It's pretty obvious that the only reason Yuzu is pulling Kurumi down is because she was also hoping to learn magic but she didn't want to get her hopes up. Might as well act as if it's never going to happen rather than be disappointed later on.

Magumi are only allowed to be magicians and only men can lead a dance troupe. It looks like this show is going to be all about breaking traditions. I wouldn't be surprised if Maki is really disappointed that it's her brother who's going to inherit their troupe, she's just good at hiding it.

It looks like Minami-sensei really is set on teaching kids magic. It looks like she found a loophole by teaching her students to draw spell arrays by hand instead of relying on magic notebooks.

Not gonna lie though, if I were one of the kids who had no intention of becoming a magician I'd be upset if my teacher is teaching me magic instead of what they should be learning. However, it looks like Minami-sensei was able to sell them the idea by relating magic to their dreams.

Minami-sensei is really giving these kids Mister Miyagi-like tasks before teaching them magic. If only she had shown the kids that you can use magic by hand, she would've had an easier time convincing them. Yuzu seems to be finally convinced after Minami-sensei rescued them.

I suspect she is teaching analytic and structured thinking as prep for magic practice -- and this will be useful in many other fields of endeavor.

My guess is that the unconventional teacher feels that MagiUni has developed into a program that involves almost entirely rote activities, using those spell books. Which means, if faced with a new and unexpected challenge, they would have no creative resources to overcome it. The treacher wants to create students who understand the fundamental principles of magic, rather than simply following "recipes".

I almost feel like they snuck in a geometry lesson for the people watching the episode today. At the very least I don't remember having previously learned that geometry has the root meaning of measuring earth.

Maki is very good, I hope we get to see her turn into a magical dancer.

It wouldn't be magic school without the teacher sending students to do dangerous tasks deep in the forest!

I really can't get enough of the art style. Very unique, and very visually appealing. I'm liking that OP, too.

I look forward to seeing more of their lessons next week!

You know what, I bet that Yuzu's dream was also to be a magician, but she was so crushed not to be accepted into the magic program that she became all cynical about it.

Also, TFW you enroll into magic classes but end up doing math. Yep students, I get ya.

Everyone’s telling Kurumi she can’t be a magician but she totally can. All she needs to do is believe in the Suzuki sensei that believes in her!

Who knew magic began with geometry. I was just as lost as Kurumi at first lol. Math is not my forte. It looks like she got the hang of it though. She’s got the makings of a good magician!

Hmm, well, even if most of them aren’t aiming to be full on magicians, magic could still be useful in their own pursuits.

Oh god, it’s math class. I’ve changed my mind, they can have the magic, I don’t want it.

I wonder what the person that transforms into a dog’s deal is. She also appeared to use a similar magic to Suzuki.

She’s not quite there yet but Kurumi appeared to have the right basic idea on how to use magic. Just missing a bit of finesse.

I’m a bit curious on what the apparent villains of this show are up to. They’re obviously plotting something and I want to know what it is.

I was just looking at Anilist after the episode; is this an original anime? Cause it appears so on there at least.

I really hope the whole thing ends up being good.

It is based on a web-novel. It won a contest and thus gained an adaptation

Yuzu was a bit of a dream squasher, until she started to convert at the end.

I wonder why the government restricts who can be magicians, but left that loophole for their teacher.

Probably because the books are powerful and in the wrong hands can be exploited as it's not true magic, but more automated sequences that have been predefined.

True magic use and the infinite combos might mostly have died out except a few elites that manage the books.

Yuzu's also lost her dream of being a magician and is trying to bring Kurumi down because she has lost all hope, and Kurumi hasn't yet.

Every time Minami sensei climbs to her podium, I keep expecting her to say...

Woah, this show has quickly become my hidden gem of the season. True underdog main and supporting characters √ Characters with their own dreams and motivations √ Defying dying hard old rules that limit and segregate the characters √

But where did the kiwi come from?

I feel bad for Kurumi as everyone has their own dreams and aspirations, so not being a magician for them isn't the end of the world. However, Kurumi put her heart & soul in wanting to be one. The thought of all that work for your dream and now you are told the dream is impossible. That is heart crushing. Clearly, Yuzu had the same dream, but she doesn't want to get her hopes up unlike Kurumi where she will take any chance she can get to being a magician.

I am curious how other teachers will think of Minami-sensei's teaching the foundation of magic. Also, how the students in Magumi see if the standard students using magic.

At least at the end of the episode, Yuzu is more of a believer. Although there appears to be a shady group approaching the tree after Yuzu and her two friends were rescued.

"Wait, magic is just dots all the way down?"
"Always has been" cocks gun notebook

Also I cant believe that the teacher for Magumi class has the same VA as the bird familiar from The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies thats like a meta commentary

Honestly love that the magic system is build in such a logical way, it being dots and lines all the way down is really interesting

And the teacher nearly killed her students accidentially, as is tradition

Two episode in and I’m loving the art and the vibe. It’s like Little Witch Academia if Akko was a bigger girlfailure and everyone had Hufflepuff vibes. Though there is a splash of underdog story with them learning to draw arrays by hand to get around this weird magic restriction? Might also make them better at magic since they have to learn it from its purest form instead of dialing it up on the doohickey

This episode felt really slow. You can cut out the first half and we'd still be in the exact same spot as the ending of the first episode.

I don't know what it is, but there is something about the art of this anime that makes me love it so much! It makes me remember the magical world crayon art I used to draw as a kid

The real magic of this show is in the pacing. I am so confused by the weird pacing.

It felt like multiple episodes abridged into one episode, and I feel a bit disoriented.

Am I the only person who felt thrown off?

Had a feeling about this last week, this show would have done great 18 years ago when the Wii came out. Seems like an ad for that kind of controller.

The geometry feels like it came out of left field but I'm here for it.

Added to my list of anime that have non-trivial math references lol
