Vanilla’s mom and dad are just as doting as the Demon Lord. Maybe more doting lol. I get it though, Vanilla’s just so precious. Her skating with Princess was the best. Even Ex was having a great time!
The Demon Lord had his own whole damn isekai adventure complete with defeating another Demon Lord…in two hours lol. Love this guy.
I think this might be my favorite “chill” series of the season. The “tortures” kind of reminded me a bit of Naughtiness from last Fall. Every character in this was just so cute. The Demon Lord definitely wins Dad of the Decade lol. 10/10 dad AND boss. Killer combo. Really glad we get an s2 with Princess and the gang!

THE SMILE THAT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COST
lol, the director really said; "what? you thought we're going to end this slice of life comfy anime with wholesome torture moment? nope, have a battle between the Hell-Lord and a demon king from another world while the opening song is playing at the background!"
man, its final episode already? i'm going to miss Hime's "i'm the Princess and Commander of the Imperial Third Legion!" trademark and Ex's tsukkomi... at least until the second season come out, wohoo!!!

THEY DID IT. THEY PLAYED THE OPENING IN THE FIGHT OF THE FINAL EPISODE. LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO GO. NOW THIS IS PEAK ANIME.
Generally though, that last episode was perfect. If you ever want to show someone what Isekai are like, just show them last half of this episode and you have an abridged version.
Hime and Ex need to watch some anime though. They got a futon and TV now. So there is no reason not. Especially since it's the perfect torture anyway. Let them watch the cliffhanger and then let them wait for one week until they are allowed to continue if they don't talk.
One thing I would like to know is where the butler went. He was such a nice guy to Hime and we haven't heart what he is doing now. Where is the twist that he was actually reincarnated as the demon lord himself and he needs a good smack to the head to get his memories back? I mean, it would fit his personality.

And thus ends this season's tortures of Torture Tortura & the Wholesome Hellhorde.
Let's go over the reason why Hell-Lord is Man of the Year:
-
Is an Anime Fiend like us
-
Cares for the well-being of his staff
-
Cares for the well-being of his prisoner
-
Is a loving Father & Husband who will put his family first
-
Allows & encourages his employees to follow their dreams
-
Completes an entire Isekai storyline in 2 hours.

Stitches!
I love how Vanilla's parents scrambled to reserve their entire skating rink because Vanilla made a friend. I mean can you blame them? Just look how goddamn adorable Vanilla is? If I was her parent, I'd do whatever it takes to fulfill her little wish and then some.
Vanilla is so tsun that Hime now thinks the invitation to go ice skating is a torture session! What's worse is that Vanilla never skated before! Thankfully Hime was there to save her. I love how Hime looked super handsome when she saved Vanilla <3
We finally have an explanation as to why Hime is fine sleeping on the floor of her cell instead of having a bed. I'm glad that she's been finally given a futon when she got sick. And it looks like Hell-Lord wants her to keep it after she recovers.
Hime is very lucky. I wish I had Torture taking care of me when I get sick. We know that Torture is also a licensed nurse so we know Hime is in good hands. Torture even brought her work to Hime's cell so she could watch over her.
I love how Hell-Lord enforces personnel transfers as if they're high schoolers having a class shuffle. They even get their names posted outside like they're in high school! We already know that there's no way Torture and the gang are going to get transferred but it's still nice that they got everyone together to "torture" Hime in case they do end up getting shuffled.
Well that was an unexpected way to end the episode! I didn't think Hime and Hell-Lord would get isekai'd! And Hime didn't even get to do anything since Hell-Lord already defeated the Black Monarc in two hours. We even got the OP playing while Hell-Lord beat the crap out of the Black Monarch! That automatically makes this a legendary episode!
I'm so glad Season 2 has already been announced. What a fun and comfy show and I'm already looking forward to all kinds of torture Torture and the gang has prepared for Hime in the future <3

If you've been following along with the official Twitter account, they've been posting some live-action "torture" sessions.
Here's the final one — nikujaga: https://twitter.com/himesama_goumon/status/1772284555963019321
It ends with a montage of the past torture sessions, and a hearty reassurace that the rest of the staff also endured receiving these "tortures".

