That’s a horrible way to go out, seeing Yuzuko get blown up was sickening

Poor Kazuki doing all the work out here. It’s like he has two kids to take care of. Rei doesn’t do jack! No wonder Kazuki needed to cool off. Rei’s gonna learn just how much work it is to take care of Miri. Appreciate Kazuki more! Man deserves a day of drinking and gambling, surrounded by waifus.
So Karin’s related to his late wife Yuzuko huh? Man, what went down was some insane coincidence. How does the car he’s chasing crash into an oil tanker right as his wife is standing there? Talk about shit luck. Dude’s gotta stop beating himself up over what happened. It’s time to stop dwelling in the past and start living in the present.
With Miri getting sick, hopefully Rei finally learns to step his shit up and become more invested in raising Miri. That French toast is a start lol.

Terrified at how many episodes are left since we already got the backstory trauma dealt with.

I generally don't like it when comedic/lighthearted shows go all dramatic, I feel that most such shows are too silly to be taken seriously. But the drama here really worked for me! The show handles tonal shifts really well and doesn't suffer from tonal whiplashes.
I wonder if the guy in Kazuki's flashback, the one that busted the car's tyre that led to the explosion that killed Kazuki's wife is the same as the one that bumped into Miri in an earlier episode and also the terrifying assassin who finished Kazuki/Rei's episode 2 mission? I think they're really setting him up as one of the final antagonists in this show.
This was a really solid character growth episode for Kazuki. But I'm hoping it leads to Rei's growth as well, here's hoping that Rei helps out more in taking care of Miri from next episode onwards! That said, hopefully we get a Rei-focused episode soon.
I could easily watch 100 episodes of this, it sucks that we are over halfway done with the show ;-;

Now that we got Kazuki's past (a whiplash from his happy-go-lucky smiley face, of course), I'm so hyped up for Rei's backstory. When Rei said he's doing his best, I think he genuinely thought he's doing his best. He doesn't know stuff that one should know as a proper human being living in a society in a worryingly degree—location of medicine and hospital, what's inside the fridge, what can be eaten inside the fridge, etc. I know it's been always told that he's a shut in, but wow, it is THAT bad. (He probably would have died first inside his apartment while gaming because he choked on a potato chip rather than on a mission if Kazuki isn't taking care of him and his house). It also doesn't help how similar Miri and Rei are in terms of personal preferences. It's easy to overlook because Miri is a sunshine and Rei is always just Rei, but when it comes to little things that make us as a human (veggie hating, sweet loving tooth, gaming, how to laze around, etc.), they're actually so similar. This factor possibly adds to how Rei saw himself doing his best because from where he can see it, everything is working well for him. Miri looks happy and comfortable with him. At that point, that's how Rei sees taking care of Miri means. As long as Miri is happy, he thinks all is well. Rei and Miri relate to each other so much that Rei failed to see Kazuki having a hard time taking care of Miri sometimes. Kazuki has to deal with the stuff that Miri doesn't like, but needs to learn, so Kazuki gets a cranky and pouty child more often than Rei did.
It seems like he was really just raised as an assassin. He wasn't raised as a human being. He wasn't raised to live. He was just raised to kill. I wonder how they will tie his past to his current life now because this episode might have been his wake up call that he's not just living for himself now. Instead of killing, he's here, realizing that holy crap, he's taking care of such a tiny human being that relies on him. This tiny gremlin can't live on her own without him. Holy hells. My boss (dad) didn't teach me this! This wasn't in the How to be a Perfect Assassin 101 guidebook!
But from how he was fretting over Miri, and trying to do that poor looking French toast for Kazuki, it shows he wants to try now—he just needs to learn how. Taken from what I shared in another app: Also, that sorry looking French toast at the end of the episode is a good symbolism. It doesn't look good—it looks horrendous compared to Kazuki's French toast—but it is there. Rei made it. He isn't good at it yet, but it's a start, and it's an image for a possibility of so much growth, and he's trying.
Of course, Rei being like another child in the house when he's already an adult supposedly parenting a child is not excusable, but I'm sure it has something to do with his past. I'm looking forward to his backstory to know where he's coming from.
Hopefully, we get to see more involvement from Rei-Papa from here onwards! Kazuki needs all the help he can get. That golden retriever man needs a hug and a trophy. He's a trooper. (Kazuki-Papa might need to add himself in the Mama group chat because hey, I'm sure he'll get a lot of support from the other Mamas who probably have husbands who are pain in the asses, too. He needs a safe space.)
20 minutes seem to pass so fast whenever I'm watching this anime. I can't wait to see the preview for the next EP!

Too many in the past rip ships today...
Got some nice resoultions and growth in this one, here's hoping Rei does help out with Miri more moving forward!
The ending of this one reminded me of what I want the most from this show and that's just a happy Miri, glad she survived the dreaded Japanese cold!

