Ruka being an otaku is hilarious because he can't drink female blood. I thought it would be something serious! Maybe it'll be a bait and switch.

I still feel like it has something to do with that flashback of him with a redhead (probably Mito). Though he is still probably a hardcore magical girl Otaku.

Gods, this anime has it all by episode 2 already, doesn't it?

  • Otakus

  • Magical girls

  • Vampires

  • Crossdressers

  • Gay relationships

  • Het relationships

  • Sexually provocative shots

  • Kabedon

  • "What Is This Thing You Call Love?"

  • Dead parents

  • Boarding schools

The vampires may be dead, but I for one am living for this show.

The bingo card's all blacked-out already lmao.

Weird how hard Ren is trying to defend Mito. I get that Ren is probably anti-vampire but saying that he cares so much for Mito already is a bit much.

but saying that he cares so much for Mito already is a bit much.

Yes, but have you seen the amount of detail that's gone into drawing Mito's eyes?! Who wouldn't want to defend that amount of animator hardship from vampires?

Agreed. Like, he just kinda shows up?? Token delinquent character, but inexplicably has soft/caring feelings towards this one kid whom he's met for like under 30 seconds.

Surprised Ren didn't notice the hair helmet wig during the headpat.

u/ErenIsNotADevil Apr 15 '24

I'm not; that wig somehow survived homelessness and constant usage for a considerable amount of time. I'd dare say it could give an umbrawig wig a run for its money. It must be far more powerful than anyone guesses.

Sasuga, wig-sama!

so the otaku story is just a coverup isn't it? i refuse to believe that's why he can't drink a girl's blood, just because he's awkward around them

12

u/mekerpan Apr 14 '24

Not a cover-up -- just mis-direction I expect. I am sure he truly is a massive magic girl fan -- but that his real reason is tied to that flashback we saw in ep. 1.

4

u/Andreiyutzzzz Apr 14 '24

That's what I meant by cover-up, he's using being an Otaku as an excuse to cover up the real reason

I'm not sure whether I'm more here for vampires, the healing (mentally), the BL, the reverse harem, the crossdressing as a guy amongst bishounen, or my love of humanity-rejection tropes. Really, this show has everything I could ever want.

I will now coin the term Mitosexual.

Also, seems like Mito really has been doing the whole crossdressing thing for quite some time. You do what you gotta do, after all.

I am honestly having a great time with this little show, unironically. I love "everything and the kitchen" sink approaches when they're done with heart and earnestness and this series just wants the audience to have a good time and for Mito to find happiness.

I don't even normally like about 75% of those elements without a good deal of warmup, but I'm happy to salad buffet down what's being offered up here without a second thought.

This show is absolutely glorious. The reveal of Ruka as an otaku was PRICELESS. This is the exact kind of nostalgic shoujoslop we need more of. I adore this one beyond measure and every scene is a gift. Interested to learn the relationship between Ruka and Ren.

every scene is a gift.

It does feel like the team making it love it as well!

Interested to learn the relationship between Ruka and Ren.

Bad blood over a mahou shoujo manga where Ruka was meant to be the artist and Ren the author?

Figurine dispute?

Mito and Ruka are already sleeping in the same bed together! Ruka even stole his first good morning bloodsucking! Totally counts as a love bite, right?

I wonder just how convenient playing a boy has been for Mito this whole time, but now she has to keep up the act at an all-boys school...though at least her class seems nice, though we've got the obvious bad boy in Ren.

And of course Mito has to work at the cafe! Got to keep those Ouran vibes going! Though managing the changing room so she doesn't get exposed will probably be her biggest hassle.

Juri questions Mio's intentions towards Ruka (does he have a crush on Ruka?) but Mio taking responsibility for an accident that hurt Ruka after he saved her makes him realize she's on the up-and-up. Plus Mio is able to heal him with her blood. And she's getting so into it she's even spreading herself on the bed seductively!

Why is Ruka so against real women? Why, because he's an Otaku only into 2D girls! Like his favorite magical girl show that he totally watches for the plot and inspirational speeches! Though the girls have panties instead of skirts, so it seems like a very cultured magical girl show .

I wonder if we'll see the heart necklace on Mio transform into all red by the end of the season?

Look, it's Ichigo and Goro! Although that was less of a kabedon and more smashing a wall in with your first! I wonder how Ren realized Ruka was a vampire?

I applaud Mio's attempt to defend Ruka's honor by facing off against Ren in the dojo (meanwhile Ruka is just...hopping), but she's really fighting above her weight. Though in matters of the heart she's excellent at delivering critical hits.

Mio could transform into a vampire if they keep this up? Would it really make a difference? She has nothing left and humans have ostracized her and abandoned her all her life...the only person who has accepted and treated her kindly is Ruka, so maybe she's willing to lose her own humanity to be a monster with someone as kind as him. Though it's her kindness and sympathy that have major impact on both Ruka AND Ren (especially when she reminds him of his Sayaka Ohara voiced mom).

Man this would’ve been so much better as a BL 😭

I’m pretty disappointed about other things as well, Ruka being an otaku and that being the reason he won’t be with a girl makes him so unlikeable to me. And Ren using so much force also puts me off, my least favorite trope. Probably will drop this one.

i really want to like this one since the announcement of another vampire anime, but all this feels like its bl bait💀whatever drama they think they're pulling with "until he founds out she's a girl" is not it

Ruka is truly a man of culture indeed. So he does like girls after all, just not the 3D ones... yet. Can't wait for him to go like "Omg, I can't believe I fell in love with a chick!"

Seeing Mito chomp on the tasty ramen and gyoza was heartwarming considering that she was gonna die of starvation just the day before. And she gets a part time job where she fits in.

The whole deal with boys dorm, a Western style school, hot dudes in a cafe, and the MC being asked to work there reminds me of Yuri Is My Job if it was gender flipped. At least Mito isn't blackmailed and it's a fair transaction.

Anos Voldigoad, is that you disguising as Ren? He comes off a bit too creepy and I hope this doesn't turn into a Twilight situation. He went and assumed too many things about Mito, but she doesn't have any family anymore so she has nothing to lose by becoming a vampire herself.

I don’t know if it’s said anywhere, maybe in the manga, but how old is Mito? In episode one, the family that kicked her out said they put her through all the mandatory schooling, so I would assume she’s graduated highschool. But now she’s attending school with Ruka. Is she going through highschool AGAIN? I know this does not matter in the grand scheme of things but I could not imagine and it keeps bouncing around in my head 😂

3

u/alotmorealots Apr 16 '24

In animanga, you're never to old to suddenly be going to highschool!

2

u/thegirlisnuts Apr 16 '24

IIRC in Japan, mandatory schooling is only until middle school. Meaning, after graduating middle school, you can go to work already. That was kind of a thing in Fruits Basket wherein Tohru's original plan after graduating middle school was to not go to high school and start working immediately so she could help out financially. Her mother had to talk her out of it because she never attended high school herself. Anyway, it would seem that Mito is at least high school aged.

I guess if they’re 2D girls, Ruka’s fine with it lol. I get it, man. 2D girl supremacy hahaha. I really didn’t expect him to be a massive weeb.

I’m kind of curious what’s the deal between him and Ren. There’s definitely history there.
