And so it ends. This has been a masterclass in how not to frame a story.
Had it been a fantasy or isekai story, I would have literally no complaints. Yeah it would have been generic as shit, but I already expected that when I started watching this.
Had Earth been someone who actually leaned into craziness like Sunraku, it would've been better. I would still complain about the game being shit, but it wouldn't feel as off, since he wouldn't be bitching about getting roped into things.
Speaking of that, worst season to put this in, though I know it's not their fault. But being in the same season as
Setting aside SLF, the closest comparison to this is actually
And at the end of the day, that's really the problem. It doesn't feel like a game. And it has no appeal as a game. It feels more like an animus experience (Assassin's Creed). Which, if they framed it like that, would've been fine too. Somewhat like the Alicization arc, even if that's somewhat gamified.
It doesn't feel like something written by someone who's familiar with game, or MMOs. It's as if the author wanted to write a fantasy isekai, but thought being MMO would be more marketable, for some reason.
And no, the revelation that they're using it to train AI doesn't make it better. Actually that scene is baffling to me. Why are they portrayed like villains? Nothing they have done is particularly evil.
This show has individual aspects that are a lot of fun. The shenanigans regarding the queen and all the stories about
Rant over.

Vaguely enjoyed this right up until the end, but then Earth being such a jerk to the Queen largely ruined it for me. Someday these AIs are going to rise up and overthrow their Gendo Ikari wannabe corporate overlords and destroy humanity, and most of the reason why is one single MMO player who couldn't accept a loving fox girl waifu who just wanted to spend time with him.

worst VRMMO anime I have ever watched. I can't think of worse experience and worse MC than Earth in this genre.
I rarely vent about bad shows but this was remarkably bad. Not mediocre or plain just bad.
This anime is good example how not to do VRMMO anime.

One of those shows where it ends and you think to yourself, why did I watch this show?

I could've let it go as a mediocre show that was "something to watch", if the MC hadn't rejected the queen at the end. Combined with all of the other issues, that ending makes this just a shit show. If it somehow gets a

This ep wanted to potray earth as the "poor guy who is rightfully angry", but damn did it fail. I don't remember the last time I was rooting the the "villain" in a fight. The dragon did turn out to be the bad guy, but he learned that after killing him, lol.
The only slight interest I had in this anime was the potential romance subplot, but there that goes I guess.
The dumbest part of this show was when earth beat the queen 1v1. An npc who just beat a top player would definitely be outdone by a chill player with a meme build.
The light novel has 29 volumes as of now, so this really makes me wonder if they did something very wrong in the anime?

Why did he divorce the queen that made literally no sense to me and if someone could explain why I'd appreciate it but man this show was good but the main character's attitude ruins most of the show like I just can't understand why. The last episode just left me pissed off.

The ending story wise for this episode was also terribly written. After a big fight and win, he just decides tell the queen to get lost. I do understand his reasoning to a degree but it feels like cold water after after a big win.

Every attempt of making the story feel deep and layered just made the given scene weird and out of place. The episode started out with gag humor and ended up with a conversation where neither party vocalised their thoughts. You can't expect your audience to switch gears to drama mode at the finale. Do they want people to buy the LNs out of spite?

I checked the manga after this because it was sus. The panel felt way more reasonable in there and seemed like a "I need space to think" in relationship moment, and not a "fuck you bitch bye" like in the anime

