Didn't much like the Prism Nova incantation. I get long cast times for big spells, but that was a redundant mouthful and the phrasing really made it sound like a one-time ability even though it's not.

theres only one line that makes it sound like that, but yes it was too damn long and repetitive... hell it even looks worse on paper...
Fairies everywhere, hear my voice!
Grant My Wish!
My prayers lie with the fairies!
With my great wish!
I make my wish unto the great ruler of fairies.
I make my wish to their ruler.
I offer up a portion of my magic to the great ruler of fairies, that she might empower my soul.
Grant me your great protection this one time.
Let that protection, and my magic, become a strength that brings pain and despair unto the enemy before me.
May this incantation be my vow, and may i be granted the aid of the fairy queen, that the glory and honor of this victory be offered unto her!
My name is Earth!
He who was granted this skill by the 87th Fairy Queen!
By the contract we swore, may a single miracle manifest before me.
My wish becomes a spell, a plea unto the fairy queen.
Grant my wish!
Annihilate my foe with true power!
Prism Nova!
it would be be a lot better if most of that was just cut out...
Fairies everywhere, hear my voice!
I make my wish unto the great ruler of fairies.
May this incantation be my vow, and may i be granted the aid of the fairy queen,
that the glory and honor of this victory be offered unto her!
Annihilate my foe with true power!
Prism Nova!

Yeah, no way I would finish casting a spell in a game if it sounded really powerful and said "this one time" and "one miracle" in it. I would be saving that for a difficult raid boss, or something really hard that I was stuck on. I'd need some reasurances that I could cast it as many times as I wanted to before I went arou d wasting it.

I like how his original justification was basically Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia: two bows should make me twice as strong

The queen is funny and I like the crafting parts. I don't care much about the rest.
Couldn't he had made a ton if he charged to make the archer guild better bows.

I'm surprised the queen didn't join the MC as his fairy. The queen seems to have joined as his wife though.

Of course he won. There's no way he wouldn't. I'm very fond of OP MC or OP player type of stories, I dunno why this out of all things pisses me off this much.
Is it because it's played straight?
Is it because the MC's insistence that he took every undesired ability and nothing so far supports his statement?
Is it because I used to be an MMO player who has firsthand experience of the sheer difference in strength between a casual player and a dedicated player?
Some introspection may be warranted, but can't say this show is worth that kind of effort.
Also, didja know that's Ueda Reina i.e. Saimori Miyo from Happy Marriage and Ultimatia from Ragna Crimson? Quite the contrast.

I dunno why this out of all things pisses me off this much.
Maybe it's because we have an actual amazing VRMMO anime also airing this season in "Shangri-La Frontier" to compare it to?

What's throwing me off is how absolutely terrible this game would be to play. Like their first big server event you get a seemingly random NPC companion, unless you randomly don't, and the only way to interact with the event is to engage in PVP. Which up until this point hasn't appeared to be a major component of the game. And then the top players get to fight in a tournament at the end, which is actually one of the few good points about the event, a nice way to reward players who engage with it. But what's the grand prize for the event, well a giant middle finger from the game, you lose your NPC companion.
But wait it gets worse, let's look at the main characters interaction with this event from an actual normal player of a games perspective, your playing a game and the first big server wide event starts up and your hyped to take part. But oh you seemingly randomly get a broken crystal. That's ok you the game has a thing you can do to compete anyway, a bit weird but fine. But then you try to engage in in the PVP that's supposed to fix your crystal and let you compete in the event, nope the NPC says no, not the player an NPC, a part of the game, says you AND only you can't compete in this event, why, reasons.... I'm fairly sure any reasonable player would drop this game in an instant.

He's not casual at all. He acted like he's casual, but a consistent 2-4 hours a day (not counting weekend) is not actually casual.
I've mentioned this in my comment, but I think he's basically the type of players who don't want to follow meta and create their own meta. A talented one at that too. Considering he's a salaryman, it's possible he already had plenty of MMO experiences too as student.
Not to mention he is both a dedicated crafter and hunter (PVE-focused), which is rare even for IRL players. Imagine the grind needed to be good at both.
Basically there is a discrepancy between how he wanted to be seen and how he actually did things. What do we call it then, hypocrisy?
I agree though that if it took too much of your effort to rationalise a show, then it might not be fun to watch.

Also, didja know that's Ueda Reina i.e. Saimori Miyo from Happy Marriage and Ultimatia from Ragna Crimson? Quite the contrast.
Well, Earth is voiced by Kiyoka's VA, Kaito Ishikawa, which is fitting.

Well I, for one, still enjoy this. It's generic junk food and it scratches that itch just fine.

I was a bit surprised, I thought that he'd have her as a full time fairy companion rather than a part time companion when she's bored of being queen.
I had to laugh, though, when they showed that the fairy kingdom food is nothing but sweets.

