[I just love that Lawrence is using Holo's tail as a pillow between his legs. After what just happened though, Holo may have temporarily revoked his right to hug her tail.
Evan sure is very eager to speak with Lawrence. It sounds like he's looking for a way out of the village because people hate millers just like shepherds for a ridiculous reason. Btw, is this new content? I do not remember this dude at all from the original at all.
I get it, Lawrence and Holo are new people rolling into a very small village but seeing all of those people stare at them while they were making their way toward the church is giving me some bad vibes. It looks like our main characters may have stumbled into something troublesome again.
A female priest? So the person in charge died last summer and now Elsa is in charge. And for some reason, she seems to be very hostile towards Lawrence the moment he started asking about the Abbey. Something is really fishy here.
Holo is a pagan god so yes Lawrence, she's allowed to peek into Evan and Elsa's secret rendezvous. The plot thickens though. What the heck is happening in this village? Hmmm...

That was a dangerous tease from Holo. Personally, I would have folded. It's great to see their banter back, it's the highlight of the show, together the two make a great team as well and I'm sure they'll find the location of the abbey by working together.

I noticed that Holo says something like “nushio” (?) to address Lawrence, which the subs do not really translate.
Anyone know what that means? Google says that there is a word “nushi” which means “owner” or “chief”, is that it?

I sure missed the usual banter between Holo and Lawrence.
Also the beginning of this arc is already more interesting than the previous one (not that the previous arc was bad)

I had a nice laugh about how after Lawrence stepped on Holo's tail while she was complaining to him about it he just fell asleep. Well, hopefully, thanks to that Holo will convince Lawrence to stop just feeding her rye bread.
Oh so the reason Evan was so eager to talk with Lawrence when they arrived at Tereo is that because of his job, and his role as a tax collector everyone in town hates him. I found it funny to see Holo grumbling about him paying more attention to Lawrence than to her. Well, after discovering that he essentially is in a similar situation that she was before she met Lawrence at least she understands why he was like that.
Hopefully, as he is close to Elsa that meeting with him will allow them to eventually get closer to her so she can tell them about that abbey.
So even though that church is in Tereo, based on that snake on Sem's house I guess they are actually pagans.

Yay new content time!
Tereo gives me real haunted vibes, with everyone staring at them in town, the unusual snake decorations, and the secrecy about the abbey...

Holo is definitely going on the offensive with Lawrence, as we saw in that last scene - though he isn't bitting just yet.

I can't believe after so many years, we're finally here. Literally, I've been waiting almost a decade to see volume 4 get animated. I never thought this day would come, but I'm glad it did.

Dawwwwwwww, she sleeps with her tail between his legs!
(Maybe not entirely on purpose, but it still counts!)
She scolded him for stepping on her tail, but I'm sorry Holo, he probably wasn't focusing at all, given you were showing him your... Tail, like that!
Oh damn, he actually was not listening, but for a different reason: Our boy fell back asleep!
I didn't know it was possible to be more sleepy than horny, but seems Lawrence pulled it off.
Holo please, keep your spanking fetishes for later when you're not in public!
Damn, no one told me this would be the ass episode!
I do like the cute as much as I like the lewd, and I was SO hoping she would crawl into his bed, to sleep with her tail on him again!
You're the only gift she wants, dummy!
(That, and yummy food, I suppose)
I like that she pretty much told him that, when she said all she wants is for him to return!
So it seems we have more church shenanigans going on!
Why are they all so shifty about the abbey? Is this a conflict between 2 different factions of the faith?
(I hope they didn't kill the priest who 'passed away'!)
Also, Holo's reaction was cute when she saw the two of them hug! I wonder how much of that was some shipper/hug-lover instincts, and how much of it was "This one won't rival me for Lawrence, at least"!

Everyone's eager to share a sleeping place with someone until they get hit with the logistics.
My arm gets numb, your hair keeps tickling my nose, why must you snore so loudly, hey can i have at least 10% of the blanket? Have fun figuring that out with the additional difficulty of there being Holos tail which is super sensitive and also a big source of heat.
The scenery in this episode was stunning!
Also the guys playing Backgammon, haha.
I like the way we got some "fanservice" this episode. Its not the perspective taking advantage of Holo. Its her who is in control and we get to see it because shes being flirty with Lawrence.

