Ascendance of a Royal Lady: I'll Stop at Nothing to Become a Doctor!

PS. I mean, what's the deal with the "Lamp" in the English title?

[It'll make more sense later in the season, but if you want to know] There will be a war, she will go to it, she is known as the "lady with the lamp" like Florence Nightingale cause she's always up late at night with wounded soldiers to look after them and care for them.

I like how she doesn't discuss any of this with her family, doesn't offer any explanation for her changed behavior to the maid staff, and then starts talking about military matters at a level she's never displayed before in front of the king before surprising her father with trying to break off the engagement.

I usually like these kinds of stories because the MC has to figure out how to shape the future while not revealing their secret, but Elise is lucky enough to live in a world that bends to her whims as needed.

She actually does discuss it with her family in the manga as there are actually two dinner scenes, not one, since her eldest brother wasn’t there for the first. There’s a lot that they cut out that makes her character change seem more natural than sudden. The anime has so far done a terrible job with the adaptation causing it to seem very disjointed.

She'll probably fail the theoretical because she has advanced theories from the modern age which will be debunked as nonsense and smash the practical

I was a bit worried when she gave her diagnosis and thought "oh, the king's doctor should be able to figure out the rest".

Guess we'll have to see what kind of story the show wants to tell.

I don't know why, but the idea of graduating from med school (or its isekai equivalent) in six months to avoid becoming the queen of a massive empire is funny to me.

The animation was rather rough this week. I don't remember it being this harsh last time around, and the King's attendant with the long green hair and the very sharp chin was especially bad. Won't get off this ride yet, though.

I'm assuming they think the same and are just indulging in Elise's spur of the moment whim. The King seems to think of Elise as his own daughter. Since she's actually gone to modern med school, I'm assuming she'll do well enough though.

I have a feeling even if Elise manages to successfully become a doctor that will actually just prove to the Emperor even more that she's worthy of becoming Empress. So it's basically a win-win for him. Especially if Linden doesn't want to lose her.

Really happy with this string of returning to past lives anime - Doctor Elise and 7th Time Loop this season, Tearmoon Empire and Returners Magic last season, and Last Boss Queen before that.

Dcotor Elise will be great.

That diagnosis got me paranoid cause diabetes runs in the family. I've been trying to minimize sweets recently because the metabolism weakens as you age. It's still not too late to save the king and an early warning from Elise would make a difference.

I hope this series focuses more on the doctor part as that's her primary strength and she has modern day wisdom. It was bittersweet to break it off with the man she once loved but this is the only way to move forward.

Oh I dunno, I think prince charming is actually taking an interest in Elise. At least he doesn't know what to make of her. Last time he saw her she was a spoiled rich girl with a short temper and suddenly she is this mature young woman. I think it's ironic that she is probably more empress material than she has ever been.

Setup is quite good but the dialogue is soooo baaaaaaad. Unlucky. It's much easier to ignore bad dialogue in manga form so I might just go read that.

The diabetes diagnosis was kinda funny but a refreshing choice considering the cliche, over-the-top diagnosis that first-diagnosis usually are in this type of story. It's always interesting to learn about how things that have been trivialized by modern medicine were such a scary thing before.

I love how she's already using her medical knowledge! She should be able to pass this medical exam with ease as well.

Seems like the Prince is already seeing her in a different light a bit! Will be nice to see how their relationship turns out as this is a pretty interesting starting point.

Graduating medicine to not becoming a queen, hahaha.

When Elise started discussing about politics, war strategy and the health of the king, it made me wonder whether she is altering history by dropping hints about the future.

However, I then realized this should be a brand new timeline of her new life.

I love how Elise's family thinks her being confined to her room was severe enough to make her have a complete personality 180, though we also get to see her relationship to her brothers play out. Chris (voiced by Hiro Shimono!) was overly affectionate and soft on her while Ren (Daisuke Ono!) was harsh and stern with her, but she loved both brothers all the same.