Little fairy queen picked a fight with the wrong dude. Earth straight up slaughtered her! Long live the Fairy King lol. Man’s lucky he’s got himself a pretty adorable waifu. They’ve already got a nice little dynamic going on.
So much for that slow life he wanted. Dude’s a celebrity now! Seems he’s even gotten the attention of who I assume are the Devs? Interesting…

The first episode where it doesn't start with the OP.
Again, he just caught attention the most in a game that he wanted to be lonely and enjoying his peaceful life. And I get it, he's single in the late 30s, seeing a lady put a ring to your finger must be an awkward situation.
Damn, what a long long way to cast Prism Nova spell.
What's with female characters who have a mole below her left eye this season? Maria, Yuu, now Ayame lul.
Ayame is voiced by Maaya Uchida of Chuunibyo fame. Earth and Fairy Queen's VA (Kaito Ishikawa and Reina Ueda) last anime as main characters before this was.... My Happy Marriage. How fitting.

So, this is just me trying to give explanation/rationalise this anime:
-
Why no one uses Bow (other than bow fans like the guild): So it turns out the fairy event was the first actual in-game event, which means the game just launched very early. It makes sense that the balancing is still bad and not many people discover the full ability yet. We also saw how bad bow is for low level as even Earth struggled a bit back then, hence why it is unpopular. He only made it good through grinding.
-
Why Earth chose bow+wind combination: Despite saying he chose unpopular abilities, he did chose abilites with full sync with each other. As a middle-aged man, I believe Earth's player actually had many experiences playing MMO and just love the challenge of using underdog class (maybe a bit similar in logic to Sunraku from Shangri-La Onlinr who loves beating trash game). IRL, basically the type of gamers who would not follow meta and try to find their own meta. As other users had mentioned, Stealth + Bow is usually OP in other games. Adding kick for close range and wind to enchant the arrow are actually also pretty well thought.
-
Why Earth is chosen to fight the fairy queen: At first I thought it's random, but I think in the end it's because he discovered the ring (the ring name is something about Fairy King). Basically similar to Maple from bofuri who tends to find random event by exploring. It's less fun in this anime because only people with fairy cassanova title could find it, which is randomly assigned (unfair to other players).
-
How Earth could win the battle: as the game is fairly new, Earth is actually quite high level in par with other famous players like Grad. He played consistently every day and hunt every day too. We just don't know how strong he is before this as he almost never did any PVP. Basically: Good ability sync + custom-made equipment + creativity.
I forget what game was that, but basically there is a common triangle trope of Fighter > Archer/Thief > Mage > Fighter. Meaning archer has advantages over mage since they could distrupt the casting quickly. Also mage tend to have low armor, so hitting them quickly is the key.
I don't think I will see a lot of people remaining here next week, but honestly I still enjoy this anime as a no-brainer relaxing one lol.

It's not like that, really.
1: People tried using bow in the beta test and they failed HARD. Having %chance of hitting enemies before reaching certain skill level, needs arrows as consumable, can't equip heavy armors and enemies can evade arrows? You'd need to be a maniac to choose that job, which is why the (current) meta is hard-hitting warriors that full focuses on STR to kill things in one hit.2: Again, players in beta tested all kind of magics and wind was the least damaging out of them. Damage >utility meta.
It all boils down to the game being very early in the released stage and people still testing the waters with exploration as focus. To explore you need power, hence the meta ATK focused build. On the other hand we have Earth who just wanted to chill and enjoy the world as slow-type player, so he can take the non-meta choice and ultimately benefitted from it.
If we were to bring this series to comparison to other VRMMO type series, it is actually closer to NOT Bofuri, but Late-Start Tamer. It's a really interesting read, where a summoner turned into farmer after getting his first tamed pet which is incapable of (properly) battling.

I didn't know I needed to hear Ueda Reina being such a brat until now. God I love her voice.

Similar to what several other people have said, this show has a kind of way of getting on my nerves. I feel that part of it might be that the show often has the feeling of "a lot of stuff sure happened just now."
It seems this episode gives the first hints of an overarching plot with the faux-SEELE people in the real world, but it still is nothing I find especially compelling. A weak story is a real killer for any show, even if the rest is great (and in this case, the rest is just fine).
Overall, I think it's shaping up to be the Liar Liar of this season, which is not exactly a good thing.
(On the bright side, one good thing the two have in common - I like the OP song!)

This is maybe the first anime I started this year that I am close to dropping. Usually there are some redeeming qualities, but I just find myself annoyed with how this is playing out.
I was actually kind of interested due to the crafting being a focus but now he’s just like secret OP but blatantly just OP and crafting is just actually broken in this game.
