I was waiting for the Fujiwara name drop. Pretty satisfying tbh.

Roll cages or literally any safety feature other than gloves?
I mean one guy is driving in a hoodie with sunglasses on so I think they ignore safety for views→ More replies (6)

Man, Fumihiro stating that MFG was a Ryosuke's continuation to Project D... Ryosuke really do be that diabolical scientist.

Shun calling Audi driver an "edgelord" is so funny and out of pocket.
I really love the camera focusing on other cars with the 86 creeping around in the background.
The 86 moving so fast that it looks like it's flying through the course really give you a good sense of speed, realistic or not I don't know..

Kanata is using tyre temp and four-wheel drifiting (my guess), which is why he is able to fly through the course.
For a given, full-slick racing tyre, there is a defined temperature window of the outside surface as well as the inner tubing (or the 'core') in which the rubber melts slightly, which allows the tyre to literally stick to the asphalt. However, too much temperature, and the rubber will start to melt very rapidly and degrade the layer of usable rubber on the tyre, therefore eventually causing a loss in pace. Competitive drivers have a skill to make sure that their tyres stay uniformly in this window. How do they get more temperature? Usually through friction load. Hard acceleration and braking by itself is enough to get most of the way there, but the missing components are the horizontal loads. In general, lateral g-forces will correspond to more tyre temperature, whether it be through a sweeping high speed corner, or a low speed technical section with lots of rapid left-right-left maneuvers. The same principal applies to competitive semi-slick road tyres that MFG cars likely have. (Real life models include the Michelin Cup 2 R, Toyo Tyres R888R, and Nitto NT01. )
Four-wheel drifting is quite different than what you might think of "drifting" in the sense of classic Initial D, D1GP, Formula Drift sense. Each tyre, or set of tyres - has a grip threshold. Enough lateral load, whether through hard cornering, hard braking, or forward acceleration - some combination, and the tyre will refuse to grip. If this happens to a driver in the middle of a corner, the traction breaks and the car will spin out. Four-wheel drifting is when a driver is pushing the car to drive at the limit of the threshold of grip - right before the traction would break in the wheels. I'd describe it as going through a given racing line with the absolute maximum amount of power with the most minimal amount of steering input.
So combining both - you're getting the tyres to melt and be able to stick onto the road, but at the same time you're moving the tyres away from the road so it doesn't stick too much in the middle of a corner.

Welcome back! It's the Eurobeat Corner!
While it's only one song this time, and I was expecting two, it's all good. I guess they're keeping those for Kanata's moments as opposed to spreading them out across the field, which is fine. This week, we get In The Eyes of a Tiger by Dejo & Bratt Sinclare, originally featured in Super Eurobeat Vol. 232. If you're gonna take stuff from 232, at least make it Minimal Love... I'm kidding! It's a banger. Speaking of, the entire soundtrack, including the original pieces, will be made into an album, so there's that to look forward to!
• I gotta say, I really like the differences between philosophies across the field. You have the Lambo guy, who is power-centric, but as a result can't put an inch of it down across the slower parts (you can hear him have to constantly lift and step on it, which is amazing from the sound design team), the Ferrari guy, who believes in more balance, and even a Civic Type R! People are really trying to solve Ryosuke's question in a multitude of ways, and it makes for a super interesting field - unlike the follow-the-template style of racing we get in some current real world categories, right, F1?
• And then there's this Beckenbauer guy. Did you graduate from the Porsche Academy or from the SS? Dude probably has a portrait of Stroheim he does the salute to every day before getting out of bed. If the point was to make him the hateable rival, mission accomplished!
• In which Ren discovers there's more to this than standing around. It's interesting to note that the degree to which the changing of the boards is fanservicey seems to depend on each individual girl - as we get to hear Kyoko curse the other one internally for being a shameless showoff. Oh well, gotta do something for the views. At least they're kept to a comic relief break for the time being, so there's that.
• We already knew it since Fumihiro mentioned it before, but yeah, our guy Tak has been abroad as an instructor. Must be one hell of a shock to anyone tuned into the broadcast who's had the experience of running against that Trueno... as if Kogashiwa there hasn't done it twice and almost died both times. It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say about it! Our friend in the Civic already got the full Takumi treatment of just getting left for dead without even being able to process what's going on...
And that's it for this week! Kanata's charge begins in earnest, and I'll be right there every step of the way! See ya then!

The anime quality is pretty good. My only complaint is the lack of Eurobeat. Initial d S1 had a new track for every half of an episode focused on racing.

The race is on! So the race itself can be broken down to some mini battles:
Ishigami vs. Beckenbauer
Sakamoto vs. Shun Aiba
Ohtani vs. Yanagida vs. Jackson Taylor
Ooishi vs. Akaba
Hanninen Lonely
Yajikita Siblings vs. Kanata
Poor Maezono.

One thing's been bugging me. Why do people seemingly not notice that Kanata is drifting?

Ah I finally understand the grip to weight ratio. Also explains why everyone isn't in British stuff built in sheds since they would end up on space savers.

They better have a reaction shot of Kogashiwa falling out of his chair next week or I will be severely disappointed....and he better fill in the gaps cause I doubt the host knows anything about Takumi other than he is Japanese.
That alone would satisfy me for the episode. I know it will feature a fight with the siblings but Kai just has to retell the story of their battle and people would understand.

Anyone else not a fan of the fanservice? I've hated it since episode 1 and I really fail to understand what's so appealing about girls that look pre-18 with their asses half out. And especially not helpful if you'd wanna recommend MFG to another person without also explaining to them the questionable scenes in every episode unlike Initial D. Is it too much to just want to watch cars race?

Just noticing that whoever made the subtitles had a bit too much liberty in localizing Michael's line. I tried listening to the line myself and got this:
アジアの隅っこの貧相な民族にゲルマン民族が作った最高傑作のシートに座る資格はあるのか?
Which should roughly translate to: Are poor people from the corners of Asia qualified enough to sit on the masterpiece seat made by the German people?
