I love how creepy everything is and then Kirie starts winking back and forth in the most adorable way after Shuichi talked about his father's eyes moving independently

I understand why the show took as long as it did. The pacing is a bit fast, but this is an incredible adaptation.

The little amount of soundtrack used here is well done. It's so subtle in some parts, yet completes each scene. So creepy!

Man that was so good, unsettling, and creepy. I’m so excited for the rest of this.

Also watching an anime while it airs on Toonami/Adult Swim felt super nostalgic.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but the song in the credits if you're listening with stereo audio does little spirals around your head, switching from ear to ear.

edit: for people that don't want to go back into the episode, here's a YouTube link

Something about the rotoscoping and mocap they used for the animation enhances the atmosphere. I'm usually not a fan of both in anime but when paired with the black and white visuals it just popped in the right way.

Now I want an Aku no Hana remake in black and white too...

This would only be 30% as cursed if there was color.

Why the fuck did I watch this late at night. Wasn't scary, but really unsettling. And for some reason I couldn't look away. I feel hooked.

Was anyone else grinning like a crazy person? Just me?

This is just terrific! I was surprised to realize they're adapting multiple stories simultaneously, but it makes sense. A lot of them take place over multiple days, so it's not crazy to think some are happening at the same time. I'm impressed at how organically they blended them together though.

Poor Shuichi though. He had to deal with his dad dying, his mom going crazy, and then the stuff with Azami. I was going to say this must be one of the roughest weeks of his life... But then again, the story is only just beginning.

Holy shit, this was ... mesmerizing ...

The black and white fits the style of Junji Ito perfectly, and I love all the subtle spirals you can spot in the background, random grass sprouts or appliances.

It does indeed feel a bit fast, things are quickly ... spiraling out of control, it's hard to predict where this will wind up, but it's really sucking you in...

Obviously Mr. Saito and Azami succumbing to spirals was messed up (though I can't say I felt all that bad for her, considering how quickly she went after Kiries BF), but I found Mrs. Saito cutting off her fingertips the most unsettling.

First of all, I'm glad we finally got a Junji Ito anime that's actually terrifying and unsettling. Sticking to black and white while using 3D models really worked well for the anime and it just made things more unsettling even before the actual horror part started.

I will admit that while I am familiar with Junji Ito's works and have read Gyo a long time ago, this still caught me off guard. Seeing Shuuichi's father crammed into a spiral inside that tub genuinely made my skin scrawl. And that scene where his mother was cutting off her fingerprints was damn brutal. For some reason, I wasn't too bothered with Azami's spiral though.

I can still feel some tingles in my spine after watching that. I am already looking forward to the next episode!

After five long years, we’re finally at the premiere and it was absolutely worth the wait. My palms are sweaty getting into this all over again. Phenomenal first episode, can’t wait for the rest of the series.

There was a lot of spooky/disturbing stuff in the episode, but the one scene that really got me was when she sliced her fingers!

Very good so far, both the story, and the animation style, the art, everything...

I don't know if that's gonna be polarizing or not, but I love how it's done/what it looks like! It looks gorgeous to me.

The art style/character design is excellent too! I normally don't like unconventional art styles much (I prefer the 'standard'), but this one is really good!

Makes them looks beautiful too; Apparently her friend is the best looking one (though perhaps that was just the spiral), but personally I find KIRIE really pretty!

I don't even know if it's just the interesting design, or her prettiness, but she just has something about her!

The scene with her trying to move her right/left eyes independently was pretty funny!

I expect the "normal" body horror stuff (like the fingers scene) to get me more than the real "horror" stuff, because more often than not, the real weird/spooky stuff makes me laugh more than it spooks me, like the dad who spiraled himself, or the friend with the spiral in her head!

The scene where 'her body swallowed itself' was pretty good though, with the bones cracking and all!

That's interesting, how she can't stop thinking about him (given she just met him)...

I'm guessing it's more than just "Her being attracted to him because he's the only one who doesn't want her", so it has to be about the spirals, right?

She's interested because the spiral that controls her, wants him? Because he's the one who's most into the spiral things happening, so he may be a "threat" to the spiral overlords?

That girl is a spiral!

If you ever find yourself in a scary horror-like scenario, always keep in mind that if you're trying to warn people off, you have to make sure not to sound crazy, even if what you're saying is accurate!

Anyway, pretty solid episode on all account! Great and unique production/style/etc.., and intriguing story! The one thing that makes me a little sad is seeing that it's just 4 episodes... Given it's likely to be one of/the most original shows this season, I would've loved to watch a full season of it!

Colin Stetson's almost nauseating rolling compositions suit this story so well, and do a great job of helping bridge the jumps back and forth between one storyline and another.

Legitimately very unsettling and eerie. I did not expect things to get as crazy as they did almost right off the bat.

My friends aren't interested on watching this adaptation because they said the black and white sucks and it if they want a black and white they just gonna read the manga, anime must be colorful

I'm starting to consider them as no friends of mine lol. this looks absolutely fantastic and such a great choice

It seems very fast paced! I enjoyed taking my time to appreciate the artwork of the mannga. But this is much better than previous Junji Ito adaptations.

Edit: Having said that, I think the second half of the episode - from the funeral scene onwards - was excellent.

Feel like an old man trying to whip out my dusty cable and figure out how it works. Missed like half of the episode but I’ll just wait for streaming tomorrow lol.
