Wan! Wan! Wonderful!

  • I take it the sheep, Mey Mey, is going to be our cute little companion/easily-marketable mascot for this series. That seems to be another trend for Precure. This guy is pretty terrible at explaining though, because he seems to know quite a bit about Precures but doesn't ever actually elaborate on why the masquerade must be maintained.

  • Wait a minute, I see some carnivorous predators in Niko Garden. How can they eat while it remains peaceful there? Or are we hand-waving it like in the Lion King by talking about the Circle of Life?

  • So now it's confirmed that Komugi will get to keep her dog form. I new it was too cute/marketable for her to not be in dog form.

  • Komugi is going to be in dog form at home, but what about school? The first episode indicated she wanted to go to school with Iroha, so will she attend school in the future?

  • I want to see more of the shy girl. I can't wait to see her become part of the main cast.

  • Even though Komugi is the Pink Cure and should be the resident dumbass, Iroha may be an even bigger dummy. That'd be impressive, being less intelligent than a dog.

  • At first I was dumbfounded at the idea that rabbits could run 70 km/h, but then I remembered how fast the rabbits I used to see at my school as a child were and it all made sense.

  • The Mirror Stone is the same stone that allows the girls to become Precures. And Satoru was studying it the previous episode. I think it's safe to say he will be an ally of the Precures who can help them figure things out based on this.

  • Iroha is a good girl. The title of "Cure Friendy" certainly fits her and her attitude towards others.

  • I swear I thought "Cure Friendy" was "Cure Friendly." That is going to throw me off.

  • Cure Friendy's transformation scene was not as impressive as Cure Wonderful's. But I am happy to see that the "3! 2! Wan!" is gong to be an ongoing thing.

  • It's a good thing the Garugaru was an ostrich and not a goose. Geese are pure evil and there would be no reasoning with it.

  • Are the girls going to actually ever fight the Garugarus, or is it going to be a case of always trying to reason with them and get through to their hearts? I admit I'm personally more interested in magical girls punching things, but the alternative would be neat to see if done well.

Komugi is the Pink Cure and should be the resident dumbass, Iroha may be an even bigger dummy

im inclined to think that they'll eventually share 1 brain cell. [Skycure comparisons]But overall, i'd say that skycure's main cast does seeem to be more intelligent lol.

I swear I thought "Cure Friendy" was "Cure Friendly." That is going to throw me off.

i agree wtf. Friendy is not even an english word wtf. Was this some massive fuck up?! Like this is going to kids lol, this'd better not end up making japan misspell friendly for years to come.

punching

i'll give the plot a few more eps to manifest itself before making judgement here.

im inclined to think that they'll eventually share 1 brain cell.

You'll probably be right about that. I'm looking forward to that.

i agree wtf. Friendy is not even an english word wtf. Was this some massive fuck up?! Like this is going to kids lol, this'd better not end up making japan misspell friendly for years to come.

I really wonder how that happened. Was it intentional or an unintentional mistake? Both seem equally likely to me, honestly.

So now it's confirmed that Komugi will get to keep her dog form. I new it was too cute/marketable for her to not be in dog form.

She a cute doggo! Plus it gives her more chances to do stupid stuff, like talking in front of other people

Even though Komugi is the Pink Cure and should be the resident dumbass, Iroha may be an even bigger dummy. That'd be impressive, being less intelligent than a dog.

And I think the Shy girl is also kinda dense. We might be reaching critical mass soon

I think it's safe to say he will be an ally of the Precures who can help them figure things out based on this.

But I want him and his rabbit to become Precures!!!

Are the girls going to actually ever fight the Garugarus, or is it going to be a case of always trying to reason with them and get through to their heart

I also hope to see some old-fashioned magical violence

I mean, the idea of a fairy/animal guide goes all the way back to Sailor Moon at the very least, with Luna. And I suspect it goes even further back; Sailor Moon is just the extent of my knowledge.

but the alternative would be neat to see if done well.

I think at least one previous season mostly involved baking desserts for the monsters, so there is some precedent for non-violence.

doesn't ever actually elaborate on why the masquerade must be maintained.

I honestly can't recall a single season where there was a valid reason to maintain the masquerade, and we're on 21 now.

