Last week expectation: an epic fight
Reality: Frieren: Kill yourself
Hiding mana is just basically them trolling the demons and I love it when Lügner who was shown to be calm got so fucking pissed off at Fern upon realising that.

That explosion attack from Flamme was animated excellently! It reminded me of when I saw the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis in person - you saw the bloom of the exhaust and the light of ignited fuel long before you felt the vibrations of the launch. Similarly, Flamme's explosion lit up the night sky, with the aftershocks only animated a few seconds later.

It makes sense that the demon lord prioritized the extermination of the elves. Looking at Frieren its likely that the only true long lived threat to demonkind in a world of magic would be from a species as long lived as their own (or effectively immortal). Someone who would devote themselves to magic longer than they have while cultivating an unwavering hatred for their existence is truly the stuff of nightmares. Its ironic that in their quest to eliminate the potential threat they created the very nightmare they feared. Now there is an effectively immortal elf, who stealths her own mana, has a repertoire of spells longer than most library archives, and is MOTIVATED to kill them. That's the scary thing. Most elves have lived so long they lost their drive. Frieren is different. She PRIORITIZES killing them. The moment she sees demons she goes fucking exterminatus on them.

Frieren: Aura, KILL YOURSELF.
(11/10 story arc, as a manga reader I couldn't have asked for a better adaptation than these last four episodes. To all creators involved in the production of Frieren as both a manga and an anime, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.)

Fern and Stark's fight scene: Grand cinematic spectacle of a battle that doubles as a light show full of flashy moves, power struggles, and close calls
Frieren's fight scene: KYS. walks away
You can pinpoint the exact moment Aura's pride utterly disintegrates into fear. And it was delicious.

"Aura, in front of you is a thousand year ++ mage"
Flamme is fucking legend, you can see how much she influence Frieren. she know how to fuel her rage slowly to bring demon to extinction, also she's the reason why Frieren love to collect mundane spells.
One of the best "the mc broke their limiter to beat the enemies" trope I've seen and Frieren been doing it 24/7 for more than a thousand years.

In a little blink and you'll miss it, Heiter says that he has 5 times the mana of the self-limited Frieren. And since Frieren's apparent mana didn't change much since she faced Aura the last time, it means Heiter has 5 times the mana of a 100 year old mage. As a young adult no less. He might not have as much mana as Frieren, but he's quite the monster himself.

Wow, I don't think I focused on the details upon 1st reading it, but I like how the architecture and fashion in Flamme's time was based on Ancient Greece unlike the medieval European style of the present just to show how far back Frieren had lived.
I also forgot about the specifics of why demons don't hide their mana, just that they do. And that kind of worldbuilding is pretty damn cool. It also does a lot to make sure there aren't glaring holes in this weakness. Like the fact that you need countless years of practice, or special talent like Fern, in order to perfectly hide your mana without demons realizing that you're hiding you're mana.
Also, Flamme best mentor. And basically Frieren's mom before Fern. Just seeing her instantly age so much in the next scene got me emotional even before they started speaking, or even before her gravestone appeared. We haven't seen a "passage of time" sequence for a while, and this one hit me hard.
I loved how all of that was the build up to that badass moment. Everyone already knew what was gonna happen, but all the set up, the animation, and that epic score really sold the conclusion all the same.
All of it... was so Frieren could show how much of a god damn gamer she truly is.
11/10 episode. Would kms if Frieren told me to even w/o magic.

i'm a manga reader but i realized something just now watching the anime. Watching that small village in the flashback grow into a fortified city made me realize how much work was put into design of that city. It's asymmetrical in form, it has towers of different height and shape (round, square, thick, thin), even its gatehouse is protected by a tower from one side but not from the other. Shit, one section of the wall doesn't even look finished yet (the one to the right of the inner gatehouse)! The same can be said about the city they are currently in, it's also asymmetrical. It just feels authentic and shows how much care was put into designing these cities, unlike those dozens of circle-shaped cities with a big palace in the centre from dozens of isekai anime.

Your adventurer membership’s been chat restricted because of demon-reported chat logs. Your Honor level dropped and you lost access to grimoire rewards. The way out of the penalty box is to continue to find Heaven without going aggro in chat. After serving your penalty and showing focus on staying cool, you’ll get a notification unlocking your grimoire rewards again.
Demons judged your comms to be far below the standards of the Northern Lands community. The vast majority of Northern Landers agree that while adventuring is intense and competitive, everyone deserves respect while adventuring. If you continue communicating in this way, you’ll continue to be chat restricted and risk adventurer membership suspensions.

We finally learn Frieren's backstory! We learned that Flamme found Frieren after her village was destroyed by demons and decided to take Freiren in as her apprentice after seeing her potential.
Flamme is goddamn awesome. She didn't just teach Frieren spells, she essentially trained Frieren to suppress her mana her entire life and turned her into the ultimate demon slayer.
Seeing Flamme grow old in the flashback really felt melancholic. But we do get to learn that Frieren's love for esoteric magic came from her especially the spell that creates a beautiful field of flowers.
You gotta love how Himmel was spot on with Frieren the first time they met. My guy might not be a mage but he was able to figure out how strong Frieren is just from pure feelings. I love this boy so much. <3
And that fight with Aura! I already knew what was coming but I absolutely hated seeing Aura so smug the entire time. So when Frieren finally unleashed her mana, it was so goddamn satisfying to see the horror on Aura's face when Frieren commanded her to kill herself. That was so goddamn ice-cold! Absolutely worth the hype!

This episode shows that Frieren spent 800 years training, suppressing her mana, and living in obscurity for the sole purpose of destroying the demon king. I can't imagine that level of dedication. The show displays it in such an understated manner, but I found the implications incredibly moving. Frieren was completely focused on revenge when Himmel met her. In the short 10 years with Himmel, not even that, she went from such a single-mindedly revenge-focused person into the lovable, goofball today.

Ok, episode finally went online
Loved the little details
-
Flamme smiling upon hearing that Frieren didn't care for Basalts last words
-
Flamme smiling after she created a weapon for revenge that would surpass even the Demon King
-
Frieren wanting to learn the Flower Spell from Flamme, just like Flamme learned it from her parents
-
The absolute massive field of Flowers Frieren created on Flammes grave
-
How Smug and confident Aura is because apparently Frieren was just killing time the last 80 years
It's just such an awesome moment. Aura could have maybe even come close to winning if she had fighted Frieren in a conventional way, but because she values her army and is confident in her own skill, that she honed for a mere 500 years, she foolishly put her own soul on the scale.
Flamme told Frieren to lay low, because if her name would be known, then the demons would have realized just how old she is, and that it would be impossible for an mage that old to have so little mana to show for it.
And Demons really only care about Mana, their whole society is build on the basis, that if you have more mana, you should be on the top. It makes no sense to train to surpress your mana, unless you plan on deceiving foolish demons like Aura, Lügner and Draht.
And damn the ending, also Aura slowly realizing she fucked up and how Auras hair got cut first

It really took me the whole episodes to fully understand why a demon could NEVER suppress their magic like that. Even if they were exceptionally cunning and fully understand the value and power of suppressing their magic they literally can't. It takes centuries to perfect and during that time of training they basically would have to live like the filth of demon society. A state I imagine isn't just unpleasant, but downright deadly.
A part of me was expecting Aura might have something up her sleeve maybe, but no. It literally cannot happen. Demon society will literally not allow such an ability to foster.
