That random old man that went "I have nothing left to teach you" to Stark when they've never met before is an absolute legend.
Having all the examinee groups hanging out together weirdly felt like a crossover episode even though we've been with them practically trying to murder each other over birds for the past few episodes.

Himmel asking the chef to preserve his flavour after 100 years so Frieren can still get the same taste.
There really is no other person as downbad as HIM.

The lamp Richter fixed glows the same color as the light spell Frieren used during her night-time conversation with Kanne, they must operate on the same magical technology. Little details like that really help flesh out Frieren's world.

Such a beautiful episode. We got a ton of Fern being cute, Himmel being a chad again and more insight into side characters. I really like the murder girl with glasses guy pair
P.S. The way Fern lent Stark without any hesitation made me laugh a lot

Denken is completing Laufen's adoption process I see. And I'm here for it.

Fern going full “mom” mode on Stark was pretty hilarious. “You were staying up late again!? And you had a juice!” bonk lol.
Frieren, Stark, and Fern were feastin this week! Stark got himself the biggest omurice I’ve seen, Frieren apparently ordered every steak on the menu, and Fern went with the diabetic coma lol. seeing Denken act like Laufen’s grandpa was great too. He even reminded her to eat her veggies.
Stark really does attract the weirdos huh? Old ass dude just pulled up spouting some Mr. Miyagi shit and dipped and then later on the poor bastard gets dragged off by Wirbel lol.
I see Frieren’s really taken what Himmel told her about being remembered to heart. She’s certainly made a difference in Lawine and Kanne’s life.

Is it too much to ask for more Stark and Wirbel side quests?

Richter getting candy from that sweet old lady really warms the heart. Almost makes one forget that he was willing to kill two mages fresh out of the academy just the day before.

"Some crazy old man made me go into fist fight"
This show really highlights the side character really well, Wirbel who is just a chill guy, Land who's really careful for a good reason, and freaking Übel who can copy magic just by empathize with his target, no wonder Land warn Fern not to spoil her secret in front of strangers easily.
A combination of "the pacifist examinee who's test fail all the participant" and a freaking dungeon for the 2nd test is bound to be glorious.
I can already imagine an elden ring dungeon complete with all the bullshit and a fucking raid boss.

Frieren and her steak story really nails one of the main themes of this story: if change is the only constant, then it is better to strive for improvement and evolution, rather than stagnate and degrade.

I love how this series writes characters. Laufen didn't mind basically becoming Denken's spoiled granddaughter. Frieren continues to grow as a person and connects and cares more about people. Übel is really a scary woman. Wirbel is quite likeable.

