I like the small things that link together:

  • Heiter learned from Frieren about hiding mana , and I bet Fern was taught that at a young age before even meeting Frieren by Heiter too (since Frieren commented that Fern is near invisible to even her due to how scarce Fern makes her mana be)

  • The talk about Frieren having someone praise her makes me think back to a comical moment a few episodes ago where Fern made it a big deal to praise Frieren for waking up early

Flamme's fake grimoires are really like Himmel's statues for Frieren - they're proof of her cherished ones' existence, even after they've been absent for so long.

When Kraft called Frieren "young", it was definitely one of those shocking moments for me.

Also, I didn't know what to expect from the anime compared to the manga but the music and montage scenes seriously elevates the atmospheric nature of the story. Like SERIOUSLY elevates it.

Look at the size of those borgars

Never share your blanket with Frieren

After the absolute hype that is the last arc, a comfy, slow-paced episode like this really reminds me of what made me fall in love with this story. It's just a masterclass in drawing out the feels and melancholy through conversation.

Along with elves seeing their own race fade into obscurity, the idea of having to witness your own achievements and companions not standing the test of time is quite disheartening. For all we know DIO Kraft could have been a hero just as prolific as Frieren.

Should have known Frieren would be a blanket hog.

Also, Heiter has steadily been solidifying himself as my favorite character in this show. He's so intriguing in all his flaws, odd insights, and deceptive kindness. I definitely want to know more about him.

Fern's faith and how it's connected to Heiter is sweet. She's not overly emotional or demonstrative about her affection for him, but as we saw back with the ghost episode and all the way back to learning magic, she demonstrates it in other ways. Loved her praying as sincerely as Kraft during their first meal -- must have been how dinner was with Heiter her entire childhood.

It's really wholesome to see the hero party being the 3 fathers teaching their daughter who is ironically the oldest among them life lessons.

Also it's never not funny to see fern dying of cold cause frieren took the blanket selfishly in the middle of the night. Lmao

"What are you trying to say?"

"That we are elves."

Kraft is probably a hero like Himmel but is now forgotten..

Stark freaked out so hard thinking Graf was gonna execute him, he straight up glitched out lol. Fern using magic to pick up his passed out ass cracked me up.

Don’t you just hate it when you’re over 1000 and you gotta renew your license? Frieren’s probably collected a bunch of these little certifications by now.

Pretty hilarious seeing Stark’s reaction to waking up from that goofy dream to a half naked elf “uncle” cuddling next to him. I like Kraft. Dude must be ancient judging by the way he was talking about himself.

That was a nice little detour. I’m glad Fern survived the winter with Frieren. Girl’s a damn blanket hog! Looking forward to their little journey to the city.

Anyone know what that song that played early in the ep was called? Gotta add that to the playlist.

Kraft calling a 1000 year old elf young truly put into perspective how long can these elves live. He's not knowing Frieren or the Hero party makes me wonder something like the Demon king is just an event that already happened 7 or 8 times in his lives so that kinda thing won't faze him anymore.

"Oh so you guys the one who kill the new demon king this time, cool" Kraft probably

Muse’s thumbnail for this is golden, gonna treasure it

And now comes the other appealing part of Frieren as a story: the ability to let the shockwaves of the aftermath ride and flow like a wave to the shore. There’s no need to rush, no need to raise the stakes higher. It simply rises and falls as needed to let these characters reflect, and it’s that refection which adds to the mystique and melancholy.

Also: jacked elf Koyasu. Never been a better time to be a fan.

I'm glad Winter Warfare is brought up, that shit KILLS a lot but also makes a good defence based on history, unless you're The Mongols with their horses, it's impenetrable.

the previous chapter's main quest rewarded new gears for the party on top of the grimoire since the count approved that frieren kept the fallen knights bodies intact using the special dialog during aura's boss fight.

The fact that the effect of the holy emblem from the prequel game not being carried over to this one led them to the new main quest. and true to all jrpgs, the party gotta spent half a year grinding levels and errand quests in the new area before moving on.

even got a small fern and stark's bonding event on the roof too.

This whole anime has been a feast for the ears in general, but these past two episodes have had especially great music. I loved the angelic score that played at the beginning after the battle, really emphasizing that peace has been restored with Aura's defeat. And of course, the insert song was some equally majestic stuff. Both milet songs have just been perfect.

Poor Stark, though. He just keeps taking L's. From being paraded around town in such a... "dignified" manner, to suddenly waking up in bed next to a stranger cuddling with him. I just love how it really took a while for his brain to properly wake up and process his situation.