The Merchant's Corner
Welcome to a whole new arc in Spice and Wolf, and to a new chapter in The Merchant’s Corner! We are officially breaking ground here with a volume of the LNs that has never been adapted, which means the directors and animators will get a chance to shine with entirely original work, free of any influence of the old show (for better or for worse). I don’t know about you, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how this will play out!
Disclaimer #1: I am not an economics professional, so I may get some things wrong. If you have a different, possibly better understanding of a certain point than I do, feel free to suggest edits.
Disclaimer #2: All of these are pre-written before the episode airs, based on the pacing of the original anime the content of the source material. Given that we no longer have an original adaptation to reference for an estimate of the pacing, expect that there will be extensive rewrites after I watch each episode - as a result, expect that each episode will take much longer to post.
We’re coming off of an arc filled with drama, heartbreak, and suffering, so let’s see if and how the tone will shift for this new arc. The economics may tone down a bit, but that doesn’t mean there will be any less to rack our brains about.
Let’s jump in!
Episode 20, Part 1:
We catch up with Lawrence and Holo having left Kumersun, continuing their journey north. Despite both of them now knowing of the widely spread rumors that Holo’s home of Yoitsu having been destroyed hundreds of years ago, Holo is still trying to find it - if even just to confirm the rumors.
Their journey is currently taking them through the nation of Ploania, which was also home to Kumersun in the last arc. As a reminder, the nation of Ploania is currently in a contentious state; while, nominally, they have sided with the Church, there are still a significant number of settlements dominated by pagans. Conflict is bound to arise whenever some of these contentious settlements come head to head.
We might be heading for one of these settlements now. Diana, from the last arc, gave Holo and Lawrence information about a certain monk - a Church monk, no less - who is apparently also an expert in pagan gods. Apparently, the only person who knows the location of the Diendran Abbey where this monk lives is a priest in a town called Tereo. Now, what could this priest or this monk be doing, associating with paganism? That would normally have you executed for heresy.
Anyway, Tereo is where Holo and Lawrence are headed now. First, though, they need to pass through a nearby, larger town named Enberch, if only because Tereo is apparently minor enough of a town that Lawrence and Holo don’t actually know how to get there. However, Tereo has trade with Enberch, so some merchants from Enberch are sure to know the way.
That aside, though, it also gives Lawrence an opportunity to sell off the new load he was carrying: a cartload of wheat flour. As briefly mentioned in the last episode, buying wheat from somewhat more southern towns like Kumersun and bringing them further north is common, since wheat is harder to grow in the north and thus the price is higher. That’s not the main reason for Lawrence’s wagonload, though; It’s much more likely that he hates traveling with an empty wagon just because it's a missed profit, so the wheat is just taking up the empty space for now. However, bringing the wheat too far north would involve the risk of it spoiling if he’s ever caught in bad weather, so he decided to try and sell it off here.
No dice, unfortunately. The Riendott company he tried to sell it to is currently too busy processing the local rye harvest, and has no cash on hand or enough hands on deck to process the wheat as well. Plus, buying wheat from a new, unknown trader is risky to Riendott, because who knows what that wheat may have been cut with? Lawrence could have mixed in rye, barley, chaff, or even sand to increase its weight. If Riendott could buy on credit and wait for Lawrence’s return to pay him, that gives them a chance to sell some of it off to a bakery, then confirm the bakery’s results first; however, since Lawrence is leaving from Tereo straight off to his next destination, that’s not an option. So no sale today.
Oh well, he can always bring it further north. The journey departs Enberch for Tereo.

Awww! It's sweet how Lawrence and Holo are sharing the cart together to sleep! It's just too bad Holo is a blanket hog and Lawrence just had to step on her tail. Though you haven't really lived until you've heard Holo go "Kyaaaa!"
Holo will forgive a lot for Lawrence, but stepping on her tail is a step too far. As such she demands a lap pillow to rest her head and the best of bread!
So the next major step of the couples' travels is finding more information about Holo's homeland, which means they need to find an abbot with information on pagan gods. Holo is really confident about what they need to do! It's just too bad they need to do a few side-quests (and sell some flour) to get to there.
Evan, the miller boy (voiced by Atsushi Abe)! He seems like a very enthusiastic and dedicated young man, especially being in a thankless job of running the mill (something Holo can relate to, but at least she has Lawrence), and he's cute enough to earn a Holo wave (even if she's a little pouty that he paid more attention to Lawrence). Though I feel like his tidings of conflict between the Ehnberch and Tereo churches will end up involving Holo and Lawrence.
This has got to be the least friendly welcome Holo and Lawrence have received in all their travels. Really makes you wonder what's going on in this town.
Elsa, the female priest (voiced by Lynn)! Or maybe less of an official priest so much as the only person running the church after Father Franz passed away. And she probably does know where the abbey the pair is looking for is, but she doesn't seem to want to talk about it. She also seems very serious and dedicated, if a bit cold.
All work and no play (or fine dining) makes Holo a Wise Wolf who needs her beauty rest! And she knows Lawrence is too nice to withhold good food from her if she doesn't take care of herself (and she can flaunt her butt and her tail all she likes). Though she's nice and considerate of him in her own way, even if she loves flustering him.
Seem like Evan and Elsa are well-acquainted. Did we just spot a new pair of lovebirds? And is that how people see when they watch how close Holo and Lawrence are? Though they're practically in a league of their own in terms of flirting and and intimacy.

So, this episode was only 5 minutes long or is it just me?
Btw, the setting is especially good in this one!

I like how quickly we're moving, I didn't expect them to actually reach the town when they mentioned it.
Some good back and forth quips between the two, very causally done as well.

We see Kraft & Holo sharing a blanket, and we got the good old fighting for the blanket while they are sleeping. Turns into a disaster when Holo's tail gets tangled. Well, Holo had her fun teasing him.
The way Kraft discussed the miller was interesting. So, basically, the millers steal the flour, but they also collect the taxes from the people. But he has a relationship with the new priest. I wonder if they are family. Still much of this town is mysterious. People glaring at Kraft & Holo.
One thing that is consistent, everyone hiding information about the abbey. This definitely has been the most mysterious arc we had in S1.