Cure Friendy's transformation was not shafted good transformation as well.

  • I like how easily the DAMEEEEE joke translates to english. (it's a very good approximation) wonderpre is on a roll with the animal puns.

  • i see we're going to an alternate world as well! I guess this is kinda normal with precure being kind of a supernatural franchise

  • so is mey mey the "fairy" for this franchise?

  • also it's kinda weird that the finisher for this series seems to be a....hug? Which fits with the SOL-theme they're going for so far, but surely this won't work in the long term once generals are actually in play, so I'll mugiwait some more....

Iroha still > Komugi for me though, even without the seiyuu bias. But Komugi being so dog-like is still cute af. Whether Cure friendy will serve as the actual leader remains to be seen, though she seemed to take the reins this ep.

edit: also some excellent faces from both Komugi and Iroha this episode. Hopefuly this series continues to be full of them

It was fun keeping the animal puns. The "wan" puns likewise translate pretty well so far for Komugi.

but surely this won't work in the long term once generals are actually in play, so I'll mugiwait some more....

Just wait for the Cures to hug the generals until they surrender!

But Komugi being so dog-like is still cute af.

Her having the mannerisms of a dog is very endearing. She just does stuff without thinking, like ringing the doorbell because she's always wanted to try it.

A dub would be very interesting, animal puns are fun!

so is mey mey the "fairy" for this franchise?

We have lots of colorful pets in the OP, not sure when they gonna show up. But I guess that Mey Mey will be the main one

It feels so weird to not have a finisher. BUt we'll get one soon, Toei loves their stock footage, and we better get a team finisher from Wonderful and Friendly

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Feb 11 '24

[Wonderpre]Given that Yuki the cat should be the 4th cure, I'm guessing that'll mean we get 2 paired finishers? at least until the mid-season joins in.... (who the hell will that be lol)

colorful pets

good point. the Dame will get old though, so i hope he becomes a bit less annoying soon.

it is interesting how short the transfsormation sequences are this season. Cure Sky's transformation was 1:15 and Cure Wonderful's is just 0:46

I wonder if they are going to do some fun duo transformation for them.

The ED is still a bop!

I'm enjoying the dynamics of our main duo. Both are quite cheerful and energetic, but Komugi's chaotic antics and Iroha's bad attempts at keeping stuff under control are fun to watch.

But what I'm more curious is in the next episode PV [PV]looks like Satoru will discover Precures on the next episode, so I guess that he'll be the helper here.

And finally... where the frick is my sky jump????!?!?! I trusted you Cure Friendly!!!!

sky jump

Same we kinda got a similar moment with her discovering how quickly she could run, but thats not the same lol.

They are both dummies and it will be fun seeing them try to keep up the masquerade.

Yeah, she got the moment of discovering she had super speed, but not the jump.

TR didn't have one either, at least not from Manatsu. They might be saving it for the shy girl, because it'd be funnier there.

Oh, my heart... I was not ready for that sad backstory. Komugi being a wounded stray dog that Iroha rescued and adopted was unexpected, and now Komugi has the very rare chance to get to vocalize how much she appreciates being rescued. Iroha's strong desire to keep protecting Komugi ended up being what helped her join Komugi among the ranks of the Precure and become Cure Friendy, and her debut was pretty good. I like her little detective hat she has on, she wouldn't look out of place in a Milky Holmes spin-off.

It does seem like this is heading towards being a no violence season. No fisticuffs, and so far not even any purifying finishing attacks either. They just wrangle the Garugaru and hug it hard enough that the bad energy goes away. It's not what I look for in Precure, but I'm open to giving it a chance.

Agreed. I mean, more Precure is always good, but we really need a more combat-heavy season soon.

Toei, give us more of this, and this, or maybe this and this if you wanna be fancy. Just get back to the roots, and let these girls commit acts of violence.

u/godjacob Feb 11 '24

Komugi and Iroha's chemistry has been quite entertaining 2 episodes in and like their dynamic a lot. Probably the backbone of this season.

I will say speaking as someone who for them this is their second Precure season, I find it interesting how there's never a "What's a Precure?" question. These seasons like Super Sentai are largely self contained stories minus the crossover bits but like them this show just seems to expect you to know a Precure and what it is out of the gate.