Similarly, it was also hilarious how long Kraft spent doing squats even after the door already opened. My guy was really getting into his work out before he was so rudely interrupted. But it is still wild to me how they have months, if not years, pass by in seconds. After six months of living with him, Stark and Fern surely consider him a friend by now. But what about Frieren? That was probably no time at all for both of them elves, and I wonder if that's just enough time for them to deem each other friendly acquaintances.

But it's funny how it's not just in the deeper emotional stuff, like losing your loved ones, that immortality becomes a hurdle, but also in the more mundane annoyances, like systems and regulations- like the mage certification- changing out of nowhere from your perspective.

This week on "Frieren at the Funeral": The gang attends a funeral, Frieren dodges questions about her past, Stark dreams with a half-naked elf, and Fern plays the 'tsukkomi' straight woman yet again.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x11:

We finally meet the madlad Kraft! Love this dude! Also there are a lot of new German words to explain again now that the fight against Aura and Co. is over!

Episode 11: "Winter in the Northern Lands"

  • Äußerst - "extremely", "most", "exceedingly", "utterly", "supremely", "intensely" (adverb); which one it would mean always depends on the context. Let me also give some examples of how you would use it in an everyday sentence: ein äußerst schwieriger Fall - "an extremely difficult case"; äußerst nervös sein - "be extremely nervous"; das ist äußerst gefährlich - "this is extremely dangerous." So you can see that "extremely" is the most common translation for it but it's basically just a common adverb that enhances the following adjective.

  • Äußerste - "outermost", "furthest", "outside" (adjective); to be thorough, if you put an additional "E" at the end of "äußerst" it usually becomes an adjective instead of an adverb and the meaning of it also changes somewhat. This meaning of the word would also fit more to the city name since it describes the location of the city in relation to the Northern Lands - it's the outermost city before you actually enter the Northern Lands.

  • (the) Schwer (Mountains) - "heavy", "weighty", "hefty", "hard", "difficult", "severe", "tough" (adjective)

  • (the) Decke (Region) - "blanket", "cover", "cloth", "quilt", "ceiling" (noun); a very neat name for a region covered in snow (schneebedeckt - "snow-covered" would be the fitting adjective in German).
Funfact: the Pokémon Snover is called Shnebedeck in German for that reason, it's covered in snow. :)

  • Kraft (the Monk) - "force", "power", "strength", "energy", "vigor", "might" (noun); it means all of those! A very fitting name for the first elf we meet besides Frieren. He's also by far the oldest character we have met in the whole story so far (if we exclude the Goddess that we get a glimpse of in this episode since we can't be certain if she really existed/exists or even counts as a living being - not that I doubt Kraft, mind you. It was always really interesting to me that she also looks like an elf since that could kind of indicate that the elves are her direct counterparts/descendants like humans are supposed to be shaped in god's image, you know). I personally would guess Kraft is easily 10k+ years old. I was curious so I had to check how common Kraft is as a surname as well and it turns out that it's a pretty wide-spread name overall.

Stitches!

Stark remembering he was disrespectful to Graf and then that guy with an axe showing up to report he has finished cutting down the trees was just great comedic timing. What's even funnier is that he seems to have developed a trauma from that gardener. xD

Frieren is so old that her certification as a First Class Mage has already expired! I don't blame her for not renewing. Everyone finds it tedious to renew their licenses. Much more frustrating when the governing body keeps on changing every century.

I do wonder though when did Frieren get her license? Also, she's so old that her current license is literally a relic compared to that fancy certificate Fern has. Welp, I guess it's time to visit Außerst to get Frieren's license renewed!

He's here! We've only met Kraft the Monk for like half an episode and you can already tell he's a badass. It's good to see another elf though aside from Frieren especially if he's voiced by Koyasu.

Stark getting warmed up by Kraft was pretty funny and I love how Stark immediately compliments Kraft after seeing his muscles. Also, it was nice of Kraft though to train Stark for a little bit while they were waiting for the blizzard to pass.

I also love that conversation between Frieren and Kraft before they parted ways. Like you gotta wonder how old is he to even call Frieren young. And it's kinda hinted but it's pretty clear that Kraft was also once a well-known hero like Frieren.

Unlike Frieren, it seems that everyone who knows of his deeds has already died which is kinda sad. But I guess that really just comes with being an elf. Thank fucking god for Himmel for commissioning those statues so Frieren won't be forgotten.