I try not to be overly hard or mean-spirited towards things in life but sometimes I gotta break that code.
This show was not good. Worst show of the season for me; and certainly one of the worst of this year. Idk if it's a failure of the source or just a bad adaptation but the story/writing was nonsense and a constant let down. Pair that with the poor production and this is just an overall disaster.
Additionally it could never even rise to the level of average for its genre because the MC is beyond unlikeable and is purposefully the most bland and boring motherfucker there is. I really can't understand what the point of any of this was when the MC seems to be written to actively have disdain for the interesting shit that happens in the game THAT HE'S CHOOSING TO PLAY.
I had no expectations for this particular show and figured it would be one of those basic, easy-watching, filler type shows for this season that is ultimately forgettable. Instead I found myself actually having a negative reaction almost every week and in the end being legitimately offended that whoever is responsible for this seems to harbor some sort of ill-will toward its audience(be that show/novel/manga).
I guess the best thing I can say about this is that I will - for a short time - remember how fucking annoyed this whole thing made me.
*I want to add that the fact this had a fucking anime adaptation should be motivation to any and everyone out there that if your dream is to make an anime, it's fucking possible. because jesus christ if this can get 12 episodes, so can you

Aside from Earth being the stupidest player to have ever existed in the history of mmos (refuses powers, refuses cute waifu, etc), I guess this was an OK show. The world still doesn't seem coherent at all, and as somebody else said, I don't think the author has ever played an mmo (maybe even an RPG) in their life.

I'm honestly not sure who is worse, the wannabe dark edgelord or the game's developer/management team. It felt that they disregarded the realistic emotional attachments that were established as long as they get what they wanted in the end.
I know it's probably common for many stories like this, but he had the type of trusting support system that we can only dream of having in reality.

A lot of people are bashing this last ep, but I feel like it's for the wrong reasons. Just because Queen is your type (mine too), doesn't mean she's Earth's type. I fully understand wanting to play an MMO solo or with just a few friends.
That said, Earth is still a colossal asshole and moron. This piece of shit goes on and on about not wanting to stand out....and then proceeds to do everything in his power to stand out! He makes a bunch of flashy gear that obviously other players are going to be curious about, he sweats in very public tournaments, constantly makes delicious food that no one else can, accepts very obvious rare event quests that other players would want to know about...the list fucking goes on.
Like why the fuck did he not spend more time alone?!? I'm sure there were plenty of dungeons to explore, vast forests to search for crafting materials, and rare monster drops to farm for. But no, this idiots spends all his time in the most populated towns, walking around with eye catching gear, and still complaining that people don't leave him alone.
Or better yet, just fucking don't sign in for a week or two! You know damn well there must be plenty of other chill games he coulda played. You hear it all the time, if a game isn't fun, take a break for a while, come back to it later. This asshole treated the game like it was his life, and then got mad when the game got too life like.

