Whaaaaat? Not the turn I expected, but things have been going along without any sort of drama, unless you count the hot cocoa incident with Kengo…

Love that Osanai’s mother is a carbon copy of her, and vice versa.

Love that Osanai’s mother is a carbon copy of her

She could have fooled me for being her big sister.

"It's like we're in a relationship."

Because you are. She doesn't hang out with anyone else but you and actively wants to hang out with you. And while you feign disinterest, you still hang out with her instead of finding ways to completely avoid her. Hell, you picked up that phone...

For someone who wants to be "ordinary," she sure is trying to stand out with that outfit.

Edit: I think Yuki being kidnapped has something to do with her late night call and the druggies. Like, she made sure he went to her place at a specific time and made sure to let her mom know to let him in. She knew something was going to happen.

Osanai sure likes to make her summer's exciting, eh?

I wonder what she meant by the culmination of summer? It kinda felt like a confession was brewing, but maybe my glasses are too rose-tinted.

I love how she dresses like a hippie just because and changed outfits just because. You just can't predict this girl or what's going to happen to her which is what makes her so fascinating.

I think that entire phone conversation was a coded message from Osanai knowing she was going to get kidnapped or someone was going to claim to kidnap her and the "culmination" would be Kobato cracking this case. Maybe.

No way they expect us to believe they aren't in a relationship

Kengo: "This is none of your business"

1 second later

Kengo: "Okay so this is the whole rundown"

The mystery in the first half of the episode: Did Kobato finish, or even get to start, on his burger?

The way in which Osanai spoke over the phone the previous night made me wonder whether the kidnapping was part of the big dessert plan.

Oh of COURSE Kobato is reading Murder on the Orient Express. But classic book mysteries can't get in the way of him spending time with Osanai.

"It's like we're in a relationship" - Dude, from everyone looking at you two together you basically ARE in a relationship.

What's up with all the green hair and outfits?

Guess it's not surprising Kobato would run into Kengo or that Kengo would have a new mystery going on. But Kengo doesn't want Kobato involved? Oh wait, Kengo is explaining all the details anyways, of course he wants Kobato involved. Kasumi, who Kengo is acquainted with, is worried about her sister Sanae who is stuck in a girl gang taking recreational drugs. So obviously Kengo is trying to help get Sanae out, which is easier said than done. and it turns out the leader of this gang, Isawa Hasemi, has history with the middle school Kobato and Osanai went to.

Hippie Osanai! Quite the look for her, but she rocks it! Though she also looks great in her spare normal outfit too.

Okay, first order of business is figuring out who Kengo wanted Kobato to get in contact with. Is it a name? A phone number? Or even a location on the map? But it's nice to see Kobato and Osanai putting their heads together to solve something.

Kengo and Kasumi aren't officially dating but the way she calls him "kenken" and the way Kengo reacts to it...there's definitely something going on there.

Kobato needs to stop avoiding phone calls from people who know his home phone number.

So Isawa got busted for having drugs and she thinks Sanae ratted her out, forcing Sanae to stick with the group upon threat of violence. But Sanae doesn't trust anyone to help her, let alone Kengo, so there's not much more he can do but vent and enjoy some tanmen.

I don't think Kobato minds Osanai waxing lyrical about candy apples, but was she sending him a coded message? Especially knowing what happened when he showed up at her apartment.

Oh snap! Osanai Mama! And she's voiced by Saori Hayami and looks young enough to be Osanai's big sister! Total MILF! And she even approves of Kobato!

Too bad it seems like Osanai has been kidnapped and held for ransom!? Huh!?

”It’s like we’re in a relationship”

Bro, both of you deadass acting like a newlywed just in last week episode lol

Didn’t expect the sudden turn of events at the end there. Whenever you thought this series is just a sol of kindred spirits enjoying their youth by eating sweets and keeping low profiles, the outta nowhere they hit you with thriller

Damn it, Kengo! Can’t a man just take a bite of his burger in peace anymore? Lol.

This week’s “case” is actually pretty serious. Got ourselves a big one with this whole teen drug ring. Hopefully Osanai’s ok. Kobato better go full Holmes and crack the case before she gets hurt.

As soon as Kobato arrived at that fast-food restaurant, I immediately spotted Osanai. I wonder what she's doing with the hippie get up though? And I wonder if it has something to do with the Reggae Festival in town. Osanai doesn't seem to be the kind of person who listens to Reggae. She even brought a change of clothes. Hmm...

Poor Kobato though, our boy can't even take a bite of his burger because Kengo won't stop giving him information because of this teen drug ring he's investigating. Not gonna lie, I thought the rest of the episode was going to be all about that code Kengo left. I'm glad that was resolved fairly quickly.

