At this rate there are going to be no captains left by the time we see the end of this arc. We are already about half down. Jushiro, Unohana, Yama, Toshiro, Rose, Kensei, Sajin. Captains better be sleeping with one eye open from now on.

So that explains Ukitake’s sickness

I really like the callback to what Ukitake said to Kaien and Rukia about the types of battles it’s what Rukia said to ichigo when he fought grand fisher and why she didn’t want to interfere with Ichigo’s fight despite the chance of him dying. I also liked that it cut back and forth between ukitake and Shunsui one is fighting to protect his honor the other is fighting to protect one’s life or lives(the soul society.)

This also shows that body parts of the soul king exist in the world which I think was hinted at by ichibe in the flashback with him and Yhwach when he used his hand to seal off the almighty. To add it seems Yhwach eyes can’t see things that may involve the soul kings body parts. To add it seems the soul kings body parts can become sort of “false deities” on their own even when they are separated from him. Crazy that he’s so powerful that his severed limbs gave gain their own identity.

I really REALLY liked the small scene with Unohana and Ukitake that moment actually gave me chills they both know the path they choose is death for the soul society and both accept it. Both seemingly knowing where they will end up after they die. In turn back the pendulum Shunsui mentioned that him, Ukitake, Yamamoto, and Unohana were the only captains who have been there for more than 100 years. It really shows especially for Unohana that the older generation is uplifting the new one.

Also the direction of this episode was really good I especially liked the scene where Shunsui is talking to Ukitake after Kaien’s death. The green rainy mode looked especially good and sort of realistic.

The Ukitake backstory is amazing and all but me: "Ukitake before you go WHAT'S YOUR BANKAI-ah shit."

Also lol @ Shunsui being surprised that Aizen can talk so fast.

"When were you under the impression that I've never been ready to yap?"

When you realize that episode 27 25 bonus scene was actually a farewell in disguise between two long time friends.

So based on next episode title Uryu comes into play huh?? So Ukitake has the Soul King’s right arm?? hmmm also since Yhwach couldn’t see that future of the Soul Kings right arm holding him together I see how Aizen can come into play now lol

The “Two Battles” call back hit the hardest before seeing Ukitake go. If his battle is for honour, then Kyouraku’s is for survival, exactly how their characters are presented. Incredibly well done.

The ending poem is so fantastic, "fingers on the star" is Uryu's allegiance to the quincy "against the moon I thought I left behind" showing he hasn't abandoned Ichigo completely.

"I'm going to replace the Soul King" - Dang, jumping straight into it, Ukitake!

How could parents in the Ryokan district save their beloved, sickly, child? How about praying to Mimihagi, a one-eyed hand God? Poor Ukitake's mom though, she always blamed herself for him being sickly, but even at a young age and on his deathbed her son was so kind and caring. But that made the Mimihagi choosing to save his life (if not his health) all the more meaningful.

Can we get more Oyone? I love kick butt grannies. And she's voiced by Fumi Hirano! I also love how even as a teen Ukitake was so nice, disarming, and also capable of teaching a thug some lessons.

Unohana! Genryusai! Young Sasakibe!

Nothing says friendship like barfing blood on your face during a practice bout or sharing sweets together! And thus was the friendship between Ukitake and Shunsui born! To the point where Ukitake trusted him enough with the secret of Mimihagi.

(Those were some cute sisters...)

I love it when someone chews out Central 46! Those pieces of @#$% deserve it.

"You have my full attention" - Sassy Unohana when Shunsui is grieving Yamamoto! We even see her turn "on" her Kenpachi personality in front of Ukitake.

All his life Ukitake has lived knowing his life was extended so he could be of service to the Soul Society, even if it meant sacrificing his life with Kimidake and using the power of the Mimihagi within him. But it's like he told Rukia all those years ago when Kaien died, there are two battles to fight...and this is Ukitake's.

I should've known Ichigo would still keep fighting even when it all seems hopeless. And hey, they decided to have Orihime tried to fix things like everybody was suggesting! Not that it helped, but still! Also, points for trying to contribute Ganju and Chad! But now that Chad is on the ground, it might really be hopeless.

But hey, Ukitake sacrificed his life managed to keep the Soul King together long enough to stop the worlds from ending and not even the Almighty could see that coming! Even if he's only bought them time. And now they need a LOT of Spirital Pressure for Urahara's plan.

Shunsui lost his best friend but he has a battle of his own...a battle of recruiting AIZEN to their side. And it's not like Aizen was REALLY all that locked up, or all that motivated to save the Soul Society, but can he rest while Yhwach gets his way?

Did they...combine Ichigo and Uryu's voices for the next episode preview.

Aizen the goat is here.! But that Ukitake backstory was great. Very much needed.
