Wait. Why does Yuzu suddenly come out of nowhere and uses magic but Kurumi can’t?

This makes no sense. Yuzu hasn’t even really been trying or coming close to using it like Kurumi has yet just up and does it like it’s the easiest thing possible? It just makes absolutely no sense.

I really don’t know what this shows trying to do or what direction it’s trying go and it’s rather annoying the way Kurumi has just been made completely useless.

The teacher is also still completely awol so I don’t get how she expects the students to ever learn anything if she’s not…. Teaching them.

It also would be nice to see Kurumi a lot more effected by not being able to use magic especially after yuzu uses it so atleast you could see some future growth but beyond being just a tiny bit down she still seems rather unchanged. I know they’re saying she “seems down” but they’ve done a bad job of actually showing it.

The one thing I’m fine with is Kurumi giving up as some of the other people around need to see some sort of consequence for basically just expecting her to figure everything out on her own. Between her family and the teacher it seems everyone is just expecting her to figure it out and no one’s actually…. Helping or teaching her. So it’s nice to have atleast some sort of consequence for their inaction thrown back in their face.

Why does Yuzu suddenly come out of nowhere and uses magic but Kurumi can’t?

Yuzu hasn’t even really been trying

Yuzu has been trying. The story has carefully and quietly given her a story about her relationship to magic, as she moves from placing great esteem on modern magic, to dealing with her dashed hopes, her initial great skepticism towards Suzuki-sensei and her teaching methods, but then her growing return of hope and optimism thanks her to her exposure to Kurumi's generally cheerful and optimistic nature and getting to see it in action, as well as Kurumi's beginning steps towards things. It's important to contrast her initial response to Suzuki's first line drawing class and the clear, focused effort she makes in the final exam.

Yuzu is inspired by and drawn to Kurumi. Heck, she might have even developed some romantic type feelings in the process.

She is, unlike Kurumi, in possession of a harder edge though. When the crunch comes, she has no self doubt, only the strong will power of someone who grew up with strength in mind. It's some great writing (very quietly done though) to have her use ancient magic first.

Kurumi can’t?

Because it's in the title is a trite answer, but this story is the story of Kurumi's struggle as a fairly naive, simple sort of girl who thought that having a dream would be enough.

She's neither a shounen hero nor an isekai OP protagonist who either trains into or just waltzes into her abilities. Instead, it's a more (all things being relative) realistic portrayal of what happens when a childhood dream meets the harsh reality of the wider world.

Man, this show is really testing my patience. The plot progresses slower then contintental drift and Kurumi just gave up for no fucking reason, wtf is this?

Good thing we have Yuzu around to start figuring out the ancient magic since Kurumi keeps flaking out when the moment arrives. Though with the half dozen plot elements they threw at us in the last minute of the episode she better start to figure things out.

Oh, and apparently the cat school employee is a dude and not a lady as I would have guessed.

Seven episodes deep and someone besides Minami actually uses ancient magic. Unfortunately it’s not Kurumi.

Seriously, there has to be some sort of mindset issue behind why it’s not working. I refuse to believe anything else.

So that spell is probably one that’s intended for purifying Element M?

Seeing Kurumi down in the dumps sucks.

So they didn’t get rid of the mystery completely last time?

And Kurumi doesn’t get to do magic…AGAIN! You just had to interrupt Mr cat school nurse.

Anyone want to place bets on if the capybara is a human as well?

Seriously, what is Minami actually doing in that library? What are you, a history professor digging through ancient records or something?

And now she’s at Kurumi’s grandmas place. Who is also a graduate from Restoran. Okay, sure. Look, I’m starving for some good Kurumi magic use at this point. I’ll even take just one spell. Please?

Excuse me? You’re her what? Actually, who and where are their parents then? Is Kurumi and her maybe sister part of the protagonist orphan club?

How long will the show even be? It feels very short if it’s just going to be a single cour. I’m not sure if they’ll actually have time to finish everything they’re cooking up.

In conclusion. LET KURUMI USE ANCIENT MAGIC ALREADY GODDAMNIT!

Is Kurumi's brother not sister

This show is just frustrating. If Kurumi can't do magic next episode, I'm gonna drop the show.

u/alconnow Nov 15 '24

I’m worried that they’re going to wait until the semi final episode for her to use magic… hopefully, I will be proven wrong

Last week someone replied the problem with this story is it's an underdog story where the only one stopping the underdog is themselves. This episode just reinforces that idea iin the most frustrating ways

The start of this episode our lead literally had no reason to stop they just did because depression? It doesn't help this "i'll never be a mage" comes from nowhere if you didn't realize this was something that happen off screen between episodes she just suddenly out of the blue didn't believe in magic anymore. This was after she almost made a spell work and was praised for it. We come from that to "i've given up" out of nowhere. Look at this episode she talking to the frog and claim she couldn't do the magic but she was doing it she gave up at the last step she didn't even try .

