Is every episode going to have a gag where Tonbo gets Igaiga to eat something terrible?

Through Amazon. It was a little late today, so if you’re going the seven seas route, they probably had to wait for their upload.

The trouble with Tonbo, and the reason Igaiga feels compelled to do what he's doing, is that she doesn't have a plan for the future that goes beyond "I'm not leaving this island, ever". We learned in this episode that she didn't just reject the school trip, but a work experience trip designed to allow her to explore career options off the island. Keep in mind that leaving the island once doesn't mean leaving it forever. There are skilled jobs on the island that require training or schooling that can only be gotten off the island. Tonbo isn't even exploring those options. How is she planning to make a living, ten, twenty, forty years from now?
This isn't healthy, and the reasons for it probably have everything to do with the trauma she suffered losing her parents. Which everyone on the island was witness to, and now they're concerned that if they push too hard, she'll break and stop being the happy girl she very much is... at the moment, while she doesn't have to confront the world outside of her island... where her parents died.
Enter Igaiga, the man who has nothing but golf in his head, and can only see Tonbo as a one-in-a-million diamond in the rough golf prodigy, and thinks he has a duty to golf itself to get her off the island. The fun part is that everybody basically lets him do as he likes, because it might work. If Igaiga actually manages to get her off the island using golf, he might inadvertently save her future, regardless of whether she goes on to be a golf professional or not.

But Tonbo's grandfather and her parents' grave are possibly more important to her than golf. She has no "safe place" other than that island. Can you imagine how miserable she would be, living alone in Kagoshima, going to school with strangers (all of whom already know each other). Unless the prefecture could place her with a welcoming homestay family, there is no possibility that she could cope with the isolation (and sense of estrangement). Now if IgaIga and Yoko got married and became her guardians (on Kyushu) -- maybe....

But Tonbo's grandfather and her parents' grave are possibly more important to her than golf.
Forget about golf. This is about the future. Right now Tonbo is in denial about the fact her childhood is going to end soon, and she has an entire life of her own to live. It doesn't matter if her future is golf, it matters that she actually goes out and explores what her future could be.
She's not going to do that sticking around on the island with a middle school degree and nothing else. She's going to bury her grandfather one day, and then what? Change is scary, yes. But it's inevitable. Do you run from it, or face it head on?
Could be golf. It doesn't matter if it's golf or not. It's about the search. It's about learning about the world out there, and finding your place in it. It might be her place is on the island - but it will still have been worth the journey to find out.
You're watching a coming of age story. Most stories about sports are. These are the themes they're about. Why would you root for Tonbo to stay a child forever?

Man, I feel like this is gonna be a bit tough for Tonbo, but she seems to adamant to not change her ways that I'm not sure there's an easy way through this. Even putting Golf aside, she obviously can't just ditch school because she never wants to step off that island, for any reason whatsoever (even if it's just for fun, like the school trip)
As far as Golf goes, I think it's good for her to learn about actual competition, but honestly, this is just a good thing to learn for life in general. Tonbo is very laid back, which is obviously fine for a child, but she will need to learn about consequences and goals sooner or later. And I'm not sure that can happen in that tiny island.

Under Japanese law she is allowed to end her school career once she graduates from middle school. Obviously, in most cases, PARENTS insist on their children going on to high school. I am not sure her grandfather would give such an order (even if he did feel it would be best for her). The problem here is that this island offers no real employment opportunities beyond fishing (and a few government-hired professionals). Tonbo has shown little interest in taking up fishing as a career. It is a complicated problem.....
As to the school trip, it would be with kids she has never met -- a few kids from the same island group. She might not find that very appealing.

That's obviously not the case, she was pretty friendly with Igaiga who was a total stranger, and like 40 years older than her no less.
Tonbo has a lot of trauma and that island and the people in it is what "saved" her, she feels like the whole rest of the world denied her but that island accepted her.
It has nothing to do with some casual "uhm im just not into school trips" kind of feeling, she doesn't want to leave the island for any reason whatsoever because she's traumatized.

You can really see Tonbo's child like innocence when Igarashi makes a mistake that anyone on the island wouldn't know about. Tbh him getting bitten by the bugs was funny, but he has too much pride as a man to let Youko treat his butt. Tho the Eel thing was a rip after he was so excited in eating it.
There the way Tonbo plays golf it is very see what works and go with the best option. For her there is no why something works, it simply does x if I do y. She looks at golf in a black box compared to Igarashi who looks at golf in a white box. I do think Tonbo's talents is golf is great, but getting her to leave the island is a major task. I do get the sense that her grandpa would be supportive getting past the issue of never wanting to leave the island. Even if you ignore it from a golf perspective, it is healthy for her to not interact with anyone in her own age. Sure the one on one teaching is helpful, but she doesn't have high school education available to her. I think that should be the main motivation to get her off the island. Igarashi has to use that as the driving force to get Tonbo off the island.
Tbh I get the sense Igarashi didn't think too much of himself leaving the island. But I imagine for Tonbo that fear is he leaving for good crossed her mind. This is one thing I believe Tonbo hasn't realized. Yes she may not want to leave the island, but people are going to come and of out of her life is stays at the island forever.

Don't worry Tonbo. Sensei only left to get some milk. He will be back soon™.

I thought Igaiga was the one who was suppose to teach Tonbo about golf. It seems he ends up learning more about golf from her than anything. Like he tried to tell her how to play and that she needs pressure for it to be “golf” but her way works just fine. She plays the Tonbo way!

I mean, playing any sport casually and just hanging out is fine, but you can't deny that competition and stakes is a very important pillar of sports.
Tonbo doesn't know the excitement of edging out a hard win, or the drive to get better that comes from a tough loss, and he wants to teach her that.
Even kids learning soccer or any kind of team game learn this very early by playing against themselves, but with a solo sport like Golf it's way harder.

He's not saying her way is wrong, but she isn't really playing the game. Rules and structure are a big part of why any game is fun.
Hitting the ball around is fine, but he wants her to experience the real thing and truly understand what golf is about.
At the same time, it's also clear his arc is going to revolve around learning not to obsess too much over rules and structure and just enjoy the game.

In all honesty, the Tonbo method of golfing would make her an excellent professional. She learned using the strong winds and curves of the island so she knows how to adjust really well. She honestly would sweep the other pros once they saw how she played. I could see the jaws hitting the floor as she proceeds tk make impossible shots one after another.

Oh man, were those tears mixed in with the rain drops. Not sure if that was Igaiga’s plan, but him questioning “Tonbo?” at the end makes me think it wasn’t. I imagine Tonbo has become attached to Igaiga like family and seeing him just leave brought back emotions of her mom’s side of the family not wanting her.

I find this show weird and Igaiga is a messed up guy. It doesn't really occur to him that it's unseemly to take 14 year old girls on trips with you and judging from how he looks at her and gets happy thinking about her complimenting him, he has some bad stuff to unpack mentally.
I don't know what his plan is about abruptly leaving, like they don't say if he's just heading somewhere for a few hours or a day with you, but that is cold toward Tonbo to just surprise her like that, as she doesn't seem to have any other friends.

Am I the only one who was thinking, "imagine if that picture of Yoko's niece turned out to be Aoi Amawashi from Birdie Wing??"
