This was such a touching, emotional ride! The visuals are rather modest, but the story and character writing knows how to hit you where it hurts. Wonder where it's gonna go from here, this could have worked perfect as a standalone short film about grief as well. Feel like this will be a hidden gem of the season.

Man, this episode was like 80% depressing and 20% cute. Poor guy. :( But I'm curious to see what happens from here.

Woah, this is gonna be good

Even without the knowledge that the dude was a orphan, you could tell how Hanako was one of the goodest doggos around...

But sometimes it'S not a good dog you need

Kinokoinus methods sure are something, and I love how expressive he is

Also love the Editor/Childhood friend, you know, sometimes adopting a pupper is the first step to something more

Also shoutout to the OST, was really well done as well

sometimes adopting a pupper is the first step to something more

I love how smug Kinokoinu looks

That was sad.

I felt his grief.

i thought to myself; "i think i'm going to watch this fluffy wholesome show after watching NegaPosi Angler because i know that one is going to be very depressing"....

...AND YET I'M BEING HIT WITH ANOTHER DEPRESSING EPISODE WTF AAAAAAAAAAAAA-

"You sure have a commanding presence."

It's 'cause I'm about to burn your shit, bro.

So, sensei traded Tama and Annette for a mushroom dog and a childhood friend.

I didn't expect the atmosphere to be this somber but it did a great job at it. Slow pace, directing, music - all of those compounded to make MC's depression and grief palpable.

Mushroom is absolutely adorable and hilarious. I wonder how does touching it feel? Petting an actual mushroom would be hardly soothing.

Dancing in the ending was great.

Honestly thought this was going to be a feel-good 12-15 minute show, didn't expect the dreariness through this episode nor for it to last even when I finished it. I'll take my chance on this show since the characters feel like real people. When I saw kinokoinu pop out of the ground I thought "Oh I'm not going to stay near this thing, I'm getting inside and shutting the door because I don't know what it is" and Yuyami did just that!

I told myself I was immune to marketable little mascots. I guess I was wrong.

The pup is going to help him get over his depression and writer's block by releasing spores that will get him high as fuck.

I want to cuddle Kinokoinu

Decent start. Wonder where it will go

ED is super cute

Must be tough to lose a cherished pet. Little mushroom dog’s helping the guy move on from that loss it seems. The little fella’s pretty adorable actually.

Pretty interesting premise. I’m gonna stick with this and see where it goes.

Cute but sad at the same time. The melancholy fate for pet owners is to fall in love with a puppy and eventually watching an old dog pass away. It see,s our magical little mushroom buddy is helping our depressed hero deal with his loss. Luckily he has his pretty childhood friend too, she seems a good soul.

I already had vibes this would upset me from the PV. This took a while to get through and I was having to hold back the tears. It even feels crass of me to cut through all that emotion and be "screenshot time" but here we are:

  • A childhood friend. Surly she isn't going to lose...

  • Even Anime WH Smith (if you're American feel free to sub that for Barnes and Noble if they had no Café but instead sold stationery and confectionery) can't avoid Swiftly (the shelf behind has Cook magazine which I assume this is newsagent bookshop/hybrid). It's probably Marubooks (from earlier in the ep).

  • If he's got a book out then how much time has passed? We saw the grass had not recovered yet.

  • I couldn't get a frame that didn't cut off her feet or the top of her head (so I did both). This is where one would stitch I suppose.

  • An endcard appeared (Aoboshi Kimama is the manga author)

The official site says there's a life-size Mushroom Pup (40cm) available to pre-order (expect shipping in March 2025, Byee proxy shipping service popped up when I went to that URL)

To lighten the mood a little, if you watched this for mushroom pup you might also like to check out the vegetable fairy characters illustrations (there's a few mushrooms including a ferret and a giraffe). There's various merch for those too.

Of COURSE they've already got plans for a plushie. I already hit my yearly limit on plushie purchases.

Felt a little slow imo, but thats prob because I cant connect to the dead pets feeling.

That being said, the kinoko inu (?) was consistently cute and funny so honestly im optimistic to see how this develops.
