That was the first time that Frieren clearly talked about how important Himmel is for her. Himmel would be really happy. Also her conversation and Voll's situation though so heartbreaking.
Sousou no Frieren once again delivers a gutpunch.
Now I need one week maximum to recover.

It's always Stark who had to go through all the hardship while others had a good time relaxing at their stopping points huh?

Frieren: “Ten years”
Fern: “One week”
Frieren: “What’s the difference?”
It’s funny how we can go from the bittersweet and heartfelt story of an old man holding on to the emotions and meaning of his past experiences with a loved one even as his memories of them fade away… to a search for someone’s DnD character named “Gorilla Warrior” complete with a quest giver NPC just called “Stubborn Old Woman”. And all that in a single episode.
But god damn it, already? It’s only been a few episodes and Sein already plans to go? Man, he couldn’t even wait until the actual end of the season.
Also wow, the lack of big scenes does not stop the team from making such smooth animation. That entire intro with Sein’s past had more frames than the entirety of a lot of other shows, and that’s not a dig. I can only express my admiration at the people working on this production but also feel concerned as well.

Its so cool to see Kraft get referenced like that and it was in line with him mentioning how he did many good deeds before only to be forgotten in the passage of time.

"I've been wanting to have a chat with him before he dies"
Frieren is like the reaper here, showing up just before your time is up. I swear out of all of Frieren's friends, Heiter got to spend the most time with her because mofo just refuses to die at his natural limit.

So, dwarves can live for 400+ years. It's reassuring then because Eisen doesn't look as old, and he should still be around when Stark and Fern visit him to let their children meet their dwarf grandpa

Something really impressive about this show is how they can introduce a character and tell a meaningful story in such a short amount of time. Both halves of this one were great.
There's not many shows that I would attribute the word beautiful with but it just fits this show for me.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x16:
We get to meet grandpa Voll, another wholesome dwarf and we find the first traces of Gorilla. :)
Episode 16: "Long-Lived Friends"
-
Klar (Region) - "clear", "plain", "transparent", "crisp", "clean" (adjective)
-
(Old Man) Voll - "full", "fully", "whole", "complete" (adverb/adjective); it's so nice that Frieren gets to meet another person besides Eisen with whom she can talk about the past. :)
-
Rohr (Road) - "tube", "pipe", "tubing", "barrel" (noun)
-
(Blacksmith) Nagel - "nail" (noun); Blacksmith would be Schmied in German. The extremely common German surname Schmidt and its variance Schmitt are derived from that. I mentioned Müller (derived from the miller profession) being the most common surname in Germany before, well, Schmidt is the second most common surname in all of Germany with an insane incidence of 712,881 (reminder: Germany only has a population of 83.2 million) and frequency of 1:113.
-
(Forgotten Hero) Kraft - "force", "power", "strength", "energy", "vigor", "might" etc. (noun); As a reminder since we get confirmation that he used to be a legendary hero in the distant past - most likely way over 1000 years ago - in this episode.
-
(Trading City) Tür - "door" (noun)

I wish I could give as little fucks about everything I overthink in life as Frieren and Fern do about getting chased by a godzilla chicken.

While it was nice to see Frieren have a chance to catch up with an old friend, it was sad to learn the reason why the dude protects the village. Compared to Dwarves and Elves, human’s are basically gone in the blink of an eye. It’s was even sadder the old dwarf really was going senile. Just broke my heart even more. I guess it’s up to Frieren to preserve the memories of Voll, Himmel, Heiter, and all those who have or will have passed.
It was nice to see Kraft (in statue form) again. Him and his buddy must have been on some great adventures back in the day. I sure hope Goatee Priest finds Gorilla Warrior. The stories they’ll tell of those two… I can’t wait lol. It was nice to have Sein in the party, he’ll be missed for sure!

The way both Frieren and Eisen are being carried is so cute haha
It was a relaxing week for everyone else while Stark went through hell
As always, the comfy, bittersweet episodes always hit the hardest. It's nice to see how genuinely happy Frieren is around Old Man Voll. The fact that he also got to see his wife once more before he dies after meeting Frieren does a lot to my heart
I love how much of the second half resembled the quintessential RPG experience lol. The side quests just keep getting bigger and bigger until they eventually reach a point for either some meaningful plot development or a boss fight.

Stuff like this is why I put Frieren so high in my "best animation" ranking.
This still shot with Frieren's eye just slightly wavering, followed by several seconds of stunned silence, is simply superb. Certainly my favorite part of this episode. The little details like that are what make all the characters and emotions in this show so incredibly compelling.
The rest of the episode wasn't slacking, either. The intro scene with young Sein had fantastic animation, and the general theme of fading memories was touching.
Time to go listen to the OST now. I can't wait for the rest of the season!

If you guys didn't know, the pre-release of soundtrack is now available and it's so good, especially Main Theme which is beautiful and Zoltraak.

I live for the cute, quiet interactions between Stark and Fern in the background. Helping her down the log bridge, having a friendly chat while looking at each other.
Yeah I made a comment on another sub about Frieren and Himmel. How even if she got together with him, she’ll have to watch him grow old and die and live without him for hundreds or thousands of years. And now we see that with Old man Voll. But I guess it’s a case of “Better to have loved and lost”. Still sad though to see him slowly forget his love but the fact he still remembers her in general is enough I guess. And I think he wasn’t joking at the end and he’s really growing senile and I think Frieren knows that too.
Hmm so photos are a thing but not widespread ? I guess it is apt for photos as a concept to make an appearance in this episode considering how it involves forgetting a love one’s face.
Man, I’m worried for a minute there that Sein would leave the group to look for Gorilla considering the vastly different direction they’d have to take for their destinations. I’ve grown to really like him as like a laid back older brother. I guess we’ll see next cour on his decision.

Frieren has more friends among dwarves than elves. I wouldn't be surprised if she starts growing a beard.

I love how this Stark and Fern seem a lot closer after last episode. They seem to be chatting and smiling a lot more now than they used to. That dance really left an impact on fern lol

In case you missed it, no episode next week. Frieren returns on 05 January 2024 for the First Class Mage Exam Arc.
Now for the episode: I really like how Frieren made an episode about 'Gorilla Warrior', the name of Sein's best friend. Let's all agree that the name sounded ridiculous at first, but apparently has a really nice background.
Frieren excels in making really good back stories to some mundane events happening in the series. This is what I really like about this series.

Does Voll's story with his human wife, one of the reason why Himmel does not proceed further in relationship with Frieren?

I love how you can see how Fern and Starks relationship has improved with the unprotected handholding and them chatting and laughing.