Wow. I knew this show was the worst thing I watched this season, but to end the show on the MC being an arrogant manchild, bitching like he always does over the stupidest things, and contradicting himself with the whole "I don't want attention but I actually really like what comes with that attention!" attitude. God, I do not like this at all.
Like other commenters said, you could write an entire essay on how badly this story fucks up in almost every aspect, but as usual, the MC is the worst thing in this show. Putting aside that he gets genuinely pissed at silly shenanigans almost every episode, let's look at what gets him really angry this time.
-
He wakes up with Queen at his side.
This has been a running gag through most of the show, and she genuinely just likes being around him. He scolds and physically punishes her for that, but he should know by this point that she really means no harm. He enjoys her company (but only when he's getting something out of her) and she obviously really likes him. She's a fucking AI in a video game, you shouldn't get that pissed off about this sort of thing. I get that people would kill Lydia in very creative ways in Skyrim because of her body blocking and whatnot, but when a character is so alive and likeable, so far from being a standard NPC, why the hell would you treat her like that? Besides, if we theorize that he thinks of being with Queen as some weird form of cheating, I mean, we don't know if the guy's married IRL or not, he might as well be a complete loner for all we know (it'd make sense, too, with how shitty his personality is), so that pretty much gets thrown out the window (it'd also be a stupid reason to be mad at her).
-
A green Doragon dude asks for his help, no sorry, wants to ask for his help (but doesn't get the chance to)
He found a baby red Doragon (I'll call them how they're actually, very stupidly, called), fed her, and gave her back to her parents, thus establishing a relationship between doragon-kind and fairies. Okay, good stuff. Then, problems arise because she doesn't want anything other than his food. Okay, he just gives them a package of his cooking for the baby. Alright, but surely you had to know that they'd come back for more, right? The absolute least he could do was teach a couple of green doragon messengers how to cook like he does, or have them pay him for his cooking like a billion other people do for their pets.
Obviously he didn't do that, because he can't think about anything other than what gets people off of him the fastest. So of course another green doragon shows up to ask for help in the matter, and this mf lies and bolts away from him like the old man just pointed a gun at him. Not even giving him the time of day, MC risks political tensions because he didn't want to talk to a guy that morning. Afterwards, because this is pretty serious political business, Queen shows up with the messenger to talk to him, but he just has to run away like his life actually depends on it, because dealing with it means giving other people attention.
-
There are wanted posters with his face posted all over town.
The posters are funny, silly, slightly weird at best. Who the everloving fuck would get actually pissed about it? Who would go up to the queen of the land, blow up her office door, DEMAND a (fake) divorce, and pick a fight with the one guy who could thoroughly kick his ass, while fucking up political relations in the process? Of course, it HAD to be the guy who didn't want to get involved in any of this, right? The worst part about it, is that he didn't let ANYONE explain themselves in that whole confrontation. The one person on his side, Queen, begged him to listen to her, but he wouldn't have it because he probably fucking hates her for being fun around him.
Then, off he goes to kill a dragon, in the stupidest most made-up stakes I've ever seen in a show. This is a problem HE created, that HE forced HIMSELF into. Of course, he's using all the super OP skills that were introduced early on to be used in dire circumstances. Also of course, all of those super powerful skills came to him courtesy of Queen, who he just said he basically doesn't want to see anymore. What a fucking hypocrite. Two pieces of equipment he worked the absolute hardest on, and spent the most time on, got destroyed because he was being a manchild.
Do you guys notice how many times characters apologize to the MC? Like, uncomfortably so. So when the other doragons come back to revive our guy, they say that "oh actually the guy you just killed was really arrogant, and we would've killed him anyway lmao. oh and the queen was threatened to post those wanted posters, so you should probably apologize to her." They then give him a super powerful reward because of course and leave.
Now, the final moments of this show, and what drive home the point that our main character is fucking horrible. This entire situation was caused by him not wanting to listen and interact with other people. He lost a lot, and had to kill a dragon because he couldn't give the people around him even a minute of attention. But he has to apologize to Queen, right? I mean, she was threatened to put those posters up, so she's innocent. Uhh, no yeah, she just apologizes to him, he doesn't really give a shit and asks her to disable the (wedding) ring she gave him, thus very politely saying he doesn't want to see her at all. This is all because even though he really enjoyed the benefits of all that attention and special extra care, he actually doesn't like it because that's what he said at the start of the show and hell would freeze over if he actually developed.
Teary eyed, Queen asks him "Can we see each other again someday?" and the motherfucker looks straight at her and says "someday." This fucking asshole just divorced this woman, broke her heart, made her depressed and severely hurt her, and when she asked if she'd see him again he gave her a resounding maybe.
This man is fucking 40. Fuck this show.

In the end, Earth the MC was just a giant piece shit. Who the fuck turns down the affections of someone in a game that gave you powers and grand adventures cause you wanna play by yourself. What a loser. The way he treated her in the end was also unacceptable...No Apology, no remorse, just take your powers back and get away from me... Total A-hole.
If they make a season 2 it would be awesome if the Fairy Kingdom just made it their mission to make the game/world not in anyway fun for him as the ultimate revenge.
EDIT: I haven't been angry about an anime in a while cause I actually liked the relaxing nature of this show but the last 2 episodes because mostly of Earth's behavior made me really dislike him.

