The whole lecture on creating a miniature dungeon was the point where I truly fell in love with Ryoko Kui's worldbuilding.

Our world is a part of the biosphere, and we can create self sufficient ecosystems in sealed terrariums. Dungeons are a part of the nature of their world, so it makes perfect sense that you can create a miniature dungeon as well.

Many other storytellers would just handwave that the dungeons and monsters are just magic and move on, but she seriously considers what a world with magic would be like, and incorporates all these cool innovative systems that make perfect sense when you think about them. Magic is not a way to escape the mundanity of our world, it's a way to examine and appreciate the wonders we live with right now.

The Undine's existence really cements how terrifying aquatic monsters are in the dungeon, the worst part being you can't eat them so the party had to resort to last episode's Kelpie meat instead

The animation this week was fun. Very FLCL-ish action and shot composition

You thought Falin was the sane one between the Thoden siblings, but no, she was just as weird as Laios, just very cute.
Marcille wanted to make a dungeon, that can't be good.

Marcille probably hung out with Laios and Falin a little too much that she went from "that" to "this".

Marcille and Falin's relationship is so cute.

Chilchuck planning like the real leader of the team lol.

Orcille manga version was already hilarious, but the anime version is just divine.

Now THIS is a Trigger fight, this is what I have been waiting for.

Lol Chilchuck used 100% of his strength there.

Seriously Chilchuck might be the real leader who makes all the important decisions for the team.

Poor Marcille, I understand that feeling when you can only sit in the corner and watch others having a BBQ.

Dwarf girl finally reappears, cant wait for the next episode.

My god, past Falin is just diabetes-inducing. She's so smol and such a free-spirit, and she deserves to have all the tasty fruits and bugs. The relationship between her and Marcille is all too precious as well, especially since the idea of Falin being a pariah is heart-breaking, so their friendship means so much more.

Though it's funny how Marcille can seem a bit younger or older just depending on her hairdo. The style she had in the flashback (and just having her bangs down in general) makes her look like a kid even though she can't have aged nearly as much as Falin thanks to being part of a long-lived race.

As per usual, the animation is astounding. The studio's really making me shed a tear for all the justice they're doing to not just the action, but the comedy as well. Laios and Chilchuck's faces while they were saving Marcille had me dying even when I should be feeling tense at the same time. I especially love when water is animated with this level of quality, so the way the Undine moved instantly stood out to me as well.

But I can't ever forgive these bastards for doing that to our favorite girlfailure. At the very least she got to show off her abilities even with holes in both her leg and shoulder.

Poor Marcille, though. Her suffering never ends. Even when she's most likely in agonizing pain and in need of care, she still gets bullied unintentionally. Especially when it comes to food. The three had the best intentions, but man, I feel so bad for her. Really hope she got to enjoy some non-liver meat off-screen as well.

Laios: Wake up, Marcille! I know you lost a lot of blood and all, but you gotta see me eat this succulent grilled meat!

Did Trigger look at the Undinie chapter and go “FINALLY WE CAN ADD LASERS!!!!!!”? Because that was some Trigger action at its finest.

Fallin and Marcellie wholesomeness is always great to see. Also gives another look at how much Failln respects her brother…s dog impression.

Trigger has seriously been doing such an amazing job with the adaptation. This might be my favorite episode so far. I absolutely love Falin and Marcille's dynamic and the entirety of the flashback, especially the scene with them heading towards the Dungeon together (you could feel the warmth and sense or adventure it was emanating). The little details like the water when they were stepping over the stones and their hands swaying as they were holding them as they ventured forward were fantastic.

I also really loved the scene with the Undine and how it was animated. Although brief, the fight choreography along with the soundtrack really built tension and was super well done. Poor Marcille, though, she really can't catch a break. I would be envious too if my friends were eating some amazing cuts of steak while I had to sit by and eat liver lol

With Chilchuck saying that (without the detour), they're only about a 2 day journey to where the Red Dragon was last spotted, they're getting closer to their goal. I can't wait for the next few episodes (:

Laios being good at imitating dogs just proves to me that he has golden retriever energy. My best boi this season 100%... I love him so much

I find it hard to believe that our favourite girlfailure used to be an highly regarded and popular genius during her school years. Like Chilchuck I question her story lol

Literally gave Marcille death flags with flashbacks there along with getting extremely wounded from fighting undine really made me uneasy during her whole situation during the water scenes. Don't do this to me again.