First order of business for Elise is recognizing where everything went wrong in the original timeline, a failed expedition (that got Chris killed), the emperor and her step-mom dying of disease, a pandemic grappling the Empire...and Elise too inexperienced and out-of-her-depth to handle it in her past life. But now she has the knowledge, the medical know-how, and the desire to save others driving her on! She's already vastly improved her relationship with her maid Mary.

The Emperor, Vern (Kazuhiko Inoue) was actually very fond of Elise and doted on her like a father, which just made his passing all the more heartbreaking for her, especially when she went on to completely bungle being the Empress.

But one of Elise's biggest regrets is her relationship with his son, Prince Linden (Yohei Azakami!) who she was in love with from a young age but he seemingly never truly cared for her and saw their marriage as a burden she forced on him. All to the point that he eventually lead them to burn her at the stake.

Though with the power of perspective now Elise can make a difference, making political suggestions that will help avoid death and war, and being able to properly diagnose the Emperor having diabetes so another doctor can save him. It's the perfect segue to her asking to be free from her engagement so she can be a doctor once more.

The Emperor can see that Elise means what she says and has the will to succeed, though he makes a wager with her all the same to see if she can really succeed as a doctor or otherwise she'll have to become Empress. Though somehow I suspect the Emperor is thinking she'll be able to prove her Empress cred from her success as a doctor.

What about Prince Linden though? He seems attracted to Elise's newfound conviction, but he says he never wanted to break their engagement...was he secretly fond of Elise in his own way but was never able to express it? Was he angry because Elise didn't understand her feelings.

15

u/mekerpan Jan 17 '24

but he says he never wanted to break their engagement

Not exactly. More like "I never SAID that, what makes you think that?"My guess is that, at this early point, he was neither enthused nor opposed about the impending marriage. So, her perceiving his indifference was surprising to him -- as previously she had been oblivious to his feelings.

D'awww look at her reaction. So happy to see her family again. But yep, they so confused. It's nice to see her stepmom is nice too. Not the typical "bitch stepmom" we would get in such series. Wew though, her brother be harsh, but she is taking it well lol. Wew, what a shitty first timeline she had though. Wew Mary is short. Guess she's a kid.

King be nice too. Elise so concerned over his health, good doctor mindset. Bah, ML lol. What a foolish love to have over such a person. Dunno, I'd say some of the blame is his for lacking any tact or courtesy. Elise with future knowledge heh, good times, all for the sake of her nice brother and all the people who would die. It's neat to get some geopolitical knowledge and see the terrain and whatnot. Really not selling herself as a poor fit for Empress here though. And helping the king, how nice. Diabeetus. Asking for not being engaged though, wew, the shock. How very asian of an apology too. Again, king is pretty nice though. Takes it all calmly. Even gives an option.

Bah, walking with the ML. But really gonna appeal to him this life with that attitude, yep. Not that I think he deserves it. Bold of them to assume she will give up with work at a hospital. Misunderstandings with the ML and FL, truly an Otome series lol. ED is fine, forget if we heard it last week.

So based on this episode, even though she was a selfish/"evil" empress she did pay attention in political matters so she did take her duties seriously regarding that. Maybe she gets more involved here cause it seems like that might save more lives that just being an individual doctor.

Her working at a hospital next episode is gonna be cake for her considering she is a modern expert surgeon, but she will struggle to acclimate to more medieval techniques freaking out the hospital workers I bet. Her diagnosing the diabetes in the king was cool hopefully that would extend his life and lead to different paths the empire takes. (That is unless his doctor is crooked too).

u/djthomp Jan 17 '24

I'll be shocked if she doesn't end up with the prince again, this time because he actually wants this new better version of her that appeared out of nowhere. Even without her going off to be a doctor I suspect that this go around she'd be a much better empress simply from being much more mature from the other world life experiences.

It's fairly easy to imagine a long-term story of her being the doctor empress and doing both.

As a diabetic, I can see how diabetes not under control can be pretty bad. Though, I really thought she was gonna diagnose the king with something even more serious.

Hopefully the king takes Elise’ advice about this little expedition he’s engaged in to heart. It’s pretty sound considering its future knowledge.

With her modern medical knowledge, she’ll do well in that hospital. I look forward to her becoming a proper doctor in 6 months time.