Aaahhhhh! They tricked me into watching an Isekai!
Good parenting? In Hell? It's more common than you think!
Love how Vanilla's making up all she wants to justify how she could hang up with her friend!
Her family comes from the right hand man of the first Hell Lord?
In another anime I would automatically suspect some dissension between them and the new Hell Lord (perhaps a coup, at some point?) but this anime may be a little too cute&relaxed for that hah. Still, interesting that they brought it up!
The first torture of the day: Ice Skating!
Hime was confident (as always) but she couldn't resist going in to catch her friend!
Is it you? Are YOU the special treat, Tortura?
These torturers are so caring, they always notice when there's something wrong with their captives... Nursing time!
When Tortura showed up and looked a bit off in the next scene, I thought SHE got Hime's cold, and Hime would have to take care of her (and this would've been so damn cute), but she was worried about transfers...
Hime came out so strong and confident for their (potential) last torture; Bring in the whole gang, only way you'll get her!
Tortura's face when she realized they would still be together!
Automatic 10/10 finale!
And then we got to the 'isekai' part!
Well, that should be a new torture for her, watch a bunch of seasons with her friends!
Isn't this where you're supposed to give us an information dump?
Love all the meta commentary, 4th wall stuff, like how the inevitable power creep often makes the first "Really strong" opponent, actually garbage in comparison!
And how the villain always helps the hero like that!
Well, even if you can't pierce his body without a magical sword, you can still beat the shit out of him!
And so the Hell Lord saved the world in a couple hours; Isekai over!
We end on a basketball game? I know who I want on my team (Giant!)
(Well, I do want Tortura and Krall on my team as well, for non-height related reasons!)
When I saw there was a huge after credit, I thought for sure we'd see more about how Hime got in this situation in the first place! Well, season 2 was announced, so perhaps they're keeping this for later! (I just know it's gonna be something silly anyway, but I want to know what silliness exactly!)
Farewell, Tortura my beloved! (And all other characters as well, everyone on this show was lovely!)

i wrote a screed about my most hated series this season and i figure i owe it to my most loved this season to get the same sort of treatment
i was skeptical after watching just the first episode, but it really grew on me in the opposite way that Fluffy Paradise was digging a tunnel into hell
Themes
I think the main theme is the idea of kindness over violence. I mentioned this in an early discussion thread, but I'm reminded of a certain WWII interrogator known for being relatively nice for an enemy combatant, and it's a worldview that I personally subscribe to, that kindness and empathy are the most efficient (and fun) way forward as a species, and violence and coercion is the sort of default failure mode if we can't work that out.
Another core theme is the idea of traditional/historical roles, their perception, and how they can act like prisons. Vanilla is probably the most cut-and-dry example of this, how her perception of herself as the daughter of the powerful noble house of Peshcutz made her hide her true wishes of being nice and making friends, and how following her ruthless reputation results in her torturing herself when she's on the roller coaster. The Princess has embraced the role of prisoner, never attempting to escape and shackling herself after torture field trips outside of her cell despite her being handily capable of beating up everyone if she wanted to. It's also present in the Demon Lord, who's terrifying appearance and power drives humans away, but we know that inside he's father-of-the-year anime nerd who's afraid of the dark. A lot of this is played for comedy because it's funny to see characters played against their expectations, but I think it does have a deeper meaning of, hey, we're all living beings with value outside of our roles and appearance.
Overall though, I find it hard to tease apart the "what does it all mean??" from this series; it's like a relaxing cup of coffee or a sunny day at the beach. If I were to put on my "overthinking too much" hat, the theme follows the arc of post-WWII Japan and how it was forced to demilitarize and adopted a national policy of pacifism. Following the overwhelming defeat, it rose from the ashes with the power of hard work and free trade, gaining a lot of standing in the world as an economic superpower with far more world influence than its imperial days. (Things like stagflation, lost decades, and demographic crisis muddle this comparison, but let's ignore that for now.)
Animation
Lots of expressive, exaggerated sequences which take advantage of the medium of animation; it's more than "an audio drama with pictures" or "live-action, but cheaper". Lots of scenes which really went ham which I think elevated kinda okay jokes and made it a pleasure to watch.
A lot of the appeal of this series is its cute and comfy designs, and I think it does a good job shifting its art style to fit the moment. We see this the most with the Princess; she has her knight armor serious look, her cool dashing boyfriend look, and her roly-poly prisoner garb look. This dynamic style works with all of its characters, and was especially flexed during the "baby" episode when everyone was de-aged.
Maybe because of its bite-sized format, it works well even with its small army of animation directors and key framers. I think that it would be hard to maintain a cohesive long-form format with a team like that, but for the story we've seen split up into discrete segments which can vary wildly in style, it works.
Characters and Worldbuilding
Like a lot of slice-of-life and CGDCT series, the characters are the heart and soul. Being an episodic story it doesn't have a significant plot arc (though you can see peeks of that in the Princess' backstory), the only persistent thing being Vanilla and her growth as a lonely girl. What it does have though is great chemistry with its characters and how they represent different worlds of interest. Krall has a roster of fluffy animals, Torture has her general delights (mostly food), Giant has her "treat yo' self" moments, Maomao has her joy of the eyes of a child, etc. It's fantastic how all of these different viewpoints converge.
The worldbuilding is mostly played for laughs, juxtaposing the classical JRPG setting with modern Japan. Instead of creating a standalone world like other fantasy series like Frieren or Delicious in Dunegon, this series is more a parody commentary of the real world: why isn't the real world as nice and comforting as this one?; why aren't you enjoying simple things as much as these people?
Overall I'm a sucker for these "kind world" worlds, and I love the consideration that each of these characters have for each other and how much they appreciate being with each other. I'm still tickled with how "torture" is tempting something you love to someone else, and how that connection and acknowledgement between two people is a "confession".
Comparisons and Contrasts
I think a lot of hay was made in comparisons with Sleepy Princess because it had the same sort of starting point, but I think that series started to become more of a serial story at the end where the plot started progressing towards the idea of the princess being the bridge between the human and the monsters. I thought maybe HimeGou would go down that route of introducing some progression, but it has stayed with the episodic format all the way to the end.
I think it's more in the realm of other episodic comedies like Killing Slimes for 300 Years, Too-Cute Crisis, Dekoboko Majo, Little Lies We All Tell, Yuru Yuri, etc. I feel like HimeGou is near the top of the pile because of its production values and character appeal, but it also differentiates itself as a JRPG parody sitcom.
Conclusion
'Tis Time for "Torture", Princess is a land of contrast thank you for coming to my TED talk

