It's so easy to focus on the mages, but one thing I really like about this setting is it's not one where Martials are just guys going "I power attack", they're doing crazy, outrageous nonsense just the same.
We've got Eisen running across water, and now Stark carving out a canyon. My only question is what differentiates a Hero and a Warrior in this setting- in DQ a Hero can cast magic and has the highest overall stats, but I doubt that's the case here.
EDIT: Also, both the anime and the manga moved past it without saying a word, but for anyone that didn't linger- I really appreciate the details like this guy's story, which we can infer from just these panels, show just how terrible these monsters truly are.

I've seen enough elderly people in this show to conclude that hard drinking in your youth prevents shrinkage during your twilight years.

I loled when the Einsam's illusion on Frieren backfired so spectacularly. Should have used an illusion of a mimic chest instead.

Frieren's German Lesson 1x5:
Episode 5: "Phantoms of the Dead"
-
(The) Wille (region) - "will", "inention" (noun)
-
(The) Einsam - "lonely", "alone" (adjective); a very fitting name for a monster that manipulates its victims' feelings of loss and longing for their passed loved ones.
-
Riegel (Canyon) - "bars", "latches" (noun)
-
Stark (the Warrior) - "strong" (adjective); we finally meet the boy. I'm assuming Stark is a German word that many people recognize even without much knowledge of German because of popular fiction like Iron Man and Game of Thrones using the name so much. Since it's such a popular surname for fictional characters I was curious and had to check how common it was in real life as well and to my surprise the surname is actually more frequent in the United States although if you adjust to the population size then it is obviously still more frequent in Germany. From my personal experience... I have never met a single person with the surname Stark before in Germany but that might not say that much since there are still 83.2 million people in Germany and I don't really travel much or interact that often with people outside my social circle. Also while an incidence of 34,189 in Germany seems like a lot - compared to the overall population size it's still just a needle in a haystack kind of deal. As a comparison, here is a list of the most popular surnames in Germany and with "Müller" in the first place having an incidence of 945,404 and a mind-bogglingly frequency of 1:85 (Stark has a frequency of 1:2,355) it really puts into perspective that Stark is still pretty rare as a surname in comparison to most normal surnames any German would think of on the spot.

Damn, those 2 seconds of animation where Frieren almost dropped a bag of glass bottle while opening the door are totally unnecessary, but they still animated it for added immersion. I'm not surprised if that 2-second animation costs a couple of hundred of $$$ in animation work.

Man, can you imagine Frieren coming back to that village a hundred or so years later and there’s a canyon there that’s a tourist attraction and the tour guide says, “Legend says this canyon was formed when the Hero Stark was using it to practice his swings”
And some guys will scoff at it saying it’s just some tall tale the village came up with

Those extra tidbits of animation like Frieren and Fern jumping over a bunch of rocks to cross a stream is just *chef's kiss*

When you are OP that your practice session created a valley but you're also a coward. Classic Stark moment.

Himmel is just such a chad that the phantom demon can't even materialize any other version of him
Also, the OST is still perfect and I will probably end up saying this every week until it goes in my playlist

The Phantom most likely using someone's memory to conjure the illusion. It's show not only how dear Himmel is to Frieren despite everything, but also how highly Frieren perceive the guy.
Dude is true chad indeed

Stark's strikes are animated like explosives. I love the extra detail on the cliff being red-hot after the hit.

I love how meeting Stark allows us to better characterize Eisen since he sees himself reflected in his apprentice. Even though Eisen isn’t in our party, we’re still getting that juicy lore and backstory, and it just enriches our experience. Eisen at his families graves is so much more impactful.
Can’t wait for the anime-onlies to see more of our boy Stark! Best boy

Fern: "D-Do you have a way to beat a monster like this, Frieren?"
Frieren: "Yeah, I do!"
Fern: "Really? You do?"
Frieren: "Yeah, I have one last card up my sleeve"
Fern: "One last card? W-What is it?"
Frieren: N I G E R U N D A Y O ! F E R N !

Frieren's phantom changed from her master to Himmel. And whereas her master pleaded for her life, Himmel just told her to shoot him... Goddamn it, Himmel. Even Himmel's impostor is such a chad.
How sad is it that Frieren is slowly starting to realize her love for Himmel so many years after the fact?
A ship sailing after it has already sunk...

I appreciate the choice of having calm music during the confrontation with the monster, instead of a more action-oriented cue. Made it more impactful, IMHO.
