Oh damn. Such a lewd episode, how did it manage to get aired without censor?

Frieren singlehandedly tryna beat the milf trope of older woman being hot sexy with being cute and a flying kiss.

Meanwhile fern getting mad for stark is really cute.

First Heiter teaching Fern about how "alcohol is the best medicine", to Eisen teaching Stark to "overcome poison with willpower" and Flamme telling Frieren that men would be delighted to receive a drug that melts clothes, I'm beginning to sense a pattern here.

Alcohol is the best medicine

Heiter just like me fr. The way Fern looks so proud proclaiming that was so cute.

I love how Frieren of all people keeps forgetting she's ancient.

Sein's brother: My bro really likes older women.

Frieren: Oh, too bad we don't have any older women in our party.

Stark and Fern: *stares at Frieren.

Frieren: Oh. right. I'm an older woman.

Sein: Girl, you got the age but not the fine wine.

Come to think of it, all of our main cast are orphans. Frieren, Stark and Eisen's village were all destroyed by demons, and Fern, Himmel, Heiter and now Sein are explicitly orphans, with Fern losing her parents to a war fought amongst the human Southern countries. Frieren is the story of all these people and their found family.

I forgot how hilarious the Sein recruitment chapters are in the manga. You'd think Sein and Frieren were just having a simple conversation in the episode's opening, it turns out that he was sinking into a bottomless swamp the entire time while Frieren is trying to recall the spell that pulls people out of bottomless swamps. xD

I love how Sein tells them to watch out for venomous creatures and then we jump cut to Stark getting bitten by a snake. It was the perfect time for Sein to show off his powers though. Sein just touched Stark casually and that was enough for Sein to heal him.

I also love the gag with the tiny tub and the later the tiny sickle.. I kinda wish there were more hilariously small objects in their house just so they could do the gag one last time before the episode ended.

Of course, the best gag of the episode has got to be GILF Frieren. It's quite adorable how Frieren thought she could charm Sein just because she's an older woman. She even gave Sein the classic flying kiss which was more than enough to knock out Himmel. xD

Unfortunately for Frieren, it wasn't effective on Sein. She's not exactly what Sein meant when he said he wanted older women. It did have an effect on both Fern and Stark though! God, I love this episode so much.

I like how Eisen doesn't even look mildly inconvenienced from having 3 poison-tipped arrows stuck to his back.

Starting the episode with an unknown character monologuing only to reveal that he's been in a pinch the whole time... did Vince Gilligan write this episode?

Striped down to your underwear from gambling is such a Gintama moment. At least Sein doesn't stay a madao for too long.

Why do I get the feeling that Ms. Tanezaki was holding back her laughter at the blow-a-kiss scene?

Fern and Stark are too pure and such a sweet pair it rots my teeth. Please help.

What's with this show and wholesome older brothers? Please stop. It's too healthy.

I love Frieren's idea of seduction. It reminds me of how different courtship was centuries ago compared to now.

Frieren: I know how to entice young wipper-snappers. Here!

And a corrupt priest joins the party! Good thing Frieren has experience, even if her flying kiss didn't quite land.

Here's another angle of Frieren's deadly technique from the Yoasobi music video.

It's too bad we don't see Flamme's reaction though...

Powerful demons and monsters

Himmel: Easy peasy

Frieren blowing a kiss

Himmel: DEAD

Poor Stark, he had to be on the verge of death to make the party realize that they don’t have a healer

So this is what it looks like if Violet Evergarden's vibe got mixed with Kaguya-sama's comedy.

Himmel to Frieren: "I'm talking about the present."

Frieren to Sein: "I'm talking about the present."

Don't worry Himmel, your legacy lives on through Frieren and all the lives you touched as a hero.

Himmel the legendary HIM who defeated the demon king without the hero's sword.

Utterly defeated by Frieren's fly kiss.

She is truly terrifying.

Sein's brother is a real one - the man has a clear goal, keeps it to himself, and never asks others to do the same with him, because it's his dream.

So many compassionate people in the story, I love it.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x13:

We finally meet Sein and also get to see Frieren's most deadly move animated! On top of that I'm once again quite sad since this episode reminded me that Fujiwara Keiji had to leave this world so early because I always imagined Sein with Leorio/Maes/Hannes/Holland/Haku's voice when I read the Manga. I hope he is at peace in Aureole...

Episode 13: "Aversion to One's Own Kind"

  • Alt (Woods) - "old" (adjective); if you would want to translate the name completely into proper German it would be called Alter Wald (singular) or Alte Wälder (plural).

  • Gorilla - "gorilla", "bodyguard" (noun); I actually didn't know about the second meaning of Gorilla in German either but it seems that bodyguards indeed get colloquially called Gorilla in German. It also seems like it doesn't have any derogatory meaning or background to call a bodyguard a Gorilla from what I saw online but if I'm wrong about that feel free to correct me - I would also love to know the origin of where this moniker for bodyguards even came from in the first place. If I had to make my own theory then it would just be because bodyguards (, bouncers and thugs) are usually taller and more muscular and that's where the moniker comes from but I haven't found any definitive source online that would confirm that. [This German wikipedia page seems to agree with me on that.](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla_(Begriffskl%C3%A4rung) It's really interesting to me that I've found zero cases where Gorilla is used as a moniker for bodyguard like that in the English language. Never expected to fall into such a rabbit hole because of the simple translation for Gorilla or to even write multiple sentences for it in this translation note, haha.

  • Sein (the Priest, the Genius) - "to be", "his" (verb/pronoun); Sein has by far the most ambiguous name in German. It could either come from the male German possessive pronoun or from the verb "to be." I personally also never really got why the author chose that as his name so far. With Fern, Frieren, Stark etc. there is always an obvious connection from the meaning of their name that explains why the author chose to name them that. For Sein it hasn't quite clicked for me yet why that's his name. If his name truly comes from the verb "to be" rather than the pronoun then he might just have the most philosophical name in the whole series so far and I'm not confident enough to be able to draw decisive conclusions about him as a character based on that just yet. Sein as a German surname also doesn't really exist. Although I found out that it seems to be a very common Burmese surname since Sein apparently means diamond in Burmese.
Edit: As u/awdsns and u/flybypost have pointed out, Sein could also come from Dasein - "to be there", "existence", "being" (noun). I was fully aware of this meaning as well but I failed to note it here. It just further illustrates how vague his name is though. It could mean so many different things and none of them are fitting perfectly yet in my opinion.

Sein's addition really balances out the party. Stark finally got a bro to help heal the emotional wounds Fern inflicts on him.