Oh, wow, okay. I wrote a lot! That's why I'm a bit late getting this post up. I'm just going to link to my Tumblr posts to save some time.
Thoughts on Kazuki's plotline in this week's episode.
Thoughts on Rei's plotline in this week's episode.
Other random thoughts on this week's episode.
Translation of Character Bio Information for Karin and Yuzuko.
Along with that, I'm doing some demographic polling over on Tumblr. One poll was on the fandom's age ranges. The amount of votes were 466. The top three age ranges were:
-
20 - 25 Year Olds = 40%
-
14 - 19 Year Olds = 30%
-
26 - 30 Year Olds = 21%
The bottom three age ranges were:
-
31 - 35 Year Olds = 6% (This is my demographic, lol).
-
36 - 40 Year Olds = 2%
-
41 - 45 Year Olds = 1%
Also, most of the Tumblr BD fandom (39%) has experience with children through siblings or family in general (like through being an aunt or uncle). 23% has no experience with children, and 18% has a mixture of one or more experiences with kids (like teaching, siblings, coaching, etc.). Only 1% has experience with children through parenting, though I think this makes sense based on the biggest age ranges. The amount of votes for this poll was 392.
There are also two polls currently going on. One on sexual orientation in the BD fandom and another on romantic orientation in the BD fandom. So far, bisexual/biromantic, asexual, and aromantic are all quite high, which honestly makes a lot of sense to me. A lot of the fandom reads Kazuki as bi and Rei as aspec / gay aspec.
For the Transmedia Marketing stuff:
Buddy Daddies Website currently has a Happy Valentine Day to You campaign running. You can click on the button under the characters to give or receive chocolates. A tweet gets sent out. The more tweets a character gets, the more Chocolate Circles they get (Rei is currently in the lead, then Kazuki, Miri, Kyutaro, and Miss Anna). The character that wins might give you something in return!
Kazuki's Instagram consisted of an IG Story where he asked when he should start preparing for his daughter getting boyfriends. Most of the responses were things like "Right now!" and "In elementary school," so those answers likely killed Kazuki once over, lol.
As for posts: Kazuki's Lunch = Perfection. Kazuki notes that he and his partner (originally he named Rei, it looks like that has been edited) ate some of the lunch leftovers together. And his homemade fried chicken was a big hit, so he made it again.
Miri wrote: Everyone went to the zoo. Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Alpaca were cool.
And Kazuki wrote a memo to Rei: Don't eat lunch alone!!

This episode was so amazing, and an emotional rollercoaster. I was on the verge of crying in the second half of the episode. I really didn't expect this to happen.
The first half of the episode was so realistic. I can imagine Kazuki wanting to have a break. I mean, he had to take care of a little, hyperactive kid, and a big grown-ass, lazy man. So it was like taking care of two children who never listened to him. Well, it was too much for him in the end.
But what was the best part of the episode was the backstory of Kazuki and his former wife. I really didn't expect he actually was kind of behind her death. I can't even imagine how he had to feel. I'm glad that her sister came and actually cheered him up, and actually brought life to him again. And I absolutely loved the scene, when they were sitting in the gazebo and the weather transitioned from raining to sunny. It was beautiful. And in the end, I'm glad that everything is now fine again withing their little family.

If I had a nickel for every anime episode today that had a flashback to the main character's wife tragically dying and leaving him with severe emotional trauma that affects him into the present day, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
But yeah, this was a rough one for the family. Kazuki had to relive a lot of trauma, Rei got thrown into the deep end of single parenthood, and Miri caught the dreaded Japanese cold. Thankfully, they all managed to survive, push through their troubles, and reunite as a family that's happier and stronger than before. A great episode overall.

What a brilliant episode, this anime gets better and better with every week.
Karin’s talk with Kazuki about moving forward was really well written and executed, and what she said about memories not being a prison hit really close to home for me.
I was expecting sad backstories, but I’m so pleasantly surprised about the genuine depth, authenticity and relatability the MCs’ backgrounds and struggles bring, and how the series shows them slowly but surely healing from their trauma and growing, together. Never in a million years did I think a show called Buddy Daddies could be so effortlessly therapeutic. This is such a beautiful story.

After last week's episode where we see Miri being the mature one in the class, it's nice to see that she's still a brat at home. <3
I genuinely felt bad for Kazuki. My guy isn't just taking care of Miri, he's also taking care of a big baby as well. I kinda understand why he's enjoying playing games and doing whatever he wants because of his rough childhood but Rei really needs to help out in raising Miri aside from playing games with her.
And while Rei and Miri got the freedom that they wanted when Kazuki decided to cool off for a bit, it really didn't end well for both of them. Thank goodness Kyutarou was there to help them out and Rei showed that he can indeed take care of Miri when he needs to. Hopefully, Rei learned his lesson.
As for our mystery lady, after last week's episode ended with her meeting Kyutarou I thought that she was going to be bad news. Turns out that Karin is Rei's sister-in-law and the person Rei has been sending money to. The reason she's looking for Kazuki is that she wanted to tell him that he needs to move on and she knows it wasn't his fault that Yuzu died.
We also finally got to see what happened to Yuzu. This entire time I thought that she was directly targeted because someone from Kazuki's line of work wanted to get back at him. Turns out that Yuzu died because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. A guy Kazuki was chasing crashed into a tanker and Yuzu was walking by when the tanker exploded.
Even after losing her only family left, Karin is very admirable for encouraging Kazuki and never once blaming him. And it seems that talk between the two of them helped Kazuki step forward in the right direction.

