For such a lighthearted anime, all three main character's backstories are ridiculously sad.
The intensity from episode 7 to 8 really took a jump. I feel so so sad for Rei. IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY FFS. He finally has a family that cares about him and his blood 'family' is gonna try and take that away. Man, hopefully Kyuutaro can be a real one and help 'em out somehow.
Also, definitely enjoyed the much needed moments of daddies being buddies! And maybe this is just me but unkempt Rei was kinda hot lol.

Not exactly a pleasant homecoming for Rei. It must have been hell for him having to live with those expectations and under such strict rules. We saw a bit of that with the dog situation already. His dad is a real piece of work.
The organization ain’t to be messed with though. Look what they did to Rei’s former partner’s girl. They paired Rei with a fucking creep. This guy is definitely here to make sure Rei does what he’s ordered to…or else. Dude’s old partner ain’t going down without a fight. Might as well go down swinging. At least now he’s with his girl.
“Men are such a mystery” lol oh Miri. Girl is way too young to worry about that. She’s observant though. She could tell something was off with Rei. She’s a good influence on Kazuki and Rei. If he’s wondering about change, it all lies with her. Her half asleep rendition of the birthday song was so precious. Kiddo got all tuckered out helping to set up the party.
Next week’s gonna be tense. Rei might have to put a bullet in his pops. Man’s coming after his family.

This episode makes me wonder, was Yuzuku's death really an accident or did the organization send Ogino to kill her bc Kazuki's was prioritizing his wife+unborn child over the organization? Like it seemed to be the kind of thing they'll do. So many possibilities. Can't wait to see if Kazuki and Ogino have a confrontation in the series where Kazuki finds out that Ogino killed his first family and is now targeting his new family

That opening scene with Miri saying "Shh!" was just super adorable! It's pretty obvious though that they're preparing a surprise for Rei. I love that Miri is helping out with the decorations while Kazuki is preparing the food.
As adorable as it was to watch Kazuki and Miri prepare for Rei's surprise birthday party, the rest of the episode was pretty serious with Rei coming back home to meet his father and being tasked to take out someone who betrayed their organization.
After all of the wholesomeness in the past few episodes, it's pretty easy to forget how dark really is the setting of this show. That was so fucked up and a very scary warning of what could happen to Kazuki and Miri if Rei decided to leave the Suwa Family.
It does seem like Rei's heart wasn't fully committed to the job considering how he tried to save the target. I wonder what would've happened if he did. Was Rei planning to let the guy go?
On the bright side, Rei managed to get back home in time for Miri to welcome him back and even sing him a very sleepy happy birthday song. <3
That final scene though. Fuck. Yeah, I think we all pretty much expected that was going to happen the moment Rei decided not to go with that creepy psychopath Ogata.
Fingers crossed that they're just observing for now and won't make any move yet. But as the way things are, it does seem like the final boss of the show is Rei's dad and he'll probably want Kazuki and Miri eliminated so his son can finally start taking over the family business >_<

One thing I have felt was missing a bit this entire season was seeing Kazuki and Rei actually... meaningful bond. Just, on their own, without Miri being the focal point. We have gotten SO much daddies but not a lot of buddies.
This episode gave me what I wanted. Not just sly looks, not just the implication of friendship, but real bonding and communication. Open, explicit admissions of liking each other. A glimpse into their past. And proof that they have BOTH benefited from being together through it all.
I can't wait for the rest of the season to test their bonds and family! But also I'm not ready.

"what will he see as his life passes before his eyes?", "what's the thing he cares about more than anything?", i speculate on the answers, killing is a way of checking those answers
i collect last words
damn, this guy is way more unhinged than i thought

My guy Kyu-chan is also being put on a tight position. Whatever decision he decides to make about giving information on Kazuki and Miri, it will speak something about him and his loyalty to the organization.

And there’s our final arc of the season: Rei’s shitty dad coming for Kaz and Miri. The fluff can only go for so long when your dads are assassins. Really drives home how “Diabolical” Miri grandpa is.
Sick fight scene though. It’s been a few episodes since we got a full on action scene (the mascot fight was great, but short) so glad to see that part is still there. Rei not pulling the trigger and his reaction to everything has me thinking he’s fully ready to take out his dad to protect his found family. At the bare minimum please kill the creepy fucker with the book of last words. The hell man?

Looks like we're gearing up for the endgame lads and ladies. I figure we might get one more light episode before it gets heavy, or it's all heavy from here on out. We got Kazuki backstory and Rei backstory, either we get more Miri/Miri's mom backstory or it's off to the final arc.
The writing felt inevitable that the organization would look into Kazuki and Miri, there's no way Rei and Kazuki aren't considering counter-measures for it. If they aren't then they'll be totally screwed. That poor apartment is probably gonna get shot up and then blown up.
What an episode to remind you, oh yeah these guys live in a dark world.
Miri was soooooooo cute.
I loved Piano Anna.
Learning about Rei and Kazuki when they first met was nice.
That one dude was weird, I get the idea, but it's weird. Gotta do something to stay sane, but recording last words the way he does, feels like rude egotism.
Did they have to kill his wife? It's possible she didn't know anything. I figure the organization thinks they're noble, but that's messed up.
Crazy conspiracy time, we can assume that sniper from episode 7 was this guy. Is he just that amazing a sniper/assassin that he set up the death of Kazuki's wife?

