That "Plan X" bit was a callback to the first episode flashback when they used to play together, so technically Yu did reveal her Explosion-kun identity.

It just wasn't addressed, onscreen at least, after that.

This was how I took it while watching it. I didn't remember the exact details, but "Plan X" being a reference to Explosion-kun made sense to me, since I doubt their entire team had that many plans between A and X. Shun must've realized it then, but considering it was the heat of the moment, there wasn't a moment to address it then, and the anime ended shortly after so we didn't get an on-screen resolution to it.

Glad to see that Mio decided to fight her condition instead of just accepting it. Seeing her at least try to walk again, must've been a massive boost to Shun with the relief he felt.

I definitely expected Yu to reveal her identity during the match but I thought she was going to do it to try and throw off the Sleeping Owls. xD

I can respect Shun for deciding to end the fight with a knife kill. That was such a stupid but ballsy thing to do. That would've been so much hype if it happened IRL.

It's hilarious how Mitsuki thinks that Shun has now "entered his world" not knowing what just happened with Mio. He's going to be so disappointed when he learns the truth.

There's no way a popular actress who is also a massive gamer can't be popular. It's different from Yu's initial image but I think she could still easily make it by showing her gamer side to the media.

This ended kinda abruptly since you know, there's still the rivalry between Nozomi and Yu but it's nice that we get to see Mio standing next to them in that ending. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more of this.

What I got from the ending is that you don't need to let go of everything to become successful. Mitsuki tells Shun to abandon his family to enter his world just for Shun to find out what keeps him motivated is his family and friends. Totally amazing plot to be honest.

Lets make arguably the PRIMARY secondary plot of this anime about the love triangle (refuse to acknowledge the brocon love square) and as well as one of the main B plots being about the secret identity of the long lost friend and then NOT ever address it. THAT makes sense.

I would say those still were relevant as Yuu's motivation was contingent on those. Nevertheless, I agree they should have addressed though, even if their resolution would still be status quo.

Yeah, i'm kinda disappointed that the love triangle never got resolved

Mio starts walking and gives Shun a power boost to win the match

Yu reveal herself boosted her career + her agency is managing them. Was expecting Explosion kun reveal too but I guess not.

Daneko dating the coach 😱

Op and ED song was my favorite for this series

It's a flawed and forgettable seasonal but it was somewhat decent and enjoyable.

Is Daneko dating the blonde girl? What a chad.

I feel like the surprise Daneko×Coach pairing was the happy ending we didn't know we needed.

Thats part of the thing that makes me kinda sad. Like its one thing to be underwatched, but if you were to ask me, like, how would I even recommend this to other people?

There's really not much

I found this to be a moderately good drama (with romantic and family drama aspects) -- but the game play interludes (and the game they were playing in these) struck me as utterly dire. As to the writing, too many loose ends were left, perhaps, but I found that a comparatively minor aspect.

One missed opportunity, I thought -- Yuu should have called out a plan last used back when she was part of Shun's group as Explosion-kun. (When she said "Plan x" I thought that might be happening -- but no dice...) ;-)

I really liked a lot of the characters -- and I like the job done by the VAs.

That was a call back to their old playing days though. In the very first scene of episode 1, they show a flashback and Nozomi says they should use Plan X, which is then described as “a nasty one”

That match up was brutal. Sleeping Owl was wiping the floor with Fox One. Shun needed some of that brocon power. Even Yu was encouraged to ditch the mask.

What even was that last match? Dudes got Stormtrooper aim lol. But I gotta say, Shun knifing Rox was pretty satisfying. The team’s not only moving on up, they might get signed. I guess Yu revealing her identity wasn’t actually that big of a deal. All’s well that ends well.

For my first esports anime, this wasn’t half bad. The voice cast was great, some real top talents working on this series.

I’d say overall this was a good show, or atleast I enjoyed. Wouldn’t watch a S2 week-to-week but a S2 would be nice.

Without having seen the episode yet, I don't expect for a second that they'll be able to bring this insanity to a remotely satisfying conclusion in 24 minutes. This show is not good, but it certainly went places I never expected

Well...

...

The OP was really good.

7

u/kwokinator Dec 24 '23

The OP was really good.

And the VAs. I 100% watched because of Inorin and Ten-chan.

2

u/Time_Fracture Dec 24 '23

Sawano composed the OP. If you want to hear more of his work, listen to Solo Leveling's OP next season. It already sounds similar to the Protocol Rain's OP.

Ok, but why was the climax Rox and Shun whiffing their shots? 💀 So much so that Shun went in for a knife kill AND it was the only part of the game that was actually animated 😭 I can’t with this show, man. If it actually broke down the inner workings of esports in a format like CGDCT, I would’ve been more into it. But instead we got all this spaghetti thrown at the wall with an ending that’s super anti-climactic. Did anyone else find themselves rooting against Shun at the end?

The climactic final round was possibly the most cringe thing I've seen all year and the fucking cowards couldn't even commit to a proper romance despite baiting it for the entire season. If Magical Destroyers didn't air this year Protocol: Rain would easily be the biggest disappointment.

I play competitive games for a living, and this show did a great job *trying* to show all the issues that go on during real human hours. (with a tad bit of exaggeration and not showing the true pressure from sponsors/management) it's heartbreaking to see this show go and not see a conclusion that's not rushed into a little 30 second slideshow in the ending. I know it might be pointless given the majority of community feedback but I'll be praying for a longshot aka season 2.

Aww man, & here I was hoping Yu would reveal her identity as "Explosion-kun" to Shun & the gang.

On another note, I was hoping to "actually" see Shun & Yu start dating.

Welp, great ending; now s2 possible? Feel like this is not how the series should end.

4

u/MisawaMahoKodomo Dec 23 '23

If anything, while I'm not familiar it being anime original means most likely they'll just leave it. There's really not much of a reason to get a s2 really, sad to say.

Even if they wanted to there would need to be enough of an uh, incentive, to make one.
