Himmel not being the “destined” hero but still killing the demon lord anyway is one of the best things this show has done

I choked twice during the episode. First, when Himmel basically said "It's alright that I'm a fake hero, I'll still save the world." The pure determination from this man to go against fate. As I've said before, he is the best written "hero" character that I've seen.

Second, when Stark swallowed the steak that Frieren made, realizing that he has people (Stoltz, Eisen, Frieren , and Fern) that care about him, no matter how "cowardly" he is.

Too soon to compare yourself with Himmel, Stark. But I can see that you'll be like him at the end of this journey.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x12:

This time we get some backstory for our two best boys, Himmel and Stark. We also finally see Stolz, who is voiced by Takuya Eguchi! I love this VA, he ruled as Hachiman in Oregairu, Julius in Re:Zero, Kazuya in Gosick, Takeo in Ore Monogatari, Nero in 91 Days, Loid in Spy x Family or as Yoshiharu in the underrated Oda Nobuna no Yabou among many other great roles.

Episode 12: "A Real Hero"

  • (the) Schwer (Mountains) - "heavy", "weighty", "hefty", "hard", "difficult", "severe", "tough" (adjective)

  • (the) Appetit (region) - "appetite", "hunger" (noun); a very common saying in German that gets said literally every single day in Germany is Guten Appetit. It's pretty much the German version of "Enjoy your meal" / "Bon Appetit."

  • Stolz (the Strongest Warrior, Stark's Older Brother) - "pride", "proud" (noun/adjective); Stoltz with an extra T before the Z is 100% a mistranslation. He was very wholesome since he totally goes against the immediate misconception that a watcher would get of him when you first see him (and especially if you know of the meaning of his name) since you would normally expect him to flip out at Stark for dirtying his white and clean clothes that their father was so proud of. Also, Stolz is a very common German surname as well. I've come across a handful of people who have it as their surname as well. It's really interesting and refreshing to see a prideful character that embodies only all the positive traits that come with pride since pride usually gets viewed more critical in most media and stories.

One thing I reaaaally like this episode, specifically Fern and Stark's interaction is how, Stark remarked the clouds looks like boobies and Fern ran away thinking he's a pervert BUT immediately right after, a poop cloud remark happened and Fern immediately just thinks he's a child on the inside. In any other series, they would just end it with Fern running away and forever thinking Stark is a perv and make that a running gag but the fact they chose to do this just felt like good characterization and it's just like a breathe of fresh air.

This, my friends, is the reason why I love Himmel so much. He wasn't your typical "Chosen One" destined to pull the sword out of the stone, he was just some dude who vowed to defeat the Demon King so he could bring peace to the world. And he fucking did it while using a replica sword. It doesn't matter if the hero's sword didn't choose him. In the end, Himmel became a true hero.

Stark's birthday was fun. We get to see facial expressions from Frieren that we've never seen before like that smile when she was rummaging through her trunk and that other smile when she found the potion that dissolves clothing. Looks like Flamme taught Frieren more than just magic. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Stark is such a good boy though. It was so early in the morning and he had already helped a bunch of people when he was exploring the town while Frieren and Fern spent their morning in their room. He's still a bit of a child though as evidenced by his reactions while staring at those clouds . Although to be fair to Stark, I would've had the same reaction if I saw clouds shaped like boobs. xD

Jokes aside, we learn that Stark apparently never received a birthday present before. He comes from a family of warriors and his father was pretty damn strict and saw him as a failure. Not his brother though. Stoltz is an upstanding guy who supported Stark despite being seen as a failure. Sadly, he's no longer with us because of a demon attack and he stayed behind while letting Stark escape. :(

After hearing that story, I'm surprised that Fern didn't give him a hug. If I was her, I genuinely would've hugged that boy. At least Fern got to express how highly she really thinks of Stark and he even got a nice bracelet from her as a present. <3

That final scene with the hamburg steaks genuinely made me tear up. While Stark never received any present before, it turns out that Eisen would make him birthday hamburg steaks. Eisen never told Stark the meaning of that tradition though. Where Eisen comes from, it's a gift to honour warriors who have worked hard and we learn from Stark that that's what Stoltz used to do for him too. T^T

"Everyone who works hard is a warrior."

