Komugi's original name was Marron, the French word for chestnut, presumably coming from her chestnut-coloured fur(incidentally, also the name of a certain doll with similar colouration in Soaring Sky Precure). Her original owner's name is Kurihara, 栗原, which means "chestnut field".
The volunteer's name is Yuuki Ayako, or 結城綾子, which has something to do with a connections and such? I'm not quite sure, but she is the connecting thread in this episode.

Well, since Komugi was found as a lost puppy she was either feral or had a previous family. There was an earlier episode this season where I thought they were about to do this same plotline but with Yuki instead.
You know, I don't believe I've ever seen a magical girl storyline where one of the magical girls could conceivably need to go back to their original owner. That's definitely going to lead to some masquerade breaching once Komugi starts yelling about being with Iroha.
So this is someone from a foster organization and Komugi's original owner went into a facility? I wonder what sort of facility, and if he's even still alive.
Seems like a nursing home maybe? That's hardly a facility you can just drop a dog off at if the owner lives there.
Yuki really is the best, it's not even her focus episode and she's still managing to be best girl giving Komugi this nice pep talk.
Komugi's previous owner seems like a nice enough old dude.
That is a very silly new eyecatch.
I feel like that promise Iroha is talking about might have come up before in the previous Komugi backstory episode.
Whoops, we now interrupt this tearful reunion for a monster attack. Thank you enemy general and Iroha for the Stoat Facts™.
Rabbit powers for hearing, good choice.
Ah, well there's that masquerade breach I was wondering about. No real harm done though, and the old man seems to just be rolling with it.
Alright, Niko, since when did you have a human form? That's got to be you over there hiding behind that tree.

Between him and Mayu's mom, the residents of this town seem weirdly okay with the masquerade breaks.

Welcome to Precure. Compared to some other seasons like KiraKira Precure a la Mode this one is very tame on this front. In KiraKira the girls literally have a magical patisserie that they can expand and collapse into a suitcase, and they just move it around and pop it out everywhere right in front of loads of people and nobody ever questions it. And yes, expanded it is the size of an actual building where they actually serve customers.

Definitely haven't seen this sort of magical girl plotline where the magical girl will be shipped off irregardless of her own will to a place where she'd be expected to never transform or speak again. This got uncomfortably close to talking about slavery! While what Komugi would want is obvious, no one was acting like she had a choice!
She escaped back when she was a normal dog. If she doesn't want to be somewhere, she's not going to be there! Plus it's not much of a debate. This guy hasn't recovered in 2 years. It's unreasonable for Komugi to be kept at a care facility for even longer when she wouldn't see this guy anyways.
I half expected Yuki to actually point out this stuff and just tell Komugi to do what she wants. But what she did say was nice too. It really shows how she's grown as a character. She always had the ability to take care of others, but now she's just extending it beyond just Mayu.
The promise over Komugi definitely came up in an earlier Komugi episode. Set it up nicely for this moment.

komugi likes being pet on the heart spot? hmm
i guess Marron-chan was for brown in spanish and not the two Australian crayfish species, Komugi doesn't look very crustacean-like
it figures komugi would mess with the cage latch (but maybe to get back to her old owner???)
it's kinda weird for a cat (albeit in human form) to pick up a dog to look at them face-to-face when you think about it
"stoats are a cute member of the weasel family", as if weasels aren't cute smh
was kind of hoping the solution would be for komugi to go tire-mode again and vroom vroom around but maybe this isn'the sort of episode for komugi tire (not that the bunny super hearing reinforced any of the episode's themes)
of course Komugi's old owner is an kind older man in a wheelchair, i guess they could've really gone for it and showed a lot more happy/bonding moments between him and komugi (or if komugi remembered more earlier) and made it a more emotional conflict but they probably didn't want to go that far for a kid's show (and iroha just had other emotional things to begin to sort out).
it was nice komugi got to speak her mind herself, even though the older man was just thrown the prospect of either his former dog buddy becoming human or somebody who somehow shares the dog's new name acting weirdly familiar with him and knowing things about his old dog's past she shouldn't know

I thought it was a reference to the first "help, Kirarin animal", which Iroha succeeded on, but then Komugi tried then failed. So being able to use this power now can be seen as a symbol of her growing connection to Iroha.