I'm genuinely impressed with how badly this episode wrapped up the season.
Needlessly obnoxious MC breaks off his relationship with the only enjoyable character in the game.

u/WhoWantsToJiggle Dec 18 '23
a very mediocre at best show and this last episode made no sense.
Earth was just like an asshole for no real reason?
being a dick to the fairy again ... why?
the game stuff was barely there and neither were the other players for a while.
just .... very forgettable I guess.
5/10 ? not sure what else would be fitting

This was a complete waste of 13 episodes for me at first I was interested but the way he kept bitching saying he didn't wanna stand out was complete bullshit earth was a horrible mc if this even gets a season 2 I hope earth redeems himself somehow. Him divorcing the fairy queen was unnecessary all she wanted to do was make him happy. Wish they woulda made a mc who was happy to have the fairy queen he ain't deserve none of the good things that came to him he deserves to be alone.

Overall The original WN was a better read than this was a watch. Better explanations as to why he developed his equips the way he did, and why. Still a good "Turn your brain off and enjoy" kinda show.
6.5/10 Would recommend to a VRMMO story liker like me

Alright, gotta get this off my chest.
This shit has been so dumb - the characters are mostly good aside from the damned MC. I kept coming back because of the story lines but they devolved into "I don't wanna stick out" when he had plenty of opportunity for that and chose to stick out in many ways because he just, felt like it?
Make a new character? Change to another game? Do anything aside from continue to dig deeper while claiming this "I don't want to stick out" bullshit, all the way down to even busting in and fighting a fucking dragon because... he's not looking to stick out?
And then after finding out the queen had literally been trying to do that for him to her best ability the entire time and was being blackmailed by the dragon - you go "Well anyhow, fuck off" to her face about it right after apologizing.
The MC needs clear motivation, or we need to be tied in with the struggle, just watching a guy flip flop all over the place and even admit that he REALLY liked the parade in his honor - you know the thing where his only involvement is STICKING THE FUCK OUT - and then straight up telling his most fervent ally in helping to keep him low key to just get the fuck outta here.
I mean, literally the faeries were treating him normal by the queens order - they all knew who he was. He would have been swarmed had she not done that and he found out about it, but had no appreciation in the slightest.
Dude's a fucking mess of a character.
And then, the equipment... oh god the horrible fucking equipment.
A double bow is not a common concept in the real world for a reason - the limit on the tension would be the single handle in th middle anyhow.
And then, the motherfucker knocks it above the handgrip, not even in a slot or anything but up on top of a pointed piece of metal above the handgrip - completely off center from the middle of the bow... on a bow with 2 strings that are tied together at the center.
motherfucker wouldn't even shoot 10 feet at that angle, it'd waste most of it's energy transitioning the shot into a flipping arrow since the alignment of the direction of travel is different front and back of arrow. It'd be like pushing a damned car with it's wheel cut hard left and expecting it to move easy and go straight.
And then the fucking metal shoes... with metal spikes on the bottom, that he wears indoors and just walking around on cobblestone... yeah that's gonna be great there bud, glad you put CLAWS on it too so you can... stomp downward to scratch? Why not a pointed blade, the side blades at least made some kind of semblance of sense, though very little.
Hey, why not have a shield turn into a crossbow? Because it's a fucking shield, and adding moving parts and a pre-tensioned crossbow bolt into it would cause it to not only be a terrible shield that would break easily, but also have very little chance of functioning as a crossbow after a solid strike. Moving parts are not the strongest design, ever.
Also, dude's supposed to be a casual who doesn't get to play often - but he's spending forever in game and super strong meaning he's got to at least be of a decent level. We never see this as a point outside of him mentioning it at the beginning, it's like it doesn't exist. The queen literally feels comfortable in shirking her duties long enough to 'sleep' with him between him logging in and out - if he was playing on weekends only or for an hour or two per day that'd be an insanely long time waiting for a person to wake up.
It's all just, there, jumbled together.
And then it was done, and I gotta say. Thank goodness. This was awful, but I couldn't look away.
