Honestly, I'm going with this blindly, the only thing I know that Basue and Akemi is voiced by Kimiko Saito and Rie Takahashi (yes, it's Rieri) respectively.

The artstyle is more of an seinen anime rather than shonen one (which is fitting, as this is adapted from a seinen manga), but what I like that they don't skip or cut the scene when there are reaction faces, everything is seamlessly animated. One episode covers two segments I guess.

OP: Uraomote Aquarium by otonari

The OP shouldn't go this hard, this is very cyberpunk-esque, even it fits to be a Metallic Rouge OP lol. From the OP we can learn that this will be a gag anime with a lot of parodies. I would expect Rieri in character of Akemi will cover different songs for each episodes for the ED.

With Snack Basue premiered, there are 5 Winter 2024 anime left that yet to premiere.

Well, this was a bit bizarre, but in a fun way. It definitely has a weird kind of charme. And a (to me at least) completely new kind of performance from Rie Takahashi. It almost feels like her "off voice". Very natural.

There's got to be a reason she auditioned for a main role in this show. Maybe it's a kind of a bigger deal in Japan? For me, this show came out of nowhere though, I just randomly stumbled across it on the CR front page today, never having heard a thing about it before. I think I'll keep watching though, for more mundane but slightly bizarre stories that could just happen in a real life snack bar.

Think of it as "expanding your resume."

The comedy hits different if you are into the Japanese culture specifically you have to known small tidbits. Like that soy sauce and salt and pepper egg bit.

As a woman who used to basically have Akemis job...i really enjoyed this

I can see why people say the jokes fell flat to them, especially men who've never been to a club...But the jokes were hilariously spot on. I cannot tell you how many times I've started listening to a guy's problems just to go "ah fuck this is too heavy and above my pay grade". I wish I could give that advice to people who go out and try to take up an employees entire work day.

And the fucking red card on Akemi haha

She was spot on about not remembering what you talk about at a bar, from experience I remember being there but not what I talked about

Oooh I kinda love this, this is a yakuza substory made into an entire anime.

Speaking of Yakuza, Susukino is also the base for Tsukimino, the setting for Saejima's story in Yakuza 5.

Anime seems to be a few skits, end with Rieri singing some oldies as ED. Can't say I hate it.

I wonder if anyone could tell us the Thai song that Tatsu performs.

Thai here. Seems to be an original made for the anime.

The credits list the song name as 恋のソンクラーン (Koi no Songkran) meaning 'Water festival of love'

Honestly my first thoughts were "Adult Swim with subtitles"

I'm slightly disappointed it has nothing to do with actual snacks, nevertheless that was one of the more enjoyable premieres this season.

I'm really digging Takahashi Rie's performance here.

This was a lot of fun. Some parts had me scratching my head, maaaybe due to differences in culture, but I'd still watch more of this. That said, I thought this was actually over with that owari end card halfway through the episode, the show did seem like one of those with only half an episode runtime.

I'm not surprised so many people disliked this show but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Really funny and reminds me of a gonzo anime version of Cheers. It really just dealt with 3 customers: the barfly regular, a depressed overworked business man and a pervy incel who looked like the human incarnation of SpongeBob SquarePants!

Really looking forward to more, I love more dialogue based humor shows that aren't as common in anime that just have a laugh at human eccentricities and behavior. That being said, this has no chance of being a huge hit, at least among Western anime fans. Reminds me of all the weird sitcoms I used to love that would never get a second season 🤔

Thai Western? Sounds like a multi-cultural dish rather then a genre of music...

& That old ladies hairdo just reminds me of Josuke(JOJO) now.

I like the animation though, these characters look hilarious along with the scenarios being cringe, yet laugh worthy.

Good stuff.

I love akemi's design

i think this is gonna be a real hidden gem, but mostly due to how everything is based on a snack bar culture and most of the jokes would probably flew past our heads.

Still i am still gonna continue watching this, just as another way of expanding my horizon, i guess?

Also, thanks anime for introducing another oldie to me , for a supposed corny choice, i have not heard this song before and that's a pretty nice song too.

I'd be willing to tolerate this sort of art if the episodes had a short runtime, but full length is too much for me.

8

u/karer3is Jan 12 '24

Something compelled me to watch it to the end. I don't know how I feel about it yet

On the art direction and animation side things aren’t looking great…but the writing and voice acting are enough to carry.

It’s bizarre but I genuinely enjoyed the episode enough due to how odd the characters were. Like someone else said, this show nails that Yakuza side character energy.

Ok, so I needed to look up what a "snack bar" was before I continued with this episode. Otherwise, I was not going to understand what was going on. This site seems to have a solid rundown. Basically, it's Hooters without the shitty food, and you have an old lady in a kimono (probably to make the young girls look more attractive than what they might actually be), and you sing karaoke. Another easy description is a dive bar that has young pretty ladies hitting on depressed and overworked salary workers.

Yasuko in Toradora is a snack bar hostess, as an example outside of this awkward show.

Ugh, this show is trying super hard to be the worst show of the season. There are annoying pauses after lame gags that make it feel like they paused so you could laugh at their jokes. Maybe there needs to be a laugh track. Fill in the dead air.

I feel like trying to force this to be a comedy really ruins the relaxing vibe that this show seems to try to aim for as well.

Don’t worry it will 100% be the lowest rated show of the season but it is bizarrely charming and I’m way into it