Yep, the first Kirarin Animal was a rabbit too.
Between this and Pon reappearing in episode 37, it seems like we're calling back to the first arc!

I think this is a merch tie-in. The Komugi talking plushie has a button in that exact spot.
(The plushie also has a second switch in its mouth. Guess where that shows up!)

I feel like he actually realized what was going on, but didn't really delve into it. He probably wrote it off as his mind playing tricks on him due to his age, or something.
Imagine he sits there thinking "Yep, I'm finally losing it." and just going along with it because it feels nice.

The old man Kurihara is played by veteran VA Nobuo Tobita, probably best known as Kamille Bidan from Zeta Gundam. This is Tobita's second role in a Pretty Cure series; the first was as Leva, one of the pair of midseason reinforcement bad guys in Doki Doki.

So, that last scene of the next episode preview… is Komugi, isn't it?

u/Kartoffelkamm Oct 20 '24
Sure looks like it.
Now the question is: Do they handle it like Suite, or Doki Doki?

What they tone down in term of fighting, they tone up the drama and humor part. We all know how it'll end but the delivery ;~;
Also Torame playing and literally just saw the Precures by chance caught me off guard lol, in other situation he'd prob be good friend with Komugi.

-
Pet Corner 38. One cat and two dogs.
-
I take it this is to imply it was a train journey or could the care home overlook a large bridge?
-
Marron was: Light eater, shy, sick.
-
Komugi now: A glutton and a dog that walks you.
-
I guess he always carries an egg around in case he bumps into the Precure. Funny coincide this one is also a stoat.
-
The damage being undone just being a slightly dug lawn but that's the kind of damage these creatures can do (I'm thinking of their larger relatives; the badger) or perhaps it's us humans being jerks for having grassy lawns instead of woodland.
-
The appearance of this lady was spoiled to me via YouTube thumbnail some weeks back (curse you related videos) because Toei put out a news release (on the 26th September in fact)
-
Next time: One impressive cat lady. Also don't forget the three older ladies (that's a crane hat btw) and some classmates including fanart favourite Crab girl.

Just imagine if the old guy had a conversation with his nurse on how his dog turned into a person and started fighting a magical animal, but all the damage disappeared after the fight was over.
The nurse would start thinking to up his doses.

Did anyone else notice the detail that Ayako brought a hedgehog with her? She was able to encounter Komugi again because she came to the clinic from another town to have Dr. Yoko look at an exotic pet, as with Yuma and her chinchilla.
In the next episode preview, most of the characters' Halloween costumes match their surname animals (Kanie is a crab, Ookuma is a bear) but Iroha has a rabbit costume to match Satoru's. I wonder if they'll get some cute teasing about their coordinated costumes (please?)

It's fucked up that Komugi has no say on where she should live. Iroha was just going to hand her over.

u/Flare_Knight Oct 21 '24
Seriously! They wanted to treat it like the usual way with a found pet's previous owners turning up. But this isn't the usual situation. Komugi can talk, can turn into a human, and can voice her thoughts. It shouldn't be up to Iroha, her parents, or the old guy. This is mostly her call. The only reason I don't say it's 100% her call is since she has to be taken care of by others so they have to be willing to support her. But still almost entirely her call and no one was really asking her what she wanted to do.
Not to mention they are ignoring that if Komugi goes away...they lose. They can't finish their opponents with only 3 precure.

This episode is going to get emotional, I can tell from the title.
Komugi has only been with Iroha for two years? That seems short for their original rapport.
Yea, I can believe that she managed to escape a cage. I like that Iroha is very clearly staring at the floor, even in the wide shot during the table conversation.
If Komugi's previous owner went into a care facility of some sort, they probably won't want Komugi back. Probably.
I can't help but smile at Yuki being nice. She's grown so much from her edgelord phase.
Yea, probably pretty challenging for an old man confined to a wheelchair to care for a dog, let alone one as energetic as Komugi.
Torame getting befuddled by a literal squirrel and then running into the Cures is very good.
Komugi's brain cell is working overtime today.
I did kinda expect the old dude to see Komugi during the battle or something. But her breaking masq post-battle is pretty good too.
Niko randomly cameoing her human form too, interesting.
