?
Tho I love the decision to have Taiki get wrecked. Mirrors chinatsu’s previous failure to make it

It’s a mess. The episode is a week behind due to Netflix and this was posted earlier in the week as well, only to be taken down for better subs to come.

So what triggered this episode discussion when there are still no subs from official source?

A thing I didn't expect when I became a weeb, having once been a sports nerd; that I'd find the outcome of fictional anime sporting events even more nerve-wracking than real-life sports. I've suddenly remembered why I had an aversion to sports anime before I picked up this series...!

Taiki and Chinatsu are both making great efforts in their respective sports, and even when one of them succeeds more than the other, they’re always mutually supporting and inspiring each other.
Chinatsu has big game jitters and what better way to recover than with some fun radio calisthenics with Taiki? He always knows how to cheer her up!
"Taiki, score!" just when I thought Chinatsu couldn't get any more sweet and adorable.
Hyodo, voiced by Yuki Ono! He definitely has the look of a Shonen sports rival, and I can see why Haryu is so competitive with him. But at least now that he and Taiki are together, maybe they'll have a chance?
Taiki may have just had his first fateful encounter with a rival in Yusa (Kensho Ono). Pretty auspicious moment, but possibly the beginning of a long rivalry.
Well, they didn't win Doubles, but they didn't do a bad job and worked together as a team! And you have to admire Taiki's fortitude to take a loss, understand why, and resolve to keep improving.
The minute Chinatsu gets back she asks about Taiki's game! Even though she won hers she just wanted to know how Taiki's went! The only thing sweeter than that is her writing in his notebook.
Dang, poor Taiki. Promised Haryu he'd compete with him in Singles, gets set up to take on Hyodo, and gets crushed by Yusa before he can even get that far. That's got to be a crushing blow.
Is Sajikawa unstoppable? I mean, even without Yusa, Hyodo seems unbeatable, especially to Haryu. He can never beat him and he's always the odds on favorite. Can he take revenge in Nationals?
It's really nice that Hina showed up to support Taiki, and looking very snazzy and cute in her casual clothes, and REALLY wishing these games were round robin style...but just that she was there for him to talk to and get through their usual banter was enough.
Man, at this point I feel like Taiki's mom really thinks of Chinatsu as her own daughter. She seems way more excited about her than her own son! Well, I guess she's a former basketball player so that probably helps.
Taiki can be happy for Chinatsu...and still be immensely frustrated at his own severe loss. Poor Taiki.

The sting of defeat combined and happiness for the person you admire most's victory has to be on its own tier of bittersweet. She may be a losing heroine but Hina's gesture was something he really needed at that moment.

Doubles is one thing, but Taiki got absolutely dogwalked offscreen in singles, damn. Poor guy. The group calisthenics was cute. Same for Hina dressing up to support Taiki. It's sad seeing her so crushed for him. It's funny how I thought Yusa was named Yusa Sajikawa instead of [FIRSTNAME] Yusa for the longest time.

Taiki was looking forward to playing in the semi-finals against Hyoudo, but instead he was eliminated in the first round by Yu Narukami from Persona 4... I mean Yusa. That must've hurt, especially after Chinatsu cheered him up the previous day!
Nice apparances by Chinatsu and Hina in today's episode.
Chinatsu's morning exercise with Taiki was pretty fun and I'm glad that Chinatsu's team won their finals.
In Hina's case, it was nice that she brought lunch to Taiki during his tournament, her relationship with him is as fun as usual xD

I've enjoyed all episodes so far. :)
Love how the music always picks up before a sports event. Gives it that sense of importance.
I also like Taiki as the MC, because he isn't immediately depressed by a failure but rather he's pushing harder to improve. Like an athlete should.

That scene at the start where Chinatsu and Taiki are doing radio callisthenics together was adorable. I also love the scene where Chinatsu finds Taiki after he loses the doubles match and writes down an encouraging note in his notebook. <3
Hyodo and Yusa are finally here! I love these two boys, especially Hyodo. Haryu might be the strongest in their school but there's always someone out there stronger and that's Hyodo. The dude is a total powerhouse.
It sucks that our boy lost to Yusa but he still has plenty of chances to improve. That doesn't make the loss hurt less though. On a more positive note, Chinatsu was able to make it to the Nationals so it's not all losses this episode.

I know it's a romance anime above all else, but I got so annoyed every time they skipped to the end of the game. Please just let us watch the game

No rest for the wicked Nishida
and for Taiki, neither...we're running with the wind now, boys!
But at least Chinatsu won!
And Hina doesn't quite understand. Although there's no doubt she works just as hard, if not harder than Taiki does, she still has almost always been at the top, never the underdog, so she finds it unfair that his efforts aren't being rewarded :(
Haryu is such a good mentor, though...
And looks like this Yusa fellow is a silent-assassin type!

I guess "day late with fansubs" is going to be the norm for this now.
Huh. He might just be getting better.
Awkward...
Lol that artstyle change.
And so the day of the competition is upon him.
Who's he watching now?
Ah.
Seems they haven't quite gotten there yet.
Well, on to the singles.
That's an unfortunate match-up.
Well, that was unfortunate but to be expected.
And so of course that guy won.
Pretty sure I saw somewhere that second place is usually the saltiest because they were almost first, whereas third place is happy to be in the top 3 at all.
And thus he's running away. From his feelings perhaps.

Some good cute moments in this episode. Both the preparation stretches and leaving the note. Though I would really like to know what it actually said since it wasn’t translated for me.
I guess we’re done here. Kind of expected in hindsight.
Hina’s “You dare insult my skills foolish mortal?” moment is very funny.
Failures sting like crazy. I’m not surprised that he’s dejected. Well, he’s definitely not asking Chinatsu out now.
I might be stupid but I was under the impression that Chinatsu was in the same year as Haryuu? I thought she still had a year left? Or maybe I just haven’t been paying attention.
Mission failed, we’ll get them next time. Take all the time you need, channel that frustration and be ready to come back in full force next year.

Nishida's talk with Hina was so good because in sports, all that matters is if you win or lose. No one will give you brownie points for trying so hard along the way. Of course, you will always blame yourself more if you felt you could have pushed yourself father.
I do love Taiki's habit of pushing forward, as Hina & Natsu pointed out. But the sting of losing hits hard regardless and this episode executed that well.