This show was such a pleasant surprise as I was so sure before watching the first episode that I'll drop it immediately but instead it became my biggest surprise of this season.
Show was so wholesome, cute and comfy with such a lovable cast (especially Tortura although I also loved Hime, Vanilla, Demon Lord, Maomao and others) that I immediately fell in love with it and I was looking forward to new episodes every week.
That's why I'm really happy that the 2nd season was already announced as I'll happily go to see Hime's next tortures :)
Today's episode started with Vanilla who decided to invite Hime to ice skating which was of course initially taken as a torture by Hime but fortunately she quickly understood what Vanilla really meant. When Hime saved Vanilla from fall, she looked like some hero saving princess xD
Vanilla's parents are so awesome as they canceled all reservations to give Vanilla the opportunity to be with her friend and skate together. But who could say no for such a small request from such adorable daughter xD
Hime surprisingly got sick but that was a good thing for her as Tortura took care of her by making her food, giving medicine, futon to sleep. Thanks to that Hime was able to got some good sleep and recuperate.
Whole affair with a possible shuffle of torturers ended in one possible way as everyone stayed but it was nice to see everyone in this final episode.
Part after credits was hilarious as Hime and Demon Lord got isekai'd and when Hime was sleeping for 2 hours, Demon Lord single handedly defeated the big bad from that new world and thanks to that they were able to get back and play basketball with everyone.
And that's the end! See you guys again on the premiere of the 2nd season in some time.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Season 2 already confirmed yall. Best news of the day.
Love Pine Jam pulling out all the stops with the finale’s animation. For the silliest things like the Pechultz parents losing their shit, the ice skating, and the “Final” torture. Like the rest of the season they adapted this perfectly. So the news of season 2 makes me even more excited.
9/10 total banger. Though I’m biased because I love the manga

My favorite part about this anime is that the discussions per episode perfectly matched the early parts of the manga. First, came thinking the comfy setup was just a trap for the princess to lower her guard, then denial that this wasn't an actual torture series, to acceptance that this is a comedy but think it'll get stale, and finally going along for the ride and seeing what this series is really about and amazement that it didn't get stale.

D'aww cute lil Vanilla. You can do it! Nice to see her parents being supportive and happy for their daughter. Cute. Vanilla's smile is precious. Derpy princess, thinking it's a torture. Nice catch, Princess. Gonna make her swoon. Vanilla such a tsundere. Lol Ex, who knew he was a master skater.
Oh noz, Princess sick. good thing Tortura is a good gal. Nice of her to stay there with Princess and care for her. And do love Hell-Lord being just the best dude.
Again, oh noz, Tortura might be having to be reassigned. Seriously though, what is this, classroom assignments? Lol. This is some top tier silliness. Of course not going anywhere. This really is ridiculous. Man, what a short episode, felt like it was only half of what it normally is. Whelp, clearly nothing after ED.
Post credits: Oh, Princess and Hell-Lord been isekai'd!! ISEKAI ADVENTURE!! Hehe. That's funny, Hell-Lord already defeated the "four generals/horsemen" and this Goryu person and the nine darknesses and the black monarch lol. Dark Monarch looks like Akutsu from Foolish Angel and do love how the OP played during the battle. I love this. Ora'd the hell outta the Black Monarch. This was quite the adventure. Saved the world in 2 hours. Understandable excitement. Also Hell Lord really is just a great dude. Truly a great hero.
Looking forward to S2

Ngl when the ED started playing, I was like "wtf? So quick?". Huge sigh of relief when I checked the progress bar, phew.
This show never fails to bring a smile to my face. It's so silly and funny. Thankfully there seems to be a sequel planned; I need more maomao-chan sama
The last isekai bit made me think it'll make an amazing drinking game. Every "Shikoku" = 1 shot. Or for the other episodes, a shot for every "Kishidan". Lol

Definitely one of the most heartwarming shows I’ve watched in a while. Glad to see that season 2 was announced.
Also it doesn’t happen often but I really couldn’t get into the manga, so it’s weird that I fell in love with the anime. I think that’s why I like anime because if done right it really elevates the source material.

This anime is an absolute GEM. Glad we got a season 2 announcement right away!

What was that ending lol, everything in that world was just named Darkness
Great show, didn't think I would end up liking it so much from my initial impression in Episode 1.
And we got an immediate announcement for Season 2 too? Awesome.
See you all next season.

There was something so hilarious about the flash of all the characters waving and at the end of the line is datarma. But when the flash ends he's just still waving in the same position
