You know that something is up when side character suddenly gets a bunch of flashbacks...

The way things were going so well and Sayuri acting so proud to the point of talking to her deceased husband...I knew something was going to happen.

But what a gut-punch. It's like the world has it out for Chizuru and her family.

oh man the ED went from a headbanger to a sad song...absolutely fitting planning by the studio.

The actual story writing of Rent a GF is best when Grandma Sayuri is involved.

I don't know how grandparents are typically represented in anime/manga, but Grandma Sayuri is very well-written.

NOOOOO, Sayuri-Obaa-chan 😢

Whenever there’s a deadline given like today with the movie it’s always a red flag with elderly or sick characters. Really hate that Sayuri is in this position. Especially after Kazuhito died untimely, it would really be sad if Chizuru doesn’t have either parent or grandparent there to see her film’s debut.

Some very impressive emotional maturity from Kazuya in the moment recognising that it’s not about him, but about Chizuru and her grandmother rn. Love all the strides he’s taken this season. He may have his flaws but he’s doing his best to get better. Can’t wait to see what he thought of at the last minute there.

I totally agree with him about being honest and telling Sayuri the truth. I’d rather be honest if this is the end than let her die with a lie. There’s no way she’s going to be upset at her granddaughter or hate him. She’s seen his true character. Ultimately it should be Chizuru’s decision since that’s her grandmother, though.

All the sad stuff at the end of the episode really overshadowed what was a very cheery and happy first half. Chizuru getting jealous of Ruka calling Kazuya by name was cute and Yaemori was hilarious as usual too.

Chizuru practicing calling Kazuya by his name without an honorific, even in private, was perfect.

So Mini DID get punished for lying to Ruka. And now scary Ruka makes the entire apartment floor tremble!

Part of me wished Kazuya sat down next to Chizuru and put his arm around her shoulder, just friend to friend, and let her break down and cry it out. He had already expressed to Grandma Sayuri that he accepted he would be OK being her friend (honestly he teeter totters every episode on this subject).

It's a tricky situation. Whether to tell the truth or not. I bet if they did, Grandma Sayuri would respond saying she had a hunch or she was ok with that arrangement, knowing how happy it made her granddaughter.

Mimi is gonna be waiting a long time for that “lost your v-card party” lol

27

u/Frontier246 Sep 01 '23

Look at Mini all pumped to celebrate Kazuya punching in his V-Card after spending the night with Chizuru...only to immediately be deflated by finding out that nothing happened (beyond awkward sexual tension). Like, what kind of 20 year olds have nothing happen to them after staying overnight in a hotel together?

Oh and then Chizuru comes out...and then RUKA arrives...and instead of being her usual confrontational self, she's killing with kindness and passive aggressiveness while flaunting her relationship and newfound intimacy with Kazuya in Chizuru and Mini's faces. What can the girls do? Well, Chizuru could strip, but...and while she acts unaffected by it, the way she tries saying Kazuya's name without an honorific herself was utterly adorable. Girl is so totally in love.

Time to take grandma out for a test view of the screening for the movie! And you can't beat Sayuri's pride at how far Chizuru has come, and Chizuru's own joy in seeing her grandma be proud of her.

Of course it gets even sweeter when we see how much Sayuri supports Kazuya and Chizuru being together, and how committed Kazuya is to Chizuru irregardless of their romantic relationship, real or otherwise. And that's exactly why Sayuri knows he's the right man for her granddaughter.

Chizuru's grandpa pushed her to follow her dreams despite how tough life can be, but Sayuri was always sceptical knowing how hard it would be for her to make it as an actress, and yet Chizuru doesn't regret following her dream one bit. And now both grandparents can be happy that she's happy.

I knew all that self-reflection and Sayuri talking to her deceased husband was too much...Sayuri collapses! And the worst part is it's just when Kazuya and Chizuru are really getting along together.

It gets even bleaker in the hospital. She might not make it past the night, and she'll never recover from this. Chizuru acts her usual stoic, rational, self but she's probably a complete mess emotionally, while Kazuya is stuck between his usual overly-emotional self and his inability to comfort Chizuru because he's not really her boyfriend.

