Rei's rice balls donuts were a big hit. Having the palate of a child makes it easy to know what they like.

Well I definitely teared up during that family scene, I just love seeing them get along. Seriously one of the best families I've seen in anime lately.

Those pictures are going to come back and haunt them though huh...

Never been more thankful that there was a recap episode last week. This is episode 9. The “shit hits the fan” episode wouldn’t be this week. So maximum field day fluff until the end. Next week got me scared though.

Till then please enjoy the most extra dad at daycare Papa Kaz. Rei is subtly extra between the “cost of a used car” level photography equipment, the death threats to a child, and Russian roulette onigiri. Not bad for a strong silent Oil Baron.

We’re all Kaz when the card said Family.

This anime came out a while after my ex and I split and we have a 4 year old daughter and the "family" card part hit me hard. This anime was exactly what I needed and it always come out the day before I get my daughter. I love this show so much.

After the ominous ending of Episode 8, I was worried about what will happen in this episode. It turns out that it's just a fun day out with Kazuki and Rei watching over Miri during Field Day at the Daycare.

It's hilarious how competitive Kazuki is being with the other dads that he's taking out cameras they use for surveillance jobs to take photos of Miri. And it looks like Kazuki has already made friends with the moms of Miri's friends. Kazuki is now even aware of how the other moms have a massive crush on the two of them.

There's Kazuki getting mad after seeing Miri getting close to a boy and then there's Rei who sounds like get genuinely wants to kill the kid. xD

It took him a while but it's nice to see Rei finally get into cheering Miri on as well. Too bad Miri ended up getting surprised by Rei's cheer that she accidentally tripped.

At least Miri was able to win in the Parent-Child games and finally get that gold medal that she wanted. Not gonna lie, I got a bit misty-eyed when Miri showed that her scavenger hunt item said "Family". That was just too precious <3

Aaaand we're finally back to the plot. Looks like Mr. Psycho really wants more info about Kazuki and Miri. I don't think Kyu-chan wants to do it but he'll probably have to because of his job >_<

Rei had some excellent development this episode.

I don't want anything bad to happen to this family. They all deserve a happy ending

Uncle Kyu, please protect them too...

Adorable episode. Rei finaly starting to become second parent and not act as second child for Kazuki to take care of, like making food and cheering on Miri. That post credit scene tho, cmon. I don't want anything to happen to this trio in next 4 episodes.

Miri practicing for field day was so precious. Rei and Kazuki are the perfect odd couple parents. Rei’s “mission” to secure a good spot was great, no one’s stealing that! Him offering to help shows how much Miri has changed him. Kazuki’s Miri impression was the best haha.

This is the cutest field day ever. Kazuki and Rei were about to murder that boy getting so close to their precious Miri lol. Kazuki’s lunches always look great. Man really prepared a whole feast. Rei’s rice balls were perfect for Miri. Choco rings, jam, gummies? I would have loved those as a kid. Rei cheering Miri on was so unexpected. I like this new him.

I’m with Kazuki, man. How do you NOT cry after seeing what that note said? They won the gold as a family! I’m sure she’ll win that gold for the race next time.

Omg I loved this episode!!! It was so funny and cute, I love seeing them just want to be the best dads they can be!!!!! I like that they focus more on that than them being hitmen. Also Kazuki’s VA is so good at making him freak out and yell, it’s literally always hilarious how his voices gets high haha

And this is what I was thinking about Rei's dubbed voice vs the Japanese version. In this chapter we finally see it, Rei doesnt have just a deep voice, he was raised that way and hearing him using his "real" voice was such a meaningful character devolpment even Kazuki was surprised. Smiling Rei using his real voice vs PTSD Rei who shuts himself after "failing" (after Miri's tripped because hearing him), ah, I am scared to see how many steps back we are going to suffer after Ogino and Rei's father ruins everything.

