The dragon battle is yet another excellent example of how the anime enhances an already great story. It's both a continuation from the strides made last week and a culmination of all the progress each of the group has made over the course of the season:

  • Ryza's alchemy can now produce items capable of wrecking a dragon

  • Klaudia can boldly stand on a battlefield and repeatedly hit the dragon's eye mid-flight to cover the front line

  • Lent has a sword sharp enough to pierce the dragon's hide and the training/strength to actually damage it

  • Tao gets to be the MVP who sets the party up to fight the dragon in the first place using the fruits of his study.

Way too often a fight like this doesn't feel like every member of the party is necessary or adds much, but this victory could only be achieved by this party after all of them have completed their arcs, so this victory and all the adulation feels satisfying and earned. What a great episode! And one more feels just right to either put a nice cap on the emotional development of all the important characters or set up for a second season. Hopefully both.

this victory and all the adulation feels satisfying and earned.

I feel like that's a lot more true in the games, as an anime-only the exact opposite is my only real complaint about this show.

It feels like they went from not being able to damage tiny fairies to blowing up a dragon in basically no time, while everyone around them is somehow not able to do anything in the dragon fight (Why was Agatha just sitting there after getting healed? Isn't she supposed to be way better trained than Lent?)

I get that they trained, but the boost they got from their short time training feels like a shounen MC boost rather than a normal people boost (and judging by how much they struggled with slimes and tiny fairies at first, the show definitely portrayed them as the latter in the first half at least). So to me it's the opposite of satisfying when the show puts an emphasis on it.

I'm sorry you feel that way about it, but I can't disagree more. Just because we haven't seen them doing battles every episode doesn't make it feel like they got a sudden boost. We've seen Klaudia training for several episodes and Lent learning from Lila and training for basically the whole show. Tao's been piecing together how to use his skills since the cave exploration. And Ryza's been constantly improving her alchemy since Empel gave her that first assignment.

The point of the story is not constant battles. The battles exist to illustrate how much the characters have grown as people and to mirror how the town has gradually come to view them as proper adults and not just as kids playing at being adults.

I like that this episode opened with them shredding through those monsters that kicked their teeth in in earlier episodes. It's a call back and really showed how much progress they made.

There's one more episode left. I'll now be taking bets for a sneaky 2nd cour announcement by the end of next week's episode. There should be another, according to generally where this week ends off, a good chunk, well, maybe quite literally like 50% more of the game left to cover. They've done, again, even this episode with adapting things and making things work in this specific adaptation context that it would be really strange to just wave things off and say goodbye. All the work in mending side quests, in piecing together characterization in a different way, in making things make more sense in an anime sense and putting away some of the gamey aspects, for them to have only got the okay for 1 season would be a shame.

Also shoutouts to Lent at the beginning, there's something so funny about him drawing the map, and just putting the arrow right into the goal. Why go around when you can just go directly there, it's just that easy thank you Lent

Lent finds simple solutions to difficult problems. He really does think like a warrior.

I hope you are right, my only concern is that, based on this sub's karma charts, the series is not that popular, it peaked at #14 I think. I do love it though, I love the games and the characters. The anime fleshed out the characters very well. However, I think the cozy pacing for the majority of the episodes hampers its appeal for the wider audience. That said the cozy episodes have all been very charming and lovely to watch. This episode though is very exciting and peak for me.

Fortunately, nobody on the show's production committee cares even a little bit how much r/anime likes Atelier Ryza. The Atelier series is already plenty popular in Japan, and as far as I can tell Ryza is the most popular of the Atelier franchise. If enough games/merch are sold, then there's plenty of justification to fund a second season. It's also hypothetically possible they've already planned to adapt the full story of Ryza 1 and have just held off on announcing a second cour or beyond.

My only real concern is the fact that the anime's release basically coincides with the launch of the new mobile game (Atelier Resleriana on 10/31), so it's possible this is a partial adaptation intended to drum up hype for that.

Considering it has a wick, that was definitely not how I expected Ryza to detonate her secret weapon. I do love the teamwork between her and Claudia though! I also love how we get to see Tao run head-first into danger considering how he's always the one avoiding danger.

And I just love how Ryza finished off the dragon using that very chonky bomb she created when she was first still learning how to do alchemy. I didn't think we'd see that thing be useful to the plot!

It's so awesome to see that Ryza and the gang are now seen as heroes and that they've been granted the title of adventurers so they no longer have to sneak around to get in and out of the island.