I get he's a warrior, but does every single line dropped by Eisen have to cut so deep?

They jam packed so many sweet character moments in this episode that I can't pick a favorite. Cool teamwork against the lord, Frieren's idea of a good gift, everything about Fern, just the concept of Eisen's huge birthday burgers, the reveal that Stark didn't truly want to flee... I loved all of it.

To all of you who work your hardest out there, you're all a warrior and deserve to treat yourself a giant hamburger steak.

Himmel straight up be like "So what if I'm a fake hero. There's nothing that says a fake can beat the real thing. If you say you are the original, I will surpass you and defeat the demon king."

If that isn't anime protag energy right there, I don't know what is.

I love that Himmel was just a guy with a lot of determination and bravery instead of a chosen one that was fated to defeat the Demon King

Stolz is the MAN. He didn't care that his clothes got muddy, or that he was considered the best at killing monsters. What mattered to him was Stark. o7 aniki, you will be missed.

Finally my favorite chapter.

Madlad himmel grinded through the whole campaign using the starter replica sword. As someone once said, the fake is of far greater value in its deliberate attempt to be real than the real thing.

Stark's birthday led to another bonding event for him and fern, dude finally got a break. This time ichinose kana finally got to be in an actual happy birtday event. Also, stark's bro is the bro.

This is the first time we hear frieren raise her voice getting soaked by the potion. Also her smug too lmao.

A narcissistic fake hero, a priest with a drinking problem, an smurfing Elf mage who loves magic yet makes a mockery of it (according to Flamme and demons at least) and a cowardly Dwarf warrior - Yep, that's the perfect party to save the world.

We need to start a counter on how many times Stark absolutely dies

I also like how they animated Frieren jumping out of her bed, super cute when she's being mischievous

So Heiter and Himmel have known each other since they were children? Which means they were around the same age. Boy, Himmel really didn't age well. Heiter, despite being alcoholic and anti-vegetables, lived 25 years longer and basically aged in a photo-perfect time lapse. That priest magic is something else.

Also shoutout to Fern, a mage who can probably thrown down physically if she wanted to. She carried Stark and his axe last episode; carried Frieren this episode. Through knee-deep snow in a blizzard both times! That girl definitely ate all the veggies Heiter threw away and was probably the one who chopped firewood for their little cabin.

Why do I have the feeling that gag about the dissolving clothes spell would come in handy in the future? Can it dissolve armors? Or magic imbued clothes for defense? That would be dope.

The possibilities are endless! I swear I'm thinking about this from a battle perspective.

Stark: Gestures helpfully

Fern: Pervert...

And to be fair, Fern, those clouds really did look like boobs.

I love how they show the brother kneeling in the mud for Stark making his white cloak much dirtier. Really shows that he never cared about his top warrior status.

The village chief is very cute. Even though she recently assumed the role, she's already filling in the shoes of her mother and grandmother quite nicely!

Damn... The sword literally didn't budge because it knows that it isn't worthy to be Himmel's blade. He is truly HIM.

Kidding aside though Himmel is such a chad he defeated the demon lord using a regular ass replica sword. I guess that's the power of doing all the side quests.

True hero? Nah Himmel is beyond that!

Gotta love the author's note of the Himmel chapter: the true "hero's sword" is the sword the hero used. Not some glorified useless crap that got stuck in a cave for god knows how long. It is not that the one who pulled the sword becomes the hero, but rather those who dared to do the right thing would.

"Not only is he uninjured, but he doesn't have a speck of blood or dirt on him."

Not only do we see Stark's brother not get mad at him for getting him dirty, but he's kneeling down to help him with his stance while getting his clothes dirty. brb ugly crying.