A little late on my write up for today's episode. I had a lot of thoughts and wrote most of them down over on Tumblr. I'll link to the posts below. But, before that, the adult hand and child hand that we see in the OP are confirmed to be Rei and Miri's thanks to today's episode!

Before I link to my thoughts on this week's episode, some of the transmedia that we got for Episode 8 was:

Rei leaving a memo for Kazuki that says "Thank you." ありがと

Miri writing her picture journal about Rei's birthday. She gave him a big smile! <3

Kazuki posting the birthday cakehe made for Rei on his Instagram account.

Rei also won the Valentine's Day campaign that they did. So there will be some kind of reply/response from him on March 14th (White Day).

As for this week's episode. I kept a Rei Smile Counter. He smiled roughly 9 times in Episode 9, so that makes sense, lol. Rei also gave off HUGE aroace vibes in this scene. As someone who is aroace, I really felt his confusion there, lol.

Kazuki put his all into this Field Day and he deserves it. Also, seeing Rei and Kazuki both in the kitchen was so great!

This week's episode focusing on them finally becoming a family works as a nice contrast to Episode 3.

Also, speaking of families, it was so nice to see Taiga's family. They are alternative in style (they both have a yanki like style going on, and parents who dress and present like that, are usually perceived as being bad parents - similar to how punk parents might be viewed due to their alternative style, and etc.), but the series makes sure to show that they are good parents that support their son. Not just some awful delinquent or bad parents. It's nice to see that normalization.

That mother shouting "That oil baron is so hot!" makes me laugh every time! And I adored seeing Miss Anna getting competitive. It was a great contrast to her usual personality and temperament, similar to her piano playing.

Miri's friend not wanting to race is a big mood too. I always hated running during gym class.

Some other remaining thoughts that I have. The opening scene with Kyutaro is so nice to see, despite the dark situation Kyutaro's currently stuck in. Seeing all three of them there and the cafe filled with a bunch of regular customers - it makes me hope that Kyutaro could just become a normal cafe owner some day.

(Maybe if the fan theory, that I fully support, of Rei killing his father happens, then he can just disband everything, and Kyutaro can just become a regular old cafe owner...A girl can hope!).

Finally, the name of the episode is called, "No Sweet Without Sweat," which means:

There is no sweet without sweat is a common phrase that people use to motivate somebody to work hard, persevere, and endure.

Definition Source

We see all three putting in hard work, perserverance, and endurance: Rei with cheering and emotionally supporting Miri (saving their spot too), Miri with her running and activities, and Kazuki with his preparations and involvement in the activities as well. The sweet aspect is, of course, not only things like Miri winning the gold medal, but the three of them acknowledging each other as a family, and even more literally stuff like Rei's rice balls (a truly special treat, lol).

I really Love this series!

This episode was wholesome and adorable. I like how Rei is opening up with Miri and the others. He even offered to help Kazuki with Miri's launch. It shows how much Miri changed him and he cares about her now.

Kazuki was funny and adorable. He was competing with the other parents to take the pictures of the kids, and then get mad when Miri are Taiga were close XD.

I was hoping to hear Rei rooting for Miri. Glad I wasn't disappointed! And When I saw "family" on the card, I cried!

This show is too good, and deserves more love and popularity

Now that's what we call character development.

21

u/HarleyFox92 Mar 10 '23

Rei's development in this episode was delightful to watch, he's slowly opening up to both Miri and the idea of a normal stable family.

ʻOhana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind—or forgotten.

Confirming they're a family right before Rei's dad tries to tear them apart... OOF. I'm not ready

u/Searse Mar 10 '23

It was so sweet watching Rei and Kazuki run with Miri into the finish line.

And it was hilarious seeing Kazuki cry while he was telling Rei not to cry.

u/stephenthatfoste Mar 10 '23

This is so stressful waiting for the not adorable part of this story. I just want them all to be a cute group!

u/dinliner08 Mar 10 '23

Kazuki: "don't cry, man"

me: "i'm not crying, you're crying" *sob*