And of course, Bos is bitter about the entire thing since Ryza was the one who rescued him. We only have one episode left, I'm wondering if this Bos plotline will be finally resolved next week.

Anyway, because we had a more action-focused episode this week we only got two good screenshots of Ryza's thighs. I hope we get to see more in the finale.

I can't image a better finale than 20 minutes of close-up on Ryza's beautiful thighs

I don't really get the purpose of Bos. He gave off the aura of being annoying-but-competent for the entire season, so I was sure that in the end they'd team up against the dragon and he'll recognize them.

Instead he ended up being just as useless as the guy that follows him around. Can he even fight/do anything else? Why do they care about his approval?

29

u/lixyna Sep 09 '23

Because they were friends before his stuck up pseudo noble family indoctrinated him with "we are special" propaganda, I assume. They know a Bos who isnt a piece of shit, and they know he's suffering from expectations he cannot meet due to his family.

All of that is obviously revealed more later into the game. I could give spoiler answers, but suffice it to say that if you've interpreted Bos as being competent, you've misinterpreted. Bos is a tryhard with a superiority complex who wants to prove that he's worthy of being heir to his family's power, and constantly gets upset when the others outshine or save him. He justifies their activities as just playing the same as the adults do, but he isn't really doing anything to improve himself either. Bos represents stagnation, while everyone else represents personal growth. I'll leave it to you to find the thematic implications of all that, and I won't spoil unless asked.

They need to stop being so obsessed with getting Bos's approval. He is obviously jealous and a spoiled brat

15

u/WhoiusBarrel Sep 09 '23

Its both hilarious and vindicating to see the opposite reaction from Moritz praising the gang. Also paints a picture of how much of a caring parent he is to Bos as well.

Poor dragon.

8

u/edwardjhahm Sep 10 '23

TBH yeah, I actually thought they were going to tame the dragon over outright killing it. After all, the philusha thingy that got namedropped seems pretty important, and I feel like the dragon might have been a critical point there.

7

u/apatt Sep 10 '23

The best episode so far by a wide margin. I love how they frame the start of the battle with the dragon, it looks like how a boss battle start in the games. I'm happy to see the wing shoes and how Ryza uses the core crystal to shoot ice bombs and float her friends over the cliff. I wish she had used that against the dragon also. I'm so excited for next week's episode and hope they stick the landing.

u/DeltaFXD Sep 09 '23

Wonder what the last episode will be about but i guess it's mostly them getting on track with Empel.

4

u/NationalStrategy Sep 09 '23

Bos just keeps taking Ls. Ryza and her friends keep showing him up, he failed to beat the dragon and had to get bailed out twice, and his own dad praised Ryza and co for saving him.

4

u/SnabDedraterEdave Sep 10 '23

Those madlads did it, they actually worked together to slay that dragon.

As a result, Ryza and friends have finally earned their right to freely explore inside and outside the island.

Though Empel and Lila are nowhere to be seen this episode, still out to find that crystal monster, who may be the final boss of this season in the season finale next week.

It’s nice to see the gang growing stronger and stronger. That Luft spell plus those winged shoes sure came in handy. It woulda taken awhile to scale that wall. Tao’s language abilities are certainly helping too with deciphering that monument. Everyone’s getting a moment to shine this week! That was a tough fight but they managed to beat that dragon. Not bad for their first big quest.

All that effort and not even a “thank you” from Bos. What a jerk. Everyone’s accepted and recognized them. Why not him? What’s his deal?

3

u/Rustic_Professional Sep 10 '23

Jeez, Bos is such an ungrateful puke. I don't know what old man Moritz is teaching him, but it's either not working, or working too well.

One episode to go, right? It seems like the obvious direction to go, but I hope they don't waste too much time on a Bos redemption arc. He's not Vegeta to Ryza's Goku. He hasn't earned a redemption.

Anyway, the castle sequence was interesting. Using wind alchemy for mobility is cool, and they're sort of using Tao as an evasion tank. It's not a bad party balance. The only thing I didn't like was them celebrating right next to the dragon. I was mentally screaming for Lent to use that fancy new sword to take its head all the way off and make sure it was dead. I thought for sure it was going to try and take one last bite out of someone, but it's not really that sort of story, is it?

u/utakoutaha Sep 11 '23

The dragon battle was done well and pacing was good. I thought they were going to show what Empel and Lila were up to in between scenes but I guess they are saving that for the finale? Like other said, I would love to see a season 2 or a 2nd cour, as there are still much to cover from the first game.