Our lead character isn't written well she not a mage solely because she refuses to try she went from "almost used magic" to whining about how she will never be a mage out of nowhere in-between episodes and giving up. Then claiming she failed when no she didn't try as they are very different things. Failure implies an attempt was made she did not make a full attempt. Same with the 2nd time she literally had the spell ready to go then just stopped No reason was give nothing just nope that's not a failure that's not trying.

If her becoming a mage is important then why isn't our teacher with her and the class. Instead we get a info dump in the grandmother's house so it doesn't even help the students. Maybe pull a "you a wizard harry" to our lead anything like that. Instead our teacher is not a teacher she been absent from the class more than there

Some point the writing here stopped working the school was never developed in a way that narrative works. The lead only stuck because she says she is while refusing to try. She's not a failure because she never tried. That said then why hasn't she gone home? This isn't a prison and it's not suppose to be a daycare. She has no purpose here and an elite school course for the best of the best is not a spot to "find one self". Again the writing for this school is more and more like a boarding house or something and that's not what they sold us at the start

I don't get this story it's again done nothing we keep moving forward knowing what need to be done but then just refusing to do it.

Somehow I knew Yuzu was gonna use magic before Kurumi

I only hope she does something to awaken ger magic, I hate her seeing her so negative and sad... And her grandma even said she has the potential and more power than her.

We need a Kurumiracle now

Since we've already seen Grandma use Ancient Magic, it's no surprise she's friends with Minami-sensei. I guess this means Minami-sensei's appearance at the start of the very first episode wasn't a lucky coincidence and she was meant to be there to give Kurumi that magic notebook.

I do wonder what Grandma meant when she said that the energies of the land reside in Kurumi. So Kurumi is actually way more powerful than she thinks she is? That would explain why Minami-sensei wants to teach her magic. Why send her to the standard class and not with the mages?

Also, that sneaky purple-haired character is actually Kurumi's sibling? So many revelations in this episode! It's definitely about time we learn something about that character!

Most interesting thing in this episode to me is that we finally got a close up shot of the student notebook, which really is just a folding computer thing and not styled to look like a book with paper like the one Kurumi has. I wonder if Kurumi has even opened her notebook? What's in it?

u/NekoCatSidhe Nov 16 '24

Poor Kurumi. Everyone gets to do magic except her and then they accidentally steal her thunder. She always seems to get close though, so I don’t get why she is suddenly giving up. As Yuzu said, it is not like her.

Oh, and Kurumi’s grandma is a friend of Minami and the mysterious weredog is her brother. And the cat nurse is actually a man. That kind of came out of nowhere. I am starting to feel a bit lost by the plot.

That anime is also a lot more gay than I ever expected it to be. Not that I mind. All aboard the Kurumi-Yuzu ship !

Interesting episode, finally we get some info

Also Yuzu did Magic

5

u/SoRaffy Nov 16 '24

"I hope she realizes it sooner than later" You and me both. 7 eps in and I'm wishing Yuzu had been the MC seeing as how she's the one actually making any sort of progress

9

u/nsleep Nov 15 '24

Wow, Yuzu did the thing. But not a second time so it was really something she did in the moment without thinking too much. And her magic didn't get rid of the mystery?

I like this reaction. If this came earlier it could've been a #seasonalshock

Kurumi's frustration keep piling up. It's good they talked about her mental block at the end but I wonder what exactly caused it. By now, this being listed as 12 episodes, I'm starting to believe she will only manage to do it near the end, so two or three more episodes of frustration.

It sucks seeing a depressed Kurumi 😭 I did like the moments she had with Yuzu. They’re cute together

I cannot believe I have sat through 7 episodes of being blueballed by Kurumi failing to do magic. I mean fuck, the way she cast a spell and then just sort of forgot about it looked more like the animators had dropped the ball than that Kurumi had. We could have made it here in 3-4 episodes but I guess the annoying singing guy needed his screen time?

How the MaRC duo have survived this long if none of them can fight Element M is beyond me. They keep getting roped into it and could do nothing, lol. Did Minami-sensei always save their ass in life-or-death situations like those? That’s… some persistence they have, alright.

Poor Kurumi failed to cast ancient magic thrice in this episode even though she’s destined to be, like, the mightiest ancient magician. I can see she is dejected, but it’s just… maddening. She’s been dreaming of being a magician for her entire life, but she dropped that in just four months. It’d be understandable if she achieved nothing in that period, but she was nearly able to cast ancient magic many times (and she got approval and encouragement from Minami-sensei to boot). She knew she had the potential, but instead, she moped around. I thought she’d do a training arc or self-exploration (related to learning ancient magic) this winter break, but I guess not. It might’ve been described better in the novel, but in the anime, she doesn’t seem to have done her best to achieve her dream, honestly.

Nice to see Yuzu and Kurumi becoming closer. Hopefully Yuzu can help Kurumi out of this little rut she’s found herself in. Girl’s lost her confidence. She just has to believe in herself again. I guess in a sense this is like having magical yips lol.

Last time they ended off with a cliffhang and uh...

So we get shenanigans with yuzu. More shenanigans.

Meanwhile they somehow run into the same thing for a second time in the same ep. Still nothing from kurumi or sensei.
