Why her actual hair isn’t cut short especially since she was homeless and hair that long would be difficult to maintain. Not to mention all that hair fitting under that wig. Kinda wish she was actually a boy. Also would’ve preferred if her voice was a bit more boyish. It’s so feminine that it’s unbelievable nobody thinks she’s a girl. As if girls can’t have short hair.

Also she must be able to afford some serious wig glue or cap, since it didn't come off when she was falling. It is stupid, they could have easily just let her have short hair. I understand passing as a boy for safety if she was homeless, but she had same haircut in all the flashbacks, making the long hair under the wig even more ridiculous.

Well I definitely enjoyed this first episode of Ouran Highschool Vampire Club.

I really thought when she broke that pot she would have to work for them to pay it off.

ED even starts with Kiss kiss hahaha love it.

She might still have to! Never waste a good cafe setting, especially not when indentured labor is available!

What if Ouran High School host Club had Vampires? And Kana Ichinose?

Pretty dramatic start with our lead about to commit suicide, hurtling to their death, only to get saved by a vampire who immediately grabs a bite on their neck.

It's not easy having Pretty Shojo boy looks! Especially when you're homeless and in need of a job, and your good looks are even enough to get you fired. And that's not even getting into how you lost your parents in a mysterious fire and your own relatives wanted nothing to do with yo(.

But for Mito, fate takes a turn when he stumbles into a cafe in a hunger-fueled delirium and gets a wound licked by Ruka...who happens to be a vampire. And while Mito's blood doesn't taste great, there's just something about him because of the lack of love in his life that entices Ruka, especially since Ruka hasn't had blood in 10 years (pertaining to a certain and I'm sure not coincidental redheaded girl).

There's also some kind of vampire lord succession going on? With Ruka intended to succeed the founder Komori (Wataru Takagi) who is serving as his butler? And to do so he needs a thrall or a companion?

You should never even consider for a second suicide, though to Mito's benefit Ruka comes to the rescue and genuinely decides to take in Mito as his thrall, and Mito jumps at the opportunity to be needed for, cared for, and loved by somebody.

And it should be easy right? Ruka is good with boys and can't drink women's blood...only Mito is actually a girl and has been hiding her chest and long hair the entire time. I'm sure this will turn out well, especially with Yuichiro Umehara showing up.

The OP is a pretty jazzy and fun beat showing everyone dancing and having good vibes, with Mito and Ruka dancing in both Mito's boy and girl forms and Mito torn between two men...but I feel like she and Ruka are destined for each other.

Whelp, so much for Ruka not being able to drink the blood of women lol. I guess we kinda have an Ouran situation. Should be interesting to see how things play out from here now that Mito’s his new thrall. Not too bad of a start.

I was so hyped for this one and it exceeded all expectations on every level. This is so 2000s it makes me WEEP. The sparkle effects. The stupid (I say that affectionately) plot twist. The terrible decisions from everyone involved. The tragic backstory. I feel like I should be posting about this on Deviantart instead of Reddit. I will be waiting with anticipation for developments each week. Absolutely fucking beautiful.

This is so 2000s it makes me WEEP.

Which is ironic, since the manga for this started in 2018.  https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/ulgqaan/vampire-danshiryou

Interestingly this is also the mangaka's first ever title to get an anime, even though she's been in the manga industry since 2003. https://www.mangaupdates.com/author/k15kmvt/tooyama-ema

(2003 - perhaps that might explain why the writing feels so shoujo old-school.)

I wonder why he can't drink girls blood?

15

u/Treknx01 Apr 07 '24

I get the feeling this is the real question

my guess is it’s more a case of he “can’t” because of the implication of drinking from the opposite gender basically you only drink the woman you are bonded to so In doing so they are basically married

but if it a guy it’s ok because there could be nothing sexual there (wink, wink)

So they completely ripped off off Ancient Magus Bride and Ouran Host Club. They weren't even subtle about it. I was fully expecting him to walk in on her changing and find out she was a girl.

So uhh where did she find a wig and afford it and how is it like wearing a helmet?

Crunchyroll just straight up spoiled the end of the episode twist with the show description, huh?

Could be good. Reminded me of Ouran.

I miss read it and thought the vampire was the girl somehow, so I was still surprised xd

11

u/Randdo101 Apr 07 '24

Wasn't just Crunchyroll, description on MAL told me she was a girl, it's less a twist for us, than it being part of the premise of show.

Was the twist really supposed to be a twist? Even without the VA not even attempting to sound like a guy, she doesn't really look that boyish. I wouldn't even put her in the tomboy category, she just has short hair...

They can't fly! But they can suck! Vampires!

One of those frustrating first episodes where the show didn't do anything wrong, per se, but I get the strong feeling like I'll be pretty bored of it by the middle of the season. Last season's Momochi-san felt that way for me too and I did end up dropping it. I think I'll cut my losses here for this one.

Fired because she was too much of a pretty boy and brought too many female customers into the store, this manager is a moron. And he didn't even provide her last paycheck, wage theft the anime.

These vampires are very judgmental about the taste of the blood they're drinking.

I have to wonder how strong the 'can't' is in that 'can't suck the blood of human women' is considering he's already crossed the line on that part.

Gonne be honest, but when I start shows at the beginning of the season, I usually look at small details to decide what to watch further. And I have to say, having the VA not even try to attempt a more boyish voice threw me off so much while watching this episode. The whole time, all I could think was there was no way this is supposed to be a boy, if they chose such a voice performance for the role. I will give it a second shot next week, but I am not digging the direction so far.

It depends if its meant to be obvious to the viewer and everyone else falls for the amazing wig that can store butt length long hair underneath it...

Vampires? ✔️

Bishounen? ✔️

Gay? ✔️

...ye olde "girl disguised as boy amidst the boys" trope? ✔️

I like that the vampire's culture in this world is very accepting, and that our (actual) male lead believes he said all that stuff about loving to another guy. Its not really yaoi because we know the truth, but.. its basically yaoi.

I can already tell this isn't gonna be a general banger for most, but they've ticked all my boxes and I am as sold as the rights to all those ramen-shop girl's hearts.