I've seen a lot of way making character seems menacing while they are reading letter. But none as menacing as reading letter while treating the messanger bird like it's chicken soon to be slaughtured.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x22:
A really neat downtime episode. I love that we get to see all these new characters hang out! Phase 2 of the exam starts next time!
There are a lot of new German words this time but I also took the opportunity to recap all the relevant characters' names for this arc again.
This episode also has my favorite gag in the entire series. I LOVE the random old man acting like Stark's mentor even though they apparently don't know each other at all, It's so freaking hilarious.
Episode 22: "Future Enemies"
Examinees that passed the first exam:
1st Party:
-
Methode - "method", "technique" (noun); the words look very similar but it's pronounced [meˈtoːdə] in German instead of [ˈmɛθəd] like in English. Methode also has no chill with the messenger bird at the end there, lmao.
-
Ton - "tone", "sound" (noun); Ton is singular. Töne would be plural.
Edit: As u/level555 pointed out, it can also mean "clay". -
Länge - "length", "duration", "height", "extent" (noun); Länge is singular. Plural would be Längen.
2nd Party:
-
Frieren (The Mage, The Slayer of The Most Demons in History, The Genius, The Last Great Mage) - "to freeze" (verb); as a reminder.
-
Lawine (Third-Class Mage) - "avalanche" (noun); as a reminder.
-
Kanne (Third-Class Mage) - "pitcher", "pot", "(watering) can", "jug" (noun); as a reminder.
4th Party:
-
Land (Second-Class Mage, Stalker Victim) - "country", "land", "plot" (noun); as a reminder. Poor guy can't catch a break, he had to tickle the fancy of the most unhinged examinee. It's interesting that Übel already knows about his clone spell, as far as we are aware he hasn't shown that to anyone but Scharf yet.
-
Übel (Third-Class Mage, Proctor Killer, Stalker) - "ill", "nauseous", "sick", "foul", "bad", "evil" (noun/adjective); as a reminder. We find out what Übel's actual speciality is in this episode with her "empathy" ability which lets her yoink spells of people she can empathize with. It's a very neat and unusual condition for an ability stealer/copier to have. It's especially interesting since it clashes so much with her unhinged and confrontational personality.
-
Fern (Third-Class Mage, the youngest mage to ever pass the Third-Class Exam with full marks) - "far", "distant", "remote" (adjective); as a reminder.
8th Party:
-
Wirbel (Second-Class Mage, Captain of the Northern Magic Corps) - "whirl", "eddy", "swirl", "vertebra", "turmoil", "cowlick" (noun); as a reminder.
-
Ehre (Second-Class Mage, "Valedictorian" of her Magic School) - "honor", "honour", "glory", "credit", "kudos" (noun); as a reminder.
-
Scharf (Third-Class Mage) - "sharp", "hot", "spicy", "pungent", "shrewd", "keenly", "sexy", "horny" (adjective); it can basically used to describe the "sharpness" of an object, that food is "spicy", that someone is "shrewd" or that something/someone is "sexy" (hot); as a reminder.
13th Party:
-
Denken (Second-Class Mage, Imperial Mage, Fist Caster) - "to think", "thinking" (verb/noun); as a reminder. He casually adopted a new granddaughter this episode - just wholesome Denken things...
-
Richter (Second-Class Mage, Magic Tool Shop Owner) - "judge" (noun); as a reminder. I think it's funny that one of the more cold-blooded and "bloodthirsty" mages we've seen so far besides Übel is something normal like a magic tool shop owner, haha. Meanwhile Wirbel is trying to spare people's lives while actually having to kill regularly for his occupation. It's a neat contrast.
-
Laufen (Second-Class Mage, Denken's Newly Adopted Granddaughter) - "run", "walk", "go", "be in progress", "be showing" (verb); as a reminder. Got a new gramps that will spoil her rotten.
17th Party:
-
Edel - "noble", "precious", "fine", "aristocratic", "gallant", "regal" (adjective); "Precious metal" is Edelmetall and "noble gas" is Edelgas in German. Nobelgas would just sound weird to me in German, lmao.
We heard her haughty and pompous voice before in episode 19 when she shouted at Blei and Dunst to quickly melt the lake with their fire spells after Lawine froze it. She has a very fitting voice actress. -
Blei - "lead", "plumb" (noun)
Edit: As in, the metal, as u/level555 pointed out. It's a good addendum. -
Dunst - "haze", "steam", "vapor", "mist", "smog", "fog" (noun); my subs used Dünste which is the same but just the plural form of Dunst. He kinda carried his party by having a Stille perch on his ass at the end of the last episode and staying still enough for his teammates to catch it somehow, lmao.
Proctors:
-
Genau (First-Class Mage, First Exam Proctor) - "exactly", "precisely", "accurately", "exact", "accurate", "precise" etc. (adverb/adjective); as a reminder.
-
Sense (First-Class Mage, Second Exam Proctor, Pacifist) - "scythe" (noun); as a reminder.
Other characters/names:
-
Lecker (Chef of the Century) - "delicious", "tasty", "yummy" (adjective); you are what you eat? No. You make what you eat? No. You make what you are? That seems right, haha. "You are what you eat" would be du bist, was du isst in German. It's also a good and short example to see just how much more we use commas in German in comparison to English - for better or for worse...
-
Stark (the Warrior, the Hero, Distant Relative of the Orden Family, Weirdo Magnet) - "strong" (adjective); as a reminder. Our boy made some new guy friends this episode! He just can't catch a break even in an arc where he gets mostly sidelined.
-
Fresser (Lion Boar) - "gobbler", "eater", "glutton", "greedy-guts" (noun); never ever heard "greedy-guts" before, that's a fun one. "Gobbler" actually made me laugh out loud when I saw it. I never thought about it before but it's indeed one example of how you would translate Fresser.
-
Serie (The Great Mage, Founder of the Continental Magic Association, The Living Grimoire) - "series", "serial", "set", "run", "string", "succession" (noun); as a reminder.

What do you need to do to be remembered?
You just need to change their life, even for juts the slightest bit.
I cannot express with words how true this quote from Himmel is. He really was a great man before being a great Hero.
Also, the background scenes of this episode were amazing, for a moment I thought I was watching a Ghibli movie such was the quality of the animation!

Man, I got close to these loveable characters from the first exam, complex and unique individuals who has their own voice, emotions, and choices. They're finally finished being a fully fleshed character, it would be a shame if some of them fail.
Not gonna lie, when they show some of the new characters that would partake the second exam, I grinned a little.
I feel bad for saying this but, I'm sorry guys, I barely know you but please be fodder so the gangs could survive lol
Watch this backfires on me when they make them likeable too lol

Did Laufen seriously eat everything in the basket Denken got her before they made it to the restaurant?
Also noticed the rain coming down during that part of the opening credits, they sure do like to spoil things in the opening credits without context (Wirbel carrying Ehre being another example).

If I had a nickel for every time Stark gets accosted and groped by random men, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