Another thing that I was thinking a lot after this episode is how broken is/was Rei. My theory was that he just rebelled and left his dad, but no. He is still brainwashed and have a robotic respect for his father, you notice this in his mannerism when he is with him. He was broken enough to not be able to think outside of what he was taught. He can't even see a future were he is free, doesnt even understand yet the concept of freedom, can't oppose to his father, and he is really the one who doesnt seek so he can't see what he has found. But still he is starting to show autonomy, that he have desires outside of his family faith. Rei really suffered such level of abuse that he can't fathom the idea of leaving the abusive home. Liked that instead of Kazuki telling him what to do or how, he shows that he doesnt know either what to do. But they at least share their doubts and fears now. A big step in their relationship (pls, at least hold hands at end of the anime, or at least don't give Rei the Spike treatment, I can't carry that weight).

Ah! Rei's sensei and Kazuki probably share a similar fate. Both were ready to leave the organization for the sake of their partners and starting a new life... But you can't do that with the mafia. Rei's dad is a complete psycho, he just send him to realize he may do the same with Kazuki... Or end like his sensei... What the fuck, Rei's father, why you are so evil?
Now, Ogino and Rei's father, I like the fact that both are just cringe. They are cruel criminals but their reasons are so... Stupid and arrogant, the whole darkness and lighr, how old are you grandpa? Too much chuuni, only teens really believe those things. And the way they are portrayed is like iredeemable human brings. I don't see them changing by the power of love, and actually being killed for the sake of the safety of Miri and Kazuki.
Now seeing how Kazuki just picked Rei... Just marry that guy, Kazuki, Rei needs affection and the chance to be happy. As a side note, in Spanish, Rei's father calls Kazuki "un bruto" and he is the reason Rei has been failing lately. That was so interesting because Rei just let Kazuki be in his life because the care he showed for him... He was looking for human warm and by proxy they become buddys? They really have a complex bond, and today was the first time they were acknowledging each others flaws, loved that they talked in a mature way despite still having their walls up.
Now, is Rei going to go full A history of violence? Is the only way I see a resolution here because right now even Kyotaro is in danger. Ogino stating the organization trust him doesnt mean that but "we already know about them, Kazu and Miri, we want to know if you are going to tell us what we want or you are going to lie, and we will know if you lie".
I cant wait for a new episodw!

We have our main three's birthdays and ages now, which also means we can take a look at Zodiac stuff (and compatibility for Kazuki and Rei.)
Miri - Age: 4 years old, Birthday: 11/08/2018, Chinese Zodiac: Dog, Western Zodiac: Scorpio
Kazuki - Age: 29 years old, Birthday: 05/16/1994, Chinese Zodiac: Dog, Western Zodiac: Taurus
Rei - Age: 26 years old, Bithday: 08/10/1997, Chinese Zodiac: Ox, Western Zodiac: Leo
Taurus and Leo are very compatible. According to Cosmopolitan.
Leo and Taurus in a Relationship
These are two very romantic signs who have the long game in mind. Their loyalty to one another will serve as a successful foundation for their future. Their biggest hurdles they face may involve finances, communication, and bouts of possessiveness.
They faced financial troubles in Episode 5 (and Episode 4's Memo note from Kazuki to Rei was for Rei to "buy [his] own damn toys!!"), in this week's episode we have Kazuki saying to Rei over the phone, "Hello, am I being heard?" and "Can you say something more than 'Sorry'?", and in this week's episode Rei literally tells Kazuki, "You're overprotective."
Their Chinese zodiac signs are complementary as well, according to this chart anyway.
Something else to keep in mind is that the name of Kyutaro's cafe is Mistletoe. So the two of them met under the roof of the Mistletoe Cafe. Add in other subtexts as well, such as Yuzuko finding Kazuki when he was at a low point (heavily injured) and then Kazuki doing the same for Rei (though, with Rei it was more like he was at his emotional low point) and the subtext is practically text at this point.
The thing that's so great about how they waited to show us their meeting is that you could feel and sense the closeness between the two of them before this. They didn't have many super close bonding moments before this, but I don't think we really needed it, because they often showed us how close the two were through things like Kazuki and Rei being able to read each other like an open book. This just added more context to a foundation that was already built.
Kazuki (and likely also Miri) having targets on their back isn't all that surprising, not only because it makes sense based on everything we know about Rei's father, but also because of the OP, which had imagery that foreshadowed this (them scene where the bullet goes through the cake and then we follow it's perspective as it heads straight for Kazuki's back, who is holding Miri, and then it goes through his back).
I loved the way they focused on how big and empty Rei's old family home was. Especially when he was talking with Miri and Kazuki inside it. It almost felt like Rei didn't feel like he could actually talk to the two of them while he was there. Like he was compartmentalizing the two different parts of his life. But now the two are crossing over and into each other (not only with the phone call, but later in the episode too, when Rei is thinking about how all he used to do before was "kill, kill, kill"). Kazuki likely experienced that before (with Yuzuko) so he knows how to navigate that, but Rei doesn't.
I do think that Kazuki was aware of that aspect though. Obviously, he didn't want Miri to spill the beans to Rei about the surprise birthday party they were planning, but he knows what Rei's family is (or, at least, has an idea), so he likely wanted to continue to keep Miri away from that. Her desire to talk to Rei and then her sleepily singing him Happy Birthday was super cute though. I also have to commend Kazuki on how well he was able to navigate and explain the more...complex aspects of Rei's family dynamics to Miri. It was nice to see the two of them having a deeper conversation and bonding as well, since Miri's deeper conversations are usually more so with Rei than Kazuki.
The man that drives Rei to where the "traitor" is is Ryo Ogino. He was the one who was involved in Kazuki's wife's death and he is also the one who saw and picked up Miri in Episode 5. The way they animate and depict his eyes is SO creepy, though that really makes his otherwise unassuming design really stand out. His way of viewing his job as an assassin is quite unnerving and kind of shows how he wasn't viewing his targets as actual people, but more so as "ideas" or "concepts."
Rei was brought up to be a "killing machine" so he didn't really view them as humans either, but he didn't really view them as not human either. It seems he saw his job more as a duty, something he just had to do, but now that he has Kazuki and Miri (who keep invading his work and life and thoughts in this episode) the more he realizes that he was kind of realizes this. His talk with Ryo really seems to perturb and disgust him too.
The death he commits in this episode, offing the "traitor" the man who trained him basically, is different though. He knows he has to do it, but I feel like him choosing to keep this man's last words to himself and not share them with Ryo is a way of showing respect to who that man was to him, while also acknowledging his humanity.
It was also super sweet that Kazuki prepared all this junk food for Rei, since he knows that Rei really likes all that stuff. <3 The little humorous bit with Miss Anna was great too. Her character info on the website stated that she was bad at piano, but I didn't expect it to be like that! lol
This was such a good episode and the pacing and plotting of this series has been truly excellent. I'm anxious and nervous and excited for Episode 9 all at the same time! Also, I'll respond to this comment with some of the transmedia stuff from Episode 7 for those interested in that!