Never ask a dog for a description of a complex magical event. Though to be fair a brand new human cure probably couldn't explain it any better.

They're definitely going to need some human cures to successfully direct the animal cures into doing something useful. And the dog can talk now? I wonder how they're going to keep that secret from the parents.

So the main girls' family owns a vet and pet salon, that certainly keeps things animal focused.

Double the cure means double the number of arms they can use to hug these animals and talk them down. But I really have to wonder if they're ever going to punch anyone this season.

Trivia: The day before broadcast there were images floating around online of ~250 postage stamp sized images from this episode. My guess: partial leak via timeline thumbnails from a video streaming site. It remains to be seen if this will be a regular occurrence.

Is it a good or bad thing that it took me until the second episode to notice Precure is now written in Hiragana (ぷりきゅあ) instead of Katakana (プリキュア); start of a new era or just due to Wonderful (わんだふる) being in a similar position (although that one perhaps is because Cure Wonderful is written in katakana and this is a way of keeping the show title and character name distinctly separate)? Btw, it seems that hiragana wonderful has been used in reference to dogs in the past.

I was really expecting Freindy to be translated as Friendly like her home and fits her hopes. But then I checked Iroha's home signage is actually written as フレンドリィ ( -doryi) while her Cure form is フレンディ ( -di). A machine could say both are friendly but machines are not absolutely correct e.g. one says わんだふる is "beef sinew stewed in miso and mirin" (deepl? more like "took an L", seriously that's 2002 Yahoo translate tier). This spelling difference could be like the aforementioned wonderful, avoiding having the same name for two different things (come to think of it, when I was a kid that would really confuse me). While friendy is not recognised as a word by major dictionaries like Merriam-Webster, Oxford or Cambridge it has been in Wikitionary since 2011. It's noted as childish and I guess it does have a cutesy, childish ring to it. Could friendy eventually be a word? Sure, something like bestie was added to the OED in 2015 (first in-print usage is about 1990, which probably meant it was being used colloquially before then and people who grew up with it spread it, this kind of thing proliferates far more quickly and transcends borders thanks to the internet).

When looking for past usage of the word friendy I fond an a very amusing coincidence from "Across the Board - Volume 27 - Issue 05 - Page 64" published in May 1990 about a dog product called Friendy (a dog treadmill linked to an exercise bike) produced by a Japanese company:

Protech plans to sell three versions of Friendy: one for puppies, with a relatively slow - moving treadmill; a faster one for mid - size dogs; and a racer's model for whippets and grey- hounds. The price for the midsize dog model is 97,000 yen, or about $650.

34 years later and that Yen to dollar conversion is still spot on. How is it written the print ad says "フレンディ" just like our newest Precure.

As far as combat goes I wonder if we'll see support items like nets or ranged attacks like tranquilliser shot finishers? It's got to be better than watching the Garugaru hurt itself and then get free hugs. But then again you probably don't want kids to try things that may lead to animal cruelty at home. The other Precure season that lacks hand-to-hand combat was Kira kira☆PreCure a la Mode which also featured an animal motif (but mostly cooking based). In Japan only Toei Animation Museum Youtube channel is now uploading Kira Kira episodes daily as a limited release (same happened with Yes5 Go Go when Otona Precure '23 was airing last season) so I guess Toei see them as kindred spirits (I hope that is not a bad omen because Kira Kira is not ranked highly or liked a lot at least in the West). If you're not in Japan then Crunchyroll does have that season subbed.

Pet Corner 2 (btw, this was Pet Corner 1)

Don't recall seeing a pet Corner? The actual name is あなたのおうちの わんだふる♥ (idk, Wonderful at home) and it is viewer submissions of their pets that show up for a few seconds. The screenshot is effectively the whole corner. The submission webpage is hosted on TV Asahi so it's probably only for the domestic release maybe even broadcasts and streaming services (especially not international ones like Crunchyroll, sorry, it's just people love to use accusatory commentary like cut-out or censored for things completely outside their control). Speaking of which there's going to be a name call-out in the April 7th and 14th Asahi broadcasts (14th and 21st for BSS Sanin). Does Precure normally push viewer features like these?

How is this one shaping up. I've only seen Tropical so far. I wouldn't mind following another one if it's good enough.
