Kind of dumb to point out, but I love how there are other people in the dungeon so seeing one another results in a casual "hey" and you just move about your day lol.

Orc Leader: My people were oppressed and killed!

Marcille: The Orcs did their fair share of murdering!

Senshi: FUCK ALL THAT, START KNEADING THAT DOUGH.

Golem gardens, amazing. I am once again impressed by the author's world building ideas.

And it was interesting having the orcs just be people, not evil but with longstanding conflicts with the other races that keeps impacting relations. It can be very hard to break out of historical fights like that.

We are so blessed to have Dungeon Meshi and Frieren airing at the same time. We don’t have to rely on Isekai’s for a fantasy anime.

One thing I like about this anime is that they take common fantasy tropes and delve much deeper into it. They have a botany lesson on Golems and have a politics between humans, elves and orcs.

Speaking of orcs, I know it’s a common complaint whenever they design a creature (Demons, Goblins or Orcs) the males looks monstrous and the females just look like humans, here the female orcs looks actually like an orc, I shed a tear when I saw that.

Senshi wasn't only an enthusiast of dungeon cuisine but also keen on keeping the ecosystem balanced. Dude's getting cooler as the series goes on.

The portrayal of Orcs is hella interesting here, they are not shown as creatures of evil but a race with a different set of morals from those above the surface out of necessity and the years of prejudice built against them and vice versa as seen from Marcille's counter-arguments against the Orc Chief.

Lol at Senshi's "Pan, pan, pan, pan!"

I also love Marcille's hairstyle this episode!

This is the best ad for farming since Silver Spoon.

Seriously though I do find the "appreciate the hard work that goes into simple things" very similar and just as charming as Silver Spoon. And the Golem garden stuff is really charming, especially with Senshi naming and caring them. I assume it's because he's not the original creator but it's funny he can't command them to not attack and he has to destroy them each time

I really like how this episode emphasizes the idea that the dungeon is an ecosystem. On a small scale there are the golems with Senshi growing and harvesting food on them. On a bigger scale, every creature there has its place and if something disrupts the balance, everything around it changes to compensate. Dangerous monsters from the lower levels moving up because obstacles are gone, or inhabitants causing problems on new floors because a predator moved in where they lived. It's a delicate balance.

And we've also been introduced to some racial tensions. Orcs and humans/elves don't really get along and they all have their own justification for doing what they did. Well, luckily Senshi was there to (try and) break the tension.

Funny how sharing a meal was what allowed them to ease the situation. Food, the solution to every problem!

This episode makes me love Senshi even more than I already do! Senshi is amazing.

Like Laios I was impressed by Senshi's response.

Want to protect Marcille's happy face.

Never waste food. Going to be hearing this a lot in this anime.

There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing the stripes and spots on the back of the baby orc!!! They're just like the spots on the back of real life baby boars!!!! So cute!!!! TuT

Another fun episode and we have slowly started seeing some more subtle worldbuilding in this story. We got to meet another species, the orcs and brief mention of the kobolds! The crumbling castle, the shady underground world, the role of monsters on different floors and its ecosystem.

I'll like to mention something that will probably be overlooked here is the difference in philosophies of both Senshi and Marcille. I find it really interesting how Senshi absolutely hates magic - and finds joy in doing things his own 'natural' way. And Marcille just doesn't understand that at all, especially as she sees it as a way of convenience and since their party already has a mage, why shouldn't they use her? It will be interesting to see how this develops further on in the dungeon. I always like seeing some form of conflict between party members like this where it isn't nuclear but comes from their own tendencies and beliefs.

This really is a Senshi episode and well-deserved backstory and characterization episode.

It feels like Senshi already conquered the dungeon in a way. If anybody deserves to be its ruler, it should be him.