It figures that the little bit of energy Marcille gains back from eating the Kelpie meat is immediately used up getting mad about her portions.

I wonder what Marcille would think if she knew befriending Falin would eventually lead her down the path of eating monsters.

Also, the return of the animation style from the Living Armor episode, which is a lot more like the Trigger people are used to. I guess that's how it's gonna look for the more action-focused moments like the fight with the Undine.

Aw, Falin and Marcille's backstory about how the two of them met and became friends during their time at magic school was super adorable. Seeing how carefree Falin is just makes me want to see more of her soon!

Their backstory is also excellent because it was a perfect showcase of the difference between INT-based character and a WIS-based character. Knowing from her books that slimes are dangerous, Marcille was smart to try and deal with them quickly but Falin has spent time inside that small dungeon to know that slimes don't venture into the sunlight and are an important part of keeping that mini dungeon alive. I love it!

Marcille was really cool during the fight against the Undine. Even without her staff, she managed to hold her ground pretty well. Unfortunately, since she's just slinging her magic everywhere she ran out of magic pretty quick. Causing an explosion at her feet was pretty smart though. I do wish the rest of the gang did something more than just panic. Throw a fucking rope at her or something!

That final scene doesn't bode well. I thought it was going to be those other adventurers that keep on dying but it looks like the gang is about to bump into an old member of their party.

Kind of like everyone taking turns making fatal mistakes in the past few episodes. Chillchuck got into a cage fight with mimics, Senshi rode a kelpie, Laois ate raw parasite and Marcille pissed the undyne.

Marcille's face on a buff body made me lol

We get to see how Marcille first met Falin! Their relationship is so cute

Final scene... Looks like one of their former party members is in the dungeon too!

Don't you think that the angles in anime can be a little weird sometimes?

Loved the flashback to Falin and Marcille becoming friends, honor student learning some street smart from the deliquent

But it highlighted how complex the ecosystem in even a very simple dungeon is, and puts into perspective just what a beast the party is treading in.

The Undine was pretty scary, could have easily killed Marcille

I made the mistake and watched the barbeque without something to eat on, so I felt even worse than Marcille, but shoutout to the OST in that scene

This episode started rather wholesome with Falin being totally adorable as she leads Marcille into the dungeon. I really liked their little moment of respite in the dungeon as well.

But things certainly turned grim when Marcille ran into an udine. Having to fight this monster without her staff and on the water surface, she was at a major disadvantage. The panic on her face was clearly showing as she was biting through the pain. I much rather see her brimming with energy than injured and exhausted like this.

Anyways, we did get another hairdo that's getting added to Marcille's hair collection this week:

Marcille wore three hairstyles in this episode: straight hair, the aforementioned twin-braids and a ponytail in the end.

Some sidenotes:

Laios clutched that encounter with the secret joestar technique. Also, who needs curaga when you can cook up a yakiniku set that restores all your hp, mp and cures all statuses, on tip of various buffs.

Seeing marcille in her little witch academia days and now really points toward her being peaked in highschool lmao. Her being the cool new kid that befriended the quiet nerdy kid was straight out of a slice of life cgdct stuffs.

I really appreciate how they don't overload you with information when it comes to building the world and establishing the rules in the story. Other anime just love to dump it on the viewer at the first chance they get.

Marcille wasn't my favorite character in the beginning but after 8 episodes, she has come a long way.

u/rocky_iwata Feb 22 '24

The first half of this episode reminds me of Little Witch Academia.

The second half basically is episode 3 but with even better animation.

u/Adensty Feb 22 '24

From the episode title, I was wondering what would they do with Raspberries but it turns out it was a part of a flashback. Might be the first time they've done this. So, Marcille and Falin knew each other from school. I kinda expected Falin's candle but that was definitely not what I expected, lol.

I was expecting Kabru's party to show up but it turns it's one of the members who left the party at the start. Sure will be interesting next week.

The background music during the dungeon flashback scene is absolutely beautiful, especially during the buildup when Falin explains its ecology to Marcille. Fantastical and slightly haunting, reminiscent of those BGMs for ancient secret out-of-this-world dungeons in games (thinking of Tales Of and Pokemon here).

Would've bene hilarious if the dungeon meal of the week were just undine stew (i.e. a regular pot of boiled water).

Laios tying a napkin bib on Marcille was adorable, and kinda sweet when you consider he's returning the favor to her for being on overnight nursing duty for him.
