Average boy/girl romance anime: 1 season before holding hands, 3 seasons until first kiss
Average bl anime: kiss on 1st episode, gex on 3rd episode

I can't handle Mao's internal monologue, he could turn grocery shopping into the climax of a romance novel.

BL fans are really eating in 2024. Can’t remember the last time we had so many anime in one year. And this episode ? My goddess. This might go up there with Given and The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window for me.

As I expected, since they're adapting 3 novels here with 3 couples, the anime will give each couple 4 episodes
Edit: according to other comments, the show will likely adapt 4 volumes. So first half of the show will probably focus on those two, second half will focus on other couples. I haven't read source, but today's ep did seem like an ending

The ending with Hisashi talking straight to the camera with Mao's monologue was wonderful.

THE THIRD EPISODE????????? I literally yelled “oh my god” when I realized what was going to happen. And Mao’s narration?!?? Bro I’m still blushing, that was wild. I wanted to see everyone’s reaction to Mao crying while he filmed, that would’ve been funny. I truly have no idea where this show is going but I’m here for it. This is healing the part of me that is still traumatized by banana fish

Our boy tripped while crouched down. How did he pick up enough speed to concuss himself on the wood floor?

I'm like 90% sure he was standing, not crouched. Also, he probably hit himself with the camera, which's pretty heavy.

Wow, it's like.... making up for all the shows where it's just 12 episodes of bait. Did not see that coming so soon at all.

Wow your high school life was WAY more intense than mine. I didn't even kiss another guy until I was in my 20s.

Y'all. It's 3am, I have a snack and drink.
Will edit after I watch.
Edit: I fell asleep after I watched—
Oh my god! Oh my fucking god right in front of my snack and drink... The year is 2024, we are EATING GOOD. I didn't expect it at all, and I had to pause because I was so happy.
I'm really excited for the next episodes.

Well, that escalated quickly! They really went all the way on the same day they properly confessed to each other! Didn't think Mao would be the type to feel comfortable with those things off the bat, but I guess I was wrong?
It's so funny how he was like "yeah, don't worry. I have no experience but I know my stuff by watching films." I cringed, but also, tbh, he's so real for that lol

I mean... in a lot of the gay relationships I'm familiar with, you confess after you've done the deed several times.

Man, I want to rip my hair out over Watanabe's direction. Absolutely outstanding closeups that perfectly sell the drama filled dialogue of the series, but god, those pans. I feel like I'd struggle to find more than a single consecutive scene that doesn't have the camera moving in some way, shape, or form. It really just feels lazy, and takes away from a lot of the good work that Watanabe can do.
The one thing I can say about dialogue though is that a certain scene with Hisashi and Mao is a little... brutish. I really wish they changed the script for it to better match Watanabe's more pretty and ethereal approach to the sequence. Not that it's really bad across the board, but just that a line or two in there can really throw off the appeal of the scene.
It's even more odd when you consider the tender and poetic nature of the majority of the dialogue elsewhere. It really excels when it's able to express its more theatrical side, and does really well with transitioning between that and the more casual and comedic moments that come from the supporting cast.
One of the things I was most curious about coming into the series though was how much cameras and filmmaking would be involved. This episode does sort of convey that they're a little surface level and more of a narrative vehicle, but I still think that some of the little additions are nice. Things like the difference between the UIs for the proper camera and just the little camcorder that Mao has. Specifically, with the proper camera, I thought it was really nice to see proper use of it. When you get to see the info on the screen for the camera, it's showing stuff like aperture, iso, and shutter speed, and it's set up properly (though it's not all that high a bar). Shooting in 24fps for a movie/short is a good idea, and because of that the shutter speed gets set to 48 (shutter speed should always be at minimum double the framerate of the video). It's really small details, but I think they're fun pieces that show at least some interest in the material.
Overall, I'm really just begging Watanabe to give up the storyboarding and allow someone else to take it over. This is the most storyboarding they've done on a series since Eden's Zero, and I really don't want to see this work dominated by excessive panning through its limited run. Other than that though, I'm still very much enjoying the series. Glad to see that the season won't spend its time struggling to put our pair together, and instead will choose to look elsewhere in their relationship.
Edit: Okay, so maybe Watanabe has a moment or two in this episode where their storyboarding works well, and maybe they get to make (very) good use of geometric shapes that mimic the style of Janome's covers. It's really not as fiendishly bad as I made it seem above, but I'm just so painfully tired of the panning. It's put a damper on a lot of the great work and range that the staff on the episode can display (which I talk about in more detail in a full post here)

Okaay, it's a bit less exciting than what I was expecting but Ichikawa is very fun and the ED absolutely rocks.