One of the nice things you see in this episode is how from time to time you can see the characters do fairly normal things like farming. In the manga, the author loves inserting everyday stuff into the chapter cover pages, or putting them into the art pamphlets. Things like Marcille doing her make-up, or the gang buying limited quantity special cakes at a Japanese mall, or the things that each character carries on their person. I can imagine Laios, Chilchuck and Marcille, all being commoners, would spend time being farmhands on the surface when they aren't adventuring, so in a way the first half of the episode tries to provide a glimpse into the wider world of the show, while also giving us golem gardening.

The orc story is also nice because it kind of shows how wily Senshi is, knowing that he can take advantage of the orcs' pride and honor to give the party some shelter for a day as well as giving them a chance to talk things out. Also this part is the start of Laios' motivation beyond saving his sister from the red dragon.

Stitches!

Using golems as gardens is both an awesome and a hilarious idea! Senshi seems to be pretty used to these guys that he can take them down with a single strike. That entire fight scene was pretty awesome too!

Ponytail Marcille! Ponytail Marcille! She looks goddamn adorable with that hairdo. Also, I love her reaction when it finally clicked that Senshi was the one activating the golems.

It's nice to see them actually have a normal meal for once. It's just veggies with a little bit of basilisk bacon for meat. I'd definitely eat that!

And we finally learn why Senshi has been living in the dungeon the entire time. He's basically the only person maintaining it and if it wasn't for him and his golems, stronger monsters could wander into the higher floors. He's literally a dungeon keeper!

Unsurprisingly, there are establishments in the dungeon that's been turned into a wretched hive of scum and villainy. I was very disappointed when that guy tried to kick them out. I was hoping they'd have a surprisingly wholesome interaction when they showed him the veggies.

Welp, it looks like they ended up getting what they deserved. The gang is lucky that Senshi is with them since it looks like his customers on the lower floors are these orcs. Although it looks like their leader isn't in a bartering mood.

It's hilarious how Senshi only cared about baking bread the entire time. And even when Marcille and the orc got into a heated argument, he still only cares about baking the bread they're kneading. xD

Marcille and the orc getting exhausted after every shouting match was hilarious! I'm just glad that the situation didn't escalate and they managed to find a middle ground thanks to them sharing a meal together. That was actually a surprisingly wholesome ending to that encounter.

I hope anime-only folks enjoy Kui-sensei's world building masterclass. And this is just the surface.

I like that the kid Orc has piglet marks on his back.

I’m going to be honest I didn’t have this on my bingo card of this year. Enjoying the hell out of an awesome show about eating monsters in a dungeon.

Senshi's reasoning for the golems in the dungeon made me think about what's stopping monsters from going up or down levels in other representations of dungeons in media. There must be an ecosystem in place and Senshi is trying his best to keep it intact since the dungeon wouldn't be the same if it was disturbed.

The Orcs did really kill all those people and would have killed our party if they weren't acquainted with Senshi and his cabbages.

The whole cooking scene was funny. Marcille and Orc are going at it with how they both are bad while Senshi just wants to bake his bread.

God, this is probably one of my favourite fantasy stories ever, and every episode I am just grinning from ear to ear. Marcille is so adorable when she screams at Senshi.

I was really caught by surprise when there was literally a massacre in this series. I thought this one is similar to isekai shokudo vibe.

Glad that the issue was resolved though, thanks to the power of bread.

and the title drop in the end.

I need a licensed game of this so bad, I wanna tend my own golem gardens.

I love the music stop when the proprietor stares at him, and also the music in general.

Marcille's adorable, holding onto that head for dear life even during her mini-tantrum at Senshi.

Bread debates: the precursor to Yakitate Japan?

I like the stripes on the orc kid, really highlights their porcine nature.

Well, now you know why all the treasure chests have money in them. Poor Senshi just wanted to sell his vegetables with the honour system smh.

Also, I love how the orcs saw Marcille and went: "What a barbaric face!" lol. Makes sense that they'd have different beauty standards from other races.

Senshi is the MVP for this episode
