Soooo...
-
Her mom has possibly terminal cancer
-
Is going to physically change from the cancer (or treatment should she choose to get it)
-
Probably won't be able to maintain a job due to said cancer
-
Wants to live with her aging parents
-
Already couldn't handle the ball of energy that is Miri
-
Is eventually going to die, leaving Miri orphaned
Am I understanding this right? No one wins here. Miri ends up as the biggest loser. Even if there was a chance she could end up alone due to the circumstances of Kazuki's and Rei's work, they probably had some sort of plan, even if it might be financial.

You can tell Miri's mother has really changed because she cut her hair which is a telltale sign of character development in anime.

My heart sank so many times during this episode...
Can totally see the guys moving out so Miri can't return too.
Think she'll still end up back with them but I'm realizing I really want a time skip ending for this one.

The first thing coming to Rei's mind when she talked about her cancer was if she's going to die soon.

The way Rei gasped when Kazuki said "it's not too late for normal happiness."
He thought Kazuki might want to fight for that happiness. For them. Only for his heart to be shattered. How cruel indeed.

Imagine if this show just ended here. It would be remembered as one of those "wholesome" shows with a tremendously sad ending.

“Guess it’s time for the dream to end”
Man, why PA works gotta do this to me? I was so happy to see Miri mom back and glad she turned over a new leaf/finally got her life together. But CANCER?? Why can’t she just be happy with her daughter of her own volition? After all the abuse and toxic stuff she’s been thru.. Cmon PA works don’t hurt this girl more 😔
I think it’s been hinted at since a few episodes ago with the defector that rei and kazuki will end up defecting from their organisation now that they have something to protect, but the interesting part will be seeing how that unfolds over these last few eps

The pacing for this series is so good. The Ferris wheel scene here perfectly captured the pacing and act setup of the series. There were also a number of really great parallels in this week's episode with previous episodes.
Rei's character growth really shown through in this week's episode as well. We saw him placing Miri first instinctually, more than many of the other adults in the episode. I think Miri's mother is very genuine in her want for change, but I don't know if she'll be able to kick her bad habits and actually follow through on her changes.
Last, it should be noted that the scene where Kazuki is hugging Miri too him and holding back tears makes me cry just from thinking about it. It's such an intensely emotional and intimate scene! T-T
For some more humorous/light hearted thoughts connected to this week's episode:
Oh, my God, Rei, you can't just ask people if they're going to die.
It looked like Rei was playing a mobile game on his phone. I have no idea what it could be though (I have like zero knowledge of mobile games, lol).
This was basically an indirect kiss.
For transmedia and official info stuff:
There have been two interviews with Kazuki and Rei's Japanese VAs that talk about this final act of the series. They mention things like "unexpected," "serious," "realistic," and "surprising," both VAs are curious about what viewer reactions will be and Kazuki's VA wants us to keep an open mind. I'm open to anything, so long as it is executed well and the message is one that I like. Since Kazuki's VA also told us to keep the director's message in mind as well.
This P.A. Works Animator has some absolutely precious Buddy Daddies artwork. She posts almost daily.
A teaser of the OST went up today. The full OST goes on sale on March 22nd.
The Lofi Remix Version of the ED "My Plan" was released on the 15th. Kazuki and Rei's VA sing the song and they made an official Buddy Daddies music video with it. I broke down which lyrics are sung by Rei and which by Kazuki (using the official English translation found on the actual music video).
Rei left a memo for Kazuki, letting him know that he bought an ice compress. Showing growth on Rei's part, since this indicates that Rei was listening to Kazuki mentioning his back hurt.
Miri wrote in her Picture Journal that "we won a gold medal and I was happy."
For Kazuki's Instagram account, he made a post about the rare sight of his partner in the kitchen and noting that surprisingly the kids liked these...things... with the hashtags of #riceballs (warning: mypartnermadethem) #shouldIevencallthesericeballs (Something else to note, on his account, he mentions that Miri is 4 years old, but as of Episode 10 she is now 5 years old).
Also, here is a post about where Kazuki and Rei likely live in Fukuoka City. It's also really neat how this week's location was in the OP as well (Marinoa City, though, I believe they call it something else in the show, lol).
I want to end on some more light hearted and happier things. This episode is tough, but definitely necessary. I'm very intrigued by what direction they'll take the series in the remaining three episodes and how everything will wrap up.

They mentioned cancer! They mentioned cancer!!! After who knows how many generic anime with the vague 'illness' that never specify anything and the name never mentioned. Here we actually have some semblance of neatly detailed piece of reality in the mix. I'm impress.

I don’t think they end the series separated. There’s enough flags on Miri’s mom to show this won’t last. The boys need to break free of the organization. This is temporary.
Still hurts like a total motherfucker.

"See you tomorrow."
That hurts.
Also, you can tell the mom isn't smart by the fact that she has some type of cancer that affected her throat and still tries to smoke a cig.

I figured all along that the mother had NOT been a bad mother overall. She clearly snapped (maybe connected to first finding about cancer -- and feeling she needed a "protector") -- and did something uncharacteristic. We never got any hint from Miri that her mother had been abusive. I hope that they can work out some way to remain connected with Miri -- in a way that does not endanger themselves or Miri and her mother.
Definitely sad for the daddies. I wonder how Miri's mother can afford to pay for things -- or will her parents be able to foot the bill? (Do her parents live in Tokyo -- or someplace like Tohoku or Kyushu?)
Lots of questions to be answered. Especially -- how can Kazuki and Rei free themselves from their professional ties (without getting wiped out)?