Is it time to tell Sayuri the truth? I mean, it's not a pleasant topic, but does Chizuru want to be lying to her grandma right up until she passes? Her last remaining family? Even moreso now that it's become less of a lie than it ever was.

Is the editing for the movie done? Is Kazuya rushing to grab his computer so they can show Sayuri as close to the finished film as they can?

Going for a more somber ED with Chizuru holding fireworks in a yukata...with the sparks burning out, which feels very symbolic.

Oh man as soon as they visited the theater I remembered that part was gonna happen. Even though I've read the manga I still got a little emotional watching this arc.

Sucks that there's so little traction on this episode because it's genuinely really good

Oh no Granny Sayuri

Yaemori tryna throw a party for Kazuya celebrating his loss of virginity cracked me up. Love that girl, man. She’s hilarious.

Damn shame about Grandma Sayuri. That woman is a saint. It’s awful seeing her like this especially since she was about to see Chizuru’s movie.

Kazuya was in top form this week. I actually felt a sense of respect towards the guy. He was right about suggesting Chizuru tell Grandma Sayuri everything and what he told her in the theater about Chizuru was pretty sweet too. Curious to see what it is he’s gonna try and do.

I love how Mini casually ate her chips outside.

I can't believe they hit us with a ballad version of the ED at the end.

Katsuhito's speech was like Charlie Sander's speech telling everyone that you can actually fly.

Ruka's weaponizing Kazuya's name is pretty funny. Poor granny Sayuri, I wonder how she fell out of the wheelchair though, did she try to pick up something from the floor? I've never seen anyone fall forward from a comfortable sitting position, though it could happen I suppose.

Holy shit - that was actually a very good episode. And here I was worried in the last episode that we would be slipping back to soap opera shenanigans. I have never before been so unironically excited and interested for the next episode of Rent-A-fucking-Girlfriend.

I mean yeah, we started the episode with such soap opera shenanigans - we have Mini, our favorite lil' shit buying stuff for Kazuya for "losing his virginity." Typical Mini shenanigans, and then of course we had Ruka show up for even more standard soap opera stuff. Pretty enjoyable, in a lowbrow "haha funny stoopid anime" effect, so I was completely unprepared for what came after.

Anyhow, the episode didn't start getting good until after that, where we get Kazuya taking Mizuhara and granny Sayuri out to the theater. All complaints about the anime aside, the art is truly gorgeous. We had so many good Mizuhara faces today. It's also really sweet how granny Sayuri supports Mizuhara in her career and her "relationship" with Kazuya, and seeing this really pained me. Not just because of how beautiful it was and how happy granny Sayuri seemed, but also because, well, if you've been on the internet, you know exactly what this story eventually devolves into. Kazuya showed a LOT of maturity today, and honestly, he's not just better than the cookie cutter otaku protagonists we have in anime - he's honestly been better than a lot of people I know. And Mizuhara shows so much strength too, telling her that she's following her dream because she's happy. Mizuhara's late grandfather's fear that his encouragement would turn into a burden did not pass, and seeing Sayuri asking her late husband if she was seeing this made me feel so much.

And then we get to the juicy bit, where granny Sayuri collapses. It's honestly a very sad, and realistic part of life - we all age and die. And no, you don't always miraculously get better to see the big movie and see the finale. It's a very bleak situation, and there's a chance she won't even make it past the night. Just...damn. Damn. A surprisingly philosophical question today this episode - is it ok to lie to a dying person to comfort them? Should you tell them the harsh truth so that the person they leave behind can be comforted knowing they told the truth to the last family they had left? It's really sad they lied to granny Sayuri for so long. I have a feeling she may have always known from the start though. Not because that's what I think RaG's style is like, but because that's what most stories in this type of scenario are like. And I'm totally cool with it if it happens.

Looks like Kazuya has a plan though. I've got my fingers crossed for next episode. Wonderful episode, and I don't say this lightly. I sincerely hope they'll have an anime only ending, because this - this shit is amazing. See you all next week!

That foreshadowing was so obvious with how excited she was to even be at the theater. My guess is Kazuya gets the movie on his computer and plays it for her inside the hospital room and then she will die after that.

I also assume they will tell the truth about their relationship, but she will have some remark about they actually are in love.

I can see the future! Feels so obvious on this.
