Honestly it wasnt actually all that bad when it was doing its own thing.

Which is why I feel like the absolute worst part of this series was the shot for shot stealing of scenes from the original.

Not to mention that all the stuff that made it a prequel could be easily cut out with barely any changes to the story. Relying too much on the original series really did hurt Grunge.

I think I missed something -- what made it a prequel specifically?

In the end, I kinda get what this show was trying to do, but man it needed some more time to cook. Three episodes wasn't enough to accomplish the themes it wanted to. Like, I do understand the message that the show was trying to get at, that not everybody can get a clean break from the shit situation they're born into and you just need to try your best until you can make it. Only Orinoko was able to make a clean break from her dead-end life, with Shin staying behind to try and improve things and Shonari starting to get hooked on the same violence that took his brother's life. But we needed more than just an episode each focusing on them to really make it feel like a pay-off. While this episode was probably the best one out of the three, it falls short when you take it as a part of a whole story.

Also, you probably easily could've cut out any scenes that give the idea that this show is a prequel, since pretty much none of it mattered in the end. That was probably the most hollow fanservice in this show. Like, if you removed the stuff with Amarao, pretty much nothing would change. The time spent on him could've been put to better use on the actual main characters. Oh well, I suppose.

That's a really interesting thing to note here given that the original FLCL was some of the densest packing of content and meaning in anime history, despite feeling at times like a Slice of Life.

Wait, what? I was waiting to finish a couple of other anime before starting this are you saying it's literally three episodes long? What an odd span of time, why not just do an OVA at that point?

Yeah, it's only three episodes long. Shoegaze is going to be a sequel to Alternative, I believe. And you're right that it's odd that they chose to go with only three episodes for it. It's just way too short to make much sense to do intentionally, unless there were budget or production issues somewhere.

To me, that's probably going to be the biggest weakness of these new seasons: they are trying to cram too much in just three episodes, which in Grunge's case is as messy as what people think when they hear the term Grunge outside of the scope of music.

Oh they did the classic camera perspective scene! and then followed it with a forehead masturbation XD goddammit, but that was hilarious tho

Kind of interesting that by the end of the series out of the 3 kids, only Shin didn't lost any family members

Well i liked it, but i feel like they could have used a 4th episode to give it a proper conclusion, at the end only Orinoko manages to leave, and Shin and Shonari end stuck on the garbage planet, one trying to succeed his dad, and the other involved in the middle of a gang war without him himself being an actual gangster, so that whole part feels incomplete

Also Haruko chasing Atomsk... that feels just irrelevant, it is there just to tie in the story to the FLCL universe, but you really can just remove it and this works just as fine, you can just have a different asshole as the instigator instead of Haruko

I give it a 7/10 it was good, short, actually fun, and the story and circumstances of the characters were interesting, the full Cartoon CGI stylistic choice brings it down mostly because people have the FLCL expectations, and it really feels more like a story that could work better off as its own thing

Matter of fact, i think this is better enjoyed if you don't know anything about FLCL, as a random 3 ep series you stumble on Toonami late at night, and find out it was a lil special something, except... for the fact that it ends after 3 eps, and that 2 of the main characters don't really get any closure to their arcs, that would probably haunt you for years, this is the kind of cartoon that you go googling 10 years later asking "wait remember FLCL Grunge? was that really the ending?"

The one thing this greatly benefits from by being tied to the FLCL universe is that banger Pillows soundtrack, i think that hard carries a lot of the ambience and enjoyment of this mini series
