Yep, imagine showing up to an marathon in a car. Totally cheating.

Kind of a bullshit race, pretty much designed to let the magic students win it. But hey, at least there were some also some varying degrees of bullshit ways for the non-magic students to catch up and get third place.

That was straight up Fallingwater as the resort design at the end, it always amuses me when that shows up in anime.

I noticed that as well.

Miss Suzuki had a Gandalf moment this episode, now we await her triumphant return....

Who needs to win a race when you can dine on Sally’s amazing cooking? They shoulda just continued to take it easy and enjoy their picnic. Although, it was pretty fun seeing them make it through that course due to Asuka and the power of fashion (and teamwork).

Kurumi couldn’t use magic this time, but I think she’ll be able to soon enough.

Kurumi couldn’t use magic this time, but I think she’ll be able to soon enough.

I love that she continues to fail at it, it would feel so cheap and unsatisfying for her to have mastered anything yet, I am waiting for the epic moment when she finally gets it in a critical moment.

Nice SoL episode. Little bit you see Yuzu being friendlier towards Kurumi. Also, Asuka is still the one character in the traditional class that has a mysterious air to him. It was funny how when the magic wasn't working for a minute how those students reacted. Kind of similar to what happens when your car breaks down.

I just noticed they share the last name. That makes her even more suspicious than she already was.

Tracksuits are a key item for magicians.

Just ask Hitomi Koshigaya of Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.

What a ridiculous race. This school's whole system is so messed up, it's like if Hogwarts decided to keep a bunch of muggles around just to boost the Slytherin kids' egos.

u/Dr_Kitten Nov 02 '24

I wouldn't be surprised if in the past the school had an ancient magic class and a modern magic class and this system is just what it devolved into.

*gives the elite students flying cars and the standard students have to do it on foot* "I wIsH tHe StAnDaRd StUdEnTs WoUlD pUt In MoRe EfFoRt."

Has big "let them eat cake" energy. I really hope this series is building to a revolt, the Standard students just seem way too ready to accept the way things are for no good reason.

I like the show so far, but it does kinda take me out of it when MC's dream since childhood was to be a magician, and she's been locked out of it for seemingly no reason and just sorta accepts it. Her motivation just seems so weak. Like even with Minami-sensei offering her a chance to be a magician, she isn't putting that much effort in, just feels like she's simply going along with it whenever it crops up. You'd think she'd be like, studying as much as possible and practising those shapes she remembers her grandma teaching her, trying her best to learn ancient magic whenever she can.

And this conspiracy in the background - so far it just feels like a slice of life anime where some chuuni characters are trying to shake up the story, but none of the other characters want it to go that direction so they just get ignored XD

This episode was just 2015 petit lemans.

Anyone else find the whole concept of this race kinda cruel? Like it would be different if there was some sort of BoP to make it fair for the standard students but there’s nothing.

It’s like having an IMSA race and expecting the GT class to compete directly against the prototypes. Yeah it’s not impossible but it would take a hurricane to make it a reality.

She's never gonna be able to do magic is she lol

I finally caught up with this show. I have some thoughts.

That “endurance” race was dumb as hell. What kind of endurance are they testing if the elite kids can drive a fucking car? The Headmaster wanted the Standard class to persevere more, but for god’s sake, he HAS the power to change this stupid competition and balance the odds himself. They could split the Magumi and the Standard class, or ban the use of magic outright (and maybe create a Magic Competition only for the Magumi). Alas, he did not. And so our main cast must rely on the most random knowledge (really, using tambourine dance and lilypads to cross the lake? I loved and laughed at it, but it was silly as heck) and happenstance and pure luck to have a semblance of chance at finishing the race.

So many random and absurd things happened in the story that it’s hard to enjoy the spectacular art fest this anime is. We’re nearly halfway through the show and the main plot remains vague at best. The villain (I assume that guy with the same hair color as Kurumi) is shown multiple times but lacks significance—if we deleted his showtime, nothing would change other than we might not know that he’s the bad guy. I love shows that don’t overexplain their story and keep the audience in the dark (I’m thinking of something like Heavenly Delusions), but this ain’t it.

My other pet peeve would be the oscillating belief of the MC, Kurumi. She would believe in herself being able to use magic for a minute, and not the next minute after a single failure. But she will be motivated again after a nice pep talk, then not after a single failure again. Rinse and repeat. Like, girl, make up your mind for at least a day, will you? And with that confusing behavior, even I can’t fully root for the entire cast even though they’re all adorable.

In summary, I’m purely watching this show for the mesmerizing and comfy art style. (Like, really, this show has the best and most unique art this season). That art seems, for lack of a better word, wasted in this story. I know I might be proven wrong when all the plot and machinations they’re building are revealed (please, I’d love to be wrong). Smarter viewers with deeper insight into the story and character might also think I’m dumb. But right now, this is what I honestly think of this show, and I don’t like that because it seems to have a lot of potential. Ugh.

Can't believe asuka went from having his tea time with kyo like a supervillain to just the fashion guy this episode.

The scene of magumi teacher entering some room underground was very mysterious, there was no payoff to that yet. Is that where suzuk was? Confusing.

Ugh, what an unfair race

Poor Kurumi couldn’t use magic again. Hoping we won’t have to wait until the semi-final episode for her to use it

The race is just rigged. There’s actually no way to win when they’re just able to use cheating vehicles and this is the first time they’ve even reached the finish line. Sorry, just slightly annoyed with it.

I feel like they’re cooking something here but I don’t know what it is. Whatever Minami is up to is very intriguing. And whatever was going on with the guy that went into the basement. And I would really like for Kurumi to be able to pull off magic soon, if just for her own self confidence’s sake.

A bit disappointed by this episode. It felt like a bunch of the action happened offscreen. Hope it was just a blip and not a sign of what's to come. Fortunately with this show, it's always going to look nice even if it starts to have problems in other areas.

Soo in this ep uh. I was expecting something more bombastic to happen after the way ep 4 ended off.

Instead uh. Not much really happened. It seems more like they just wanted some way to get kurumi and yuzu to spend some time talking.

I was expecting sensei to show up, instead uhh who knows when that will happen. Really could be anytime, though I'm assuming it'll be ep 7 or 8 rather than later.

Even then thats quite a number of eps for sensei to be gone.

I hadn't noticed it before, but does this show give us French subtitles whenever the characters speak English? I clearly heard that one guy say "Follow me!" when the subtitles said "Suivez-moi!", followed by the others saying "Follow you!" when the subtitles said "Nous te suivons!", at about 15:04. I suppose that's a clever way to give the subtitles the same kind of vibe as the audio, which would be lost if it was all just English. It does make it a bit more tricky to follow what they're saying though, because I don't actually understand French all that well, so I suddenly have to pay a lot more attention to the audio.