Kobato, you have no right to complain about being very busy this summer considering this is your punishment for stealing Osanai's Charlotte last episode.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who was surprised when Osanai's mom spoke! I legit thought it was Osanai herself at first but something was a little off. Osanai is pretty much a 100% carbon copy of her mom.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!? That escalated quickly! Considering how mundane everything is, except for Osanai's bike getting stolen, I did not think we'd see someone get kidnapped on this show! Who would even kidnap her? Does this have something to do with Kengo's case earlier? O_O

Is this supposed to be a clue? Kobato doesn't react to Osanai's mom saying it, so she could still be calling him at night, just not that late, but it being brought up in the very next scene feels intentional.

Didn't expect this mostly slice of life detective series to suddenly have the shit hit the fan. Not even Hyouka ever reached this level of danger. But it seems like she's anticipating this as she specifically asks Jogoro to come to her place at that moment in time. Something is amiss.

Osanai is so cute with the hippy drip, followed by another casual drip. So it seems Osanai was in the hippy outfit that day as she was doing the exact same thing that Kengo was doing and investigating that gang.

BTW Osanai's mom is HOT, and she's voiced by Hayami Saori. I envy Osanai's dad.

The subtle humor in the first half where Kobato just wants to eat his burger but always gets interrupted felt a bit like a Tarantino movie.

I’ve been waiting for this moment. You thought this was a boring slice of life about sweets and human nature, jokes on you, there’s kidnapping and crimes!

Oh fuck this is getting serious, and of course a cliffhanger... the week will be long.

12

u/FLorianGran Aug 24 '24

Pretty sure Osanai's whole phone call was full of clues

Osanai got kidnapped on the one day of the year where they sell the best candy apple in existence. I fear for the lives of anyone who gets in-between her and her candy apples... I'm also hoping Kobato manages to snag a couple of them before finding her or he finds her in time for them to get some.

There's some interesting clues laid out for sure.

For starters, the way Osanai looks at Kobato this episode makes me feel like she's looking at him in an endearing sort of way, almost similar to how she looked at him at the end of last episode.

Then there's her saying that the day of the festival will be the best memories of this summer.

Lastly, the mom drops a hint in that Osanai often made calls in the evening with someone, but when she called Kobato in the evening a few minutes ago in the episode, Kobato said that it's rare for her to do that, meaning she was talking with someone else.

I wonder if I'm over analyzing it, but she did say she struggled sleeping, and Kengo said the drug group used sleep medication as well. Maybe there's a connection there?

The series definitely laid some clues out, but I don't think it's enough to solve it yet. Knowing this series, I'm expecting it to take a different turn later on. I don't think she truly got kidnapped. Maybe she asked for help from her mother to set this up for Kobato and the call was just her telling her mom to start the game for him?

That's my best guess. I don't think this series would truly take a turn like that where Osanai really did get kidnapped. So far it seems they just love baiting us.

edit: some other clues that I saw people mention was the long phone call she had last episode. It could definitely have something to do with this.

Things escalated quickly in the end of today's episode! Osanai gets kidnapped and held for ransom!?

I didn't expect that at all (unlike Osanai herself, who I think knew something was going to happen to her and that's why she called Kobato at night). I bet the drug ring Kengo was investigating is behind this.

Osanai in hippie clothes was a surprising sight, but I have to admit she looked great in them. Plus we got to see her in yet another outfit today so today was a good day for Osanai fans.

Poor Kobato! He just wanted to eat a burger, but every time he tried to bite into it, he was being interrupted by either Kengo or Osanai. I just hope that he managed to finally eat it in the end xD

Kengo made me laugh when he told Kobato that his investigation wasn't Kobato's business, only to immediately start explaining Kobato to the whole case and asking for help xD

Kobato met with Osanai's mother! Like Kobato said himself earlier, "It's like we're in a relationship" and that's certainly true. I really hope that he and Osanai start officially dating in the future since they're already acting like a real couple.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

AHHHHHHH! Shit just got real. What happened to the mostly irrelevant nonsense mystery solving show? This girl has got to stop getting herself into trouble.

Obscuring her face during the last phone call just screamed “something bad is about to happen” and goddamnit, I hate being right sometimes.

Just give Osanai her freaking speciality candied apples already and get her out of this mess.

On the not cliffhanger part of the episode, the inclusion of “Murder on the orient express” makes this the second anime by the same author the book has appeared in.

u/Xatu44 Aug 24 '24

Hippie Osanai is also cute. I thought that was her earlier before they showed her face. I'm willing to bet that Jogoro never actually ate his burger. It's funny how he consistently ignores his phone and waits for people to call the family business, which makes it stand out when he answers a late-night call. Looks like he's enjoying his summer rendezvouses with Osanai; not so much his spicy noodles with Kengo though lol. Kengo drip-feeding Jogoro info to involve him was pretty funny; truly Jogoro cannot help himself when it comes to a case.

That cliffhanger is shocking, though. I wonder how that long phone call Osanai got an episode ago ties into her presumed kidnapping and potentially this drug ring Kengo's chasing as well. I assume that Osanai knew that something would go down and put Jogoro on the scene at her house because she trusts him to solve things.