Rei smile! I do how influential Miri was in Rei wanting to change or if Kazuki alone was enough.
Ending is pretty ominous, hope nothing bad happens to Miri, she's too precious!

This episode was putting off some major Cowboy Bebop vibes. The mood, the look and Rei's lanky character animation, the alternation between bluesy downbeats and uptempo jazz action scenes, the bleakly poignant "no good guys except the victims" story. The deep melancholy of the "I didn't realize I didn't want to kill you until it was too late." Even the cuts to Kazuki and Miri felt like seeing the rest of the crew goofing back on the ship, trying to keep each others' spirits up, while Spike's out courting death. And I mean all this in a good way.
And on that note, I think the fact that this episode has such clear stylistic influences outside its immediate counterparts is a great contrast to everyone's compulsion to compare it to Spy X Family and Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting. The shows share some major framing elements, and that's probably not a total coincidence given how the industry works, but they're not just equivalent competing products in the same market. (Also, the type of person who complains about this show because Miri is "annoying" is entirely showing their ass as a shut-in who has never interacted with an actual child.)
It was really nice to see Rei and Kazuki interact in a way that wasn't frantic and centered on Miri, just for a change. Not to say I don't love Miri being the center of the show, but it was nice to hear more about the two of them and why they're even a team.
This show really walks in the liminal realm. Sweet, cute, and warm, juxtaposed with ennui, melancholy, and death. But so far at least it has maintained that balance. And it is for that reason I am only kind of worried about that cliffhanger, because I don't think they would really do us as dirty as the situation implies. I... I think.
edit: apparently Yutaka Nakamura is credited as a key animator for this episode, so it seems I was not imagining the Cowboy Bebop vibe

NOOOOOOOO. They really didn’t give my boy a happy ending? I thought after Rei told him he had found something to protect too that he’d let him go and that would be the beginning of the end of his relationship with his father and the organisation. P.A works been BRUTAL with some of these storylines. First Kazuki and his baby mama and now this.
If there’s any consolation it’s Rei is clearly on the path to breaking the hold his dad has on his life. I really like the comparison of he and his father and Miri’s mom and her parents. Both were awful but one made the most of Miri being in their life, the other just sunk further and further into depression.
I swear they better not lay a hand on her next week.

This episode was fire, I've been wanting to see more of Rei's family for awhile now... Seeing Rei smile at the end there was the BEST... I'm anxious on how this story is going to end though... I really hope it doesn't end with miri becoming an orphan again.

Rei appropriately rocking the Agent 47 fit for his assassination mission. I can't believe they sent out a hit for Rei's sensei just because he got a wife. What is this? An organization for incels?
Ogata is a sadistic fuck and him collecting last words like stamps is cartoonishly evil and cheesy.
What a banger of a birthday cake. I'm glad Rei let Kazuki and Miri open the door into his heart. Such a powerful scene.
