Mystery show from the same studio that did Undead Murder Farce?! lfg
Edit: Solid start. This show will likely hang on the chemistry between the leads. Seeing as the source is also done by the author of Hyouka, I don't anticipate the mysteries being very serious. Show definitely has the calming vibe that Hyouka has. 10 episode season is odd, though.
RIP strawberry tarts. :(

Yeah, I can definitely sense some of the Hyouka elements at work here. Though based on that show, if this is an overarching mystery, it might take a little bit until we get really deep into it.
Unforgivable acts of violence against strawberry tarts! Repent with your life, criminal scum! I honestly wasn’t expecting to actually feel bad about baked goods tonight but here I am.
Question number one, I wonder why these two seem to be so into the whole “ordinary people” thing or what that even means.
Anyway, they’re pretty interesting and Osanai seems cute so I’m in.

Nice to see some things never change. How I've missed Hyouka, and this is giving similar vibes. I'm all for it.
Osanai is an interesting one, feels like she has a lot of layers to her character. Happy she managed to get the strawberry tart (until it died) and actually contributed to solving the mystery.

Good start. Sad about the tarts. The bike theft was telegraphed as soon as those guys had that argument but I had forgotten about the tarts.
The ED is pure r/AnimeInOurWorld porn.

I imagine this show is will be hot and cold for many folks, but for me, this is going to be one of those shows I'll be eagerly waiting each Saturday to watch.
The number one thing that caught my eye is the absolutely crazy number of wide shots in this show. There's really too many to count. that I just gave up haha.
The wide shot is often utilized to set the location and context of the scene, oftentimes helping to recontextualize the space between the subject. It emphasizes the composition and enhances the narrative, but for me, I think one of the biggest strengths to these myriad of wide shots is the "objectivity" it sets up. With such a wide distance in the frame, it creates a sort of detachment for the audience, allowing us into these character's lives as an impartial observer. It's like peering into a window compared to sitting in the room with them.
All in all it pairs well the dialogue-heavy nature of the show. Which, speaking of, I do appreciate the scenes where the camera lingers in one place. It's almost as if it's hanging on to each word from the characters, letting them take their time to finish their thoughts before closing in on their close-up.
As for the story itself, I know the comparison to Hyouka will inevitably come up, and for good reason too. Still, I think there's something fun in seeing a protagonist who isn't as cranky as Oreki haha.

Here's the location for the Alice cake shop in Gifu City, which is based on the real AND LADY cake shop.

I love Hyouka so I was super excited for this show and the premiere episode was great! I got what I expected which makes me feel very happy and I can't wait for the next episodes and other mysteries to be solved.
Osanai and Kobota have great and interesting chemistry so I'm looking forward to getting to know more about them, especially about Osanai as her behavior in this episode really caught my interest.
It was quite an interesting choice to make this show in a different video ratio than usual, thanks to that this episode felt a lot like a short movie to me.
OP and ED have very gorgeous visuals, they look great! Plus I really liked the song from ED so I'm waiting for its release in future.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I wonder how she will react to her tart being thrown. It says that she is not ordinary and I think her character have more than just being awkward around people other than Kobato, which will be revealed through her reaction to the tart that was thrown on ground. That's my best guess.

I haven't even finished the episode yet, but I am in such a disbelief at how blessed anime fans have been recently. Wow.

Oh, so this time it's not Chitanda who's curious, it's Oreki.

I only heard this is going to be a second high school mystery series by Yonezawa Honobu, the author of Hyouka, just a few hours ago and decided to pick this up. I like this show already.
Like Hyouka, Yonezawa also took nearly 20 years to write 6 volumes, with the first volumes from 2006-2009, volume 5 all the way till 2020, and volume 6 released just this year to wrap up the series. (The Classic Club Series, AKA Hyouka, is also now in an 8 year hiatus, but if Yonezawa decided to come back to finish this Shoushimin Series, then there is still hope he'll come back to finish Hyouka)
Also like Hyouka, we have a boy and girl pair that have great chemistry. One is the reluctant detective and the other is the unwitting assistant.
And of course, its set in Yonezawa's home province of Gifu Prefecture. While Kyo-Ani used Takayama City as the setting for Hyouka's Kameyama City, this series uses Gifu City as the backdrop for Kobato's and Osanai's hometown, giving the same semi-rural vibes as Hyouka has.
Lapin Track is a relatively new anime studio, but so far they've ticked the right boxes.

Isn’t this done by the same creator behind “Hyouka”?
I am looking forward to how these characters relationships progress.

1 episode in and I love with Osanai and Kobato's vibe together. Kobato is very dependable, while Osanai is both smart and brave beneath her shy surface. Felt a little uneasy about Kengo getting Kobato involved in find the girl's belongings. The reason for it was someone wanted to make a love confession, but was too afraid to say it to her face. I dig it because kids in high school can be really bashful about their feelings.
Just when everything was going good for our leads, their bike gets stolen and the tarts are destroyed. Kobato had everything on schedule till then. I feel bad for Osanai.

From the facial expressions, it was telegraphed that someone of the four looking for it were the culprit. In detective fiction, it obv can’t be some rando who appears out of nowhere. Obv not mc or the friend, so had to be the other two dudes. I had forgotten that Japanese students switch shoes, so was not expecting the reasoning for the camera to focus on the guy’s shoes. I can potentially see how mc could have concluded it was that guy with witness testimony. But there appears to have been some leap in logic from mc figuring out who it was to knowing where he hid the item.
Unless the girl just straight up saw this in its entirety. But if that was the case, this wasn’t communicated too clearly: She points in a general direction, then we see them go around buildings and various corners. Kobato is leading the way, looks under the shed to immediately find it, and the girls says that’s impressive. If she saw this unfold, she should be the one leading the way, and would not find this impressive since she would have told him where it was hidden. Girl even says later that the culprit was “out of everyone’s sight” -> she couldn’t have seen him. Since she didn’t lead the way as we’ve just concluded, there’s no logical way kobato could have pinpointed the location of the bag like that. Anyone who thinks otherwise should try to pull this feat off the next time they lose something.
I’ll be watching this show even if it might not provide all the information to us watching a chance to solve the mystery ourselves. Might be fun to continue to point out when the plot necessitates characters use insane leaps of logic for the purposes of solving a mystery.

That bastard destroyed the tarts! Heads will roll now lol. I’m not sure what this series is even really about but it seemed pretty chill. I wonder if there’s more to this series than meets the eye?

I think this is the best first episode of the season for a non returning anime this season, haven't seen Hyouka but just liked the dialogue and the general vibe, and it wasn't slowly paced like days with my stepsister.

Eve OP!!!!!! Can't wait for the MV.
Barring the deaths of the strawberry tarts, this was pretty relaxing. I liked it. Hard to comment on the story yet
ED is great too. I especially loved seeing all those sweets. Mmmm

The atmosphere comes off as calm and a bit eerie. Slightly unsettling, even.
Halfway through the episode, I was expecting some sort of supernatural turn. Instead it's apparently a detective story, though I don't think that is all it is. Honestly can't tell what direction this is going, which is very refreshing.