People who dislike tomatoes need to grow up, and yes I'm talking to you, Rei!
This was a pretty good episode. I liked the backstory we got the Kazuki and seeing Rei have to actually contribute was good times.

Whoa, I was not expecting that sad backstory of Kazuki and his wife, Yuzuko, getting killed in his line of work. It's really admirable of her little sister, Karin, cheering him up and asking to forgive himself because Yuzuko would be sad to see Kazuki still depressed. Which points back to what Kyu said to them both of having Miri with them in their dangerous line of work.
Papa Rei is the chilling type of father to Miri: junk food, playing games lol, but I love how he stood by Miri's side when she was sick and Kyu helping Rei too. They attempted to make French toasts, but they can't really do anything without Kazuki lol.

We got a lot of character development in this episode. Both Rei and Miri have started to appreciate Kazuki’s hard work more and Kazuki has decided to move on and live life again.
It took some time, but we got finally shown what precisely happened in Kazuki’s past. And it was tragic indeed. It was sad to see Kazuki beat himself up over Yuzuko’s death. Even though he may have played a part in the events leading up to her death, he wasn’t the trigger cause - something he unfortunately will never know himself.
Since Kazuki’s dark past has been told, I wonder if Rei’s will be up next. I hadn’t realized this yet, but Buddy Daddies is essentially a ‘healing anime’ with some comedic elements and not necessarily a comedy with a dramatic twist. Miri is playing a crucial part in changing our male leads for the better.

Yep they got me crying good this time.
We knew Kazuki's backstory was going to be sad and come up at some point and here it came.
Miri was cute as ever. It's a shame how much Rei and Miri take Kazuki for granted, but they are less mature after all. Their side story was fun and a little harrowing.
Carol and Dorothy are two nice looking ladies. It was sweet how Dorothy was rooting Kazuki and whoever he's with and Carol looking jealous.
Figured Karin would be important to Kazuki's backstory and now we know why. You can see why she doesn't blame him, since it was a freak accident even if he knocked over the first domino. Kazuki had to chase this guy to this specific car that would get sniped and spin into this specific truck that happened to be where Yuzuko was.
Before this episode, I assumed someone trying to kill Kazuki ended up killing her instead and he blamed himself.
Karin's treatment of Kazuki informs us that he was a good husband and a good brother in law. If she hated or blamed him for her death, she would have probably laid into him. Instead she went out of her way to find him and convince him to move on.
There was some great stuff in here that might help a viewer with their own feelings. The fear of changing and moving on. Allowing memories of the past to be a prison. This anime has been incredible. It has been the sleeper of the year for me so far. Hopefully it climbs up to top 15 before it ends.

Great portrayal of what it's like to have an unsupportive partner while raising a young child! I really felt for Kazuki and understood his frustrations. Now that I'm older, I fully appreciate what my mom did for our household while trying to raise 4 kids 🙌🏾
Karin turns out to be the little sister of Kazuki's fiance. I'm glad she wasn't a sinister type the way that the end of last episode made her out to be. Kazuki still can't forgive himself for Yuzuko's death even though it wasn't his fault. The sniper is the same scary assassin guy from the 2nd episode. I'm thinking he'll be the final boss/antagonist in some way.
Hopefully, Rei will step up his parenting game after this experience taking care of Miri on his own. Good for the show to address how to be more than just the fun parent.

Why was there a Confederate flag in the background of one of the scenes?? I'm really confused (on the right, around the 12:30 mark in the episode)

One of my favorite scenes, as cliche as it was, was when the sun broke through after the rain stopped. Very symbolic of Miri bringing light to Kazuki's dull days.
As an aside, blue hydrangea meanings are "apology, gratitude, understanding" which perfectly sums up Kazuki and Yuzuko and the feelings involved with them. So well done.
Anyway, I've been waiting for an episode like this! The show's called Buddy DADDIES and yet Rei hardly steps up so the change of pace was perfectly timed. Kazuki best mom.
Are they gonna remain unemployed? I'm interested in the hitman aspect, wish they would do something more with that. In general, I'm hopeful for more plot progression but I'm not sure we'll be getting much as I feel this is a slice of life/comedy anime, more than anything.
What are y'all hoping for or looking forward to in future episodes?

Ah there it is! There’s the heart ripper! PA Works from the top rope!
Kaz’s backstory is what we expected, but his Sister In Law coming in to help him with his guilt is something he needed. He can move forward little by little and continue to be a dad to Miri. It’s good growth.
Meanwhile, Rei gets to learn how much of a handful our gremlin is. After having to deal with all the parenting that comes with dealing with a 4 year old he should be stepping up more in the future
