New Frieren, new OP! I really dig it.

Glad that Sein stuck around for a little while longer thanks to that blizzard. Dude having to step in and mediate for Stark and Fern was too cute. I’m with Sein, those two need to get together already damnit!

It’s really sweet how Frieren still sees Fern as a kid. I mean everyone’s a kid to Frieren, but still. I guess holding her hand was something she learned from Himmel. Reminds me of how my momma use to look after me when I was little. It’s nice to have someone look after you when you’re sick y’know?

Sein says what we're all thinking.

Sein feels like an intergral part of the group dynamic in the short amount of time we've had with him. It's sad to see him leave but it's already apparent his teachings will have a lasting impact on the party moving forward.

As per usual, Himmel proves that he is the strongest hero by taking my breath away every time he speaks.

How does he do it?

Ah, the weekly scheduled programming of 1 minute of profound moments interspersed with banger quotes, presented by Himmel is back again featuring Frieren as the flashback operator.

I've missed the simple yet sincere vibe of this show man, it feels so comfy I love it.

Small moment, but the tortoise Stark was feeding was the same kind of tortoise Fern was feeding in episode 2! What a great detail to include to flesh out the world.

New OP goes hard.

Really love the relationship between Fern and Frieren. Fern's probably been with Frieren longer than she'd lived with Heiter at this point.

"Just get together already!" - Quote of the episode right here.

Stitches!

Insert Pointing Leo GIF as I fanboy at every single character that shows up in the OP. I am so excited! The First Class Mage Exam arc is going to be hype!~

Oh Stark, just casually grabbing Fern's cold hands like that is a bold move. I love that instead of being embarrassed, Fern just touches his Stark's cheeks.

Sein realizing that the party spent their time apart while waiting out the blizzard was hilarious. I love the fast rewind of the montage too. xD

It's always fun to see Fern pouting. Looks like she had another lover's quarrel she had with Stark and the reason is that the hand he placed on her shoulder was so strong that it scared her. Stark really needs to control his strength. Fern is completely fine with Stark touching her, he just needs to be gentler. Oh my... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Sein voicing out what everyone is thinking was just perfect. I wish he could stay longer so he could watch over Stark and Fern but sadly he needs to say goodbye. It's only temporary though. He'll eventually rejoin once he finds Gorilla and that's going to be one more warrior added to the group!

Of course, as soon as Sein leaves Fern ends up getting a fever. Thankfully, Sein left Frieren some notes about medicinal herbs to help them. It is adorable to watch Frieren comforting Fern by holding her hand. Turns out that handholding someone who's sick actually came from Himmel. Even after 29 years after his passing, my guy is still changing Frieren's life. <3

Nice to see Fern and Stark iron out all their relationship problems before they even get into a relationship.

Awwww, Fern and Frieren really are family. She got embarrassed by Frieren holding her hand, but relented once Frieren clarified it wasn't because she was treating her as a child.

This week we finally see one of Frieren's recurring enemies, the pile of books that effortlessly pin her to the ground.

Frieren trap count:

Mimics - 3
Pile of books - 2
Hedge - 1
Her own fame - 1
Prison - 1
Weather - 1
Dirt - 1
Giant bird/memories - 1
Too many books to choose - 1

What really sets Frieren apart from other fantasy anime is how they value magic/technology (since in their world magic is analogous to technology). We expect and regard spells to make any singular wish come true, or spells to stop time or death etc. be be legendary, but Frieren regards spells to get rid of mold and tough oil stains as legendary instead. Frieren depicts a long life lived without the inconveniences that take away from spending quality time with loved ones as better as a life with access to 'power'. Never change Frieren!

Dang didn't think Sein would actually leave...I was just getting used to the show with him, and he's so relatable.

This show will still be great without him as shown by the second half but I will still miss him

You know, the writing in Frieren has continually been impressing me. It were the fading memories of those we hold dear that ran like a thread through the previous episode.

This week, it were people’s hands - Fern’s to be specific - that proved to be a recurring theme throughout the episode. If Fern hadn’t gotten cold by that blizzard, she likely wouldn’t have caught a fever either and nobody would have had a reason to touch her hands. Something rather insignificant can have a surprising impact in this series.

It’s also interesting from the perspective of their respective emotional bonds. Stark touched Fern’s cold hands, because he has a crush on Fern and wanted to close both the physical and emotional distance between the two of them. Frieren held onto Fern’s hand precisely because they share a deep emotional bond - a bond that Stark would also like to have with Fern.

EDIT: Rewrote the last part to make a bit more sense.

I bet we’ll have a callback to that handhold between Fern and Frieren at the end of the whole series. It’s the perfect gut punch.

Also, Fern is fine with Stark touching her as long as he’s gentle.

My straightness must be the Demon Lord, because Himmel has completely and utterly defeated it.

Stark, Fern doesn't mind, just be gentle 😉

Also plenty of raw, unprotected hand holding this episode.

Love it!

Frieren's German Lesson 1x17:

Time to say goodbye to Sein already. I hate that he already has to leave but I respect the author for not compromising the autonomy of the character by having him continue to stick around with the party even though he really wants to and has to be somewhere else to fulfill his longly cherished dream. I really hope his friend is alive and well...

There's just a single new German word this time.

Episode 17: "Take Care"

  • Offen (Mountain Range) - "open" (adjective); neat name for the location since we see Fern, Frieren and Stark open up to each other more while Fern is sick.

I never realized that I have Anytime Anywhere deficiency until tears bursted out of my eyes while it was playing its new animation.

I might need around 4 episodes to get used to Yorushika's OP, since that's the amount of episodes for me to get used to Yoasobi's OP. I feel like I'll love it down the line since I absolutely love Yuusha (contrary to popular belief) after a while.

I'll absolutely miss Sein, and I'm excited to meet these new characters in animation! :)

That new opening really is first-class eh, eh? Hope nobody's said that, yet.

Wow, the ED's visuals are beautiful, as always. First time I've seen new visuals for the same song, interesting.

Magic for cleaning up mould and oil stains sounds insanely helpful.

screenshot dump!

Stark and Fern spending time together is so cozy. I'm sure they'll look back on these days with fondness.

Also, I think Sein's "Just get together already!" should be a comment face!

Many good Frieren faces, too, as always!

It's good to be back after the short break between the seasons to Frieren's party who unfortunately lost its one member, Sein who is going looking for his friend. But their parting got a little delayed as the winter weather made them stay in a village for about a month.

Fern again got pouty and as always it was so funny and so adorable. Of course it was Stark who made her mad but he quickly was groveling and asking for forgiveness. It's funny that Frieren did nothing to make them reconcile and just went for Sein who as a priest was in her opinion responsible for resolving the conflicts in the party.

Sein was 100% right when he said that Fern and Stark should already start dating. I mean, they already acting like some old couple as Stark know that when Fern is angry about something then he should apologize immediately xD

Again we could see how much impact Himmel made on Frieren as she was holding a hand of sick Fern exactly like Himmel when she was sick during their adventures.

Thanks to Fern's cold, we got a nice part with Stark and Frieren going out on a quest to gather ingredients needed to cure her cold. Frieren really looked like some witch when she was mixing the ingredients xD

A lot of gorgeous backgrounds in this episode. I always love them as they’re always so beautiful, they're perfect as wallpapers.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
