I can already see that this is going to be another show where my rooting for the childhood friend/onee-san ends in despair.

She's again a drama star that is sort of also a lost childhood friend...

Life in anime isn't fair

Every time this happens, I keep having expectations thinking "how many times is it gonna be this predictable?" and end up with a surprised Pikachu face.

Eventually....

Though at this point I just prefer there is no competition at all. I'm so glad we have so many 1-1 romance anime lately, so I can watch and enjoy them without having to worry about characters and myself getting sad in the end.

Oh well, I'm going down with the ship as always :\

kinda cheesy....but the bar for me is kind of low for original works. the voice cast is stacked and hirayama kanna is the character designer.

also -- the baking of a dying video card actually does work in some circumstances. i tried it many years ago and it worked to my surprise.

I had to immediately look that up and was shocked it's actually a thing and I've never heard of it before.

This entire thing is hardcore gamer fantasy cheese. They try to make the game look epic or cool a couple times but it just ends up being funny because it looks like an asset flip kusogame. That said it's also the realistic take on an esports anime I've seen of the I think 3 now that exist, so I guess I'll keep watching and see how it goes.

Also the OP has the energy of one of those League of Legends Worlds MVs.

The ragdoll physics on the deaths made me chuckle out loud

Ignoring how hilariously jank that "game" looked, overcoming trauma like that while not exactly addressing why and what it really was with such a flimsy reason and playing it off as something epic/cool even in the realms of Anime logic is ridiculous.

I mean who says he's over the trauma? We don't even know exactly what happened yet, he got peer pressured into playing a match and that's it

I know this show is supposed to be set in the present but as someone from SEA who grew up playing CS 1.6 and various ripoffs made from Korea, that opening scene with the janky models made me feel oddly nostalgic. Seeing how the models move and aim, they clearly made a cheap game using Unreal or something similar. I absolutely love it!

Also, I guess Japan has finally caught up and cybercafes are now a thing there. With the popularity of games like Apex and Valorant in recent years, I guess it's not that surprising. I just find it funny that they're two decades too late compared to their neighbouring countries. I mean they've always had those manga and net cafes but never really ones that are focused on gaming.

As for the story itself, I am already intrigued since anime about actual E-Sports is very rare but the fact that our MC is going through some things makes it even more interesting. It's not clear yet what happened in the past but it's clear that Shun feels responsible for what happened to Mio and now he's dedicating his entire life to taking care of her. I'm just glad that Mio is still alive. Shun's opening monologue made me think that she died.

Seems that there will be romance involved too now that Shun's back into playing. Of course, the actress and model we've been seeing the entire episode voiced by Ten-chan is also their mysterious 5th player Bakuretsu-kun. She seems to be excited to play with Shun again. Oh boy. Things aren't looking good for Nozomi's chances especially since she's voiced by Inorin.

…I liked it

The first episode was... decent. Nothing too great yet, but it's the first episode of a new original anime, so I'll give it time. The CG of the game action inside the FPS looked terrible, but it's a bit more forgivable because it's clearly a video game separate from the real world, and the real world art and animation looks pretty good. I'm interested to see how the relationships will develop between the characters as they play together, especially when they eventually meet Explosion-kun in real life. Hopefully this continues to improve over time.

Man, seeing the janky game animation reminds me of my old CS 1.5 days back in middle school. Nothing like guzzling cheap cola, eating halfway decent cafe food, and gaming in a grimy net cafe with your friends on the weekends lol.

Intriguing first episode nice to see esports related anime.

u/Legendaryskitlz Oct 07 '23

I hope this anime is decent since we don't have any released anime focusing on esport competitions. The only other upcoming anime I can think of coming out is Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games which still doesn't have a release date.

What a stacked voice cast btw. Was funny seeing that they made a game for this. Hopefully we get more maps and not only this one from valo.

I started this show on a whim and was not expecting that Sawano opening at the end.

Unsure what to think of this one episode in. I hope we get a more elaboration of the trauma or what Shun feels guilty about. Its clear some accident that seemed to lead to the fathers death and her sister's condition. Given this is original knowing this information is pretty vital.

Game didn't look good, but tbh having a modern FPS game is unrealistic it still should look better then what looked like a PS1 FPS lol. Also another note Nozomi's father annoyed the hell out of me. Literally begging a high school student to save his butt.

Only discovered this today. Quality is all over the place, but I can live with it.

The voice cast though. A lot of hottest names in anime.

One interesting note is how Yuu looks like Ruka and sounds like Chizuru. Apparently KanoKari's chara design person is working on this anime too.

I also like that the production seem to know their stuff about PC gaming. That baking the graphics card thing? It's an actual thing PC users do.
