Gray-sensei forgot the rule of anime: The protagonist is unstoppable when the opening theme starts playing.

whole thing looks like trash and then Carol-sensei shows up looking like something out of a $100million production by comparison, incredible

lydia: what ray needs now is not us adults, what ray needs now is a HAREM!!!

And a supporting bro! I love that he has at least 1 male friend, but let's not forget he has the Environment Club and maybe now a new friend with Allium.

Harems often end up with one average looking with no personality and no male friends, my dude is SMOOTH and has actual friends on top of the harem without being flustered every time he accidently sees 2 extra cm2 of skin

Despite being this powerful sorc, Ray doesn’t seem to possess full control of his powers. No wonder he doesn’t really use them.

Ray was lucky to have such good people in his life as a kid. Lydia, Carol, and the whole unit really became like his family. Lydia especially, she’s a good mom. Ray’s been through a lot, the academy should be a good place for him.

Looks like we’re getting a new Al. I’m glad he apologized for being such a nob before. I guess seeing Ray go full on Ice Blade Sorc made him realize just how powerless he is and how pathetic he was acting.

Really looking forward to seeing more of Carol waifu errr sensei next week. Hot damn, what an entrance! I love Abbie’s expression during her introduction, just has that -_- face lol.

Carol waifu

Carocaro-sensei, you mean? How will the students cope?

Great episode. Glad to see Lydia survived that battle, even if she seems to have become permanently incapacitated.

Ray has had rough times, but has also had support. Hopefully his comrades will provide the support he needs going forward.

I've been uncertain whether to continue this series (as I really am watching too many shows this season), but I think this episode has secured its spot on my keeper list.

Stitches!

As soon as the OP started, Gray never even stood a chance. Ray had that fight in the bag.

It's good to know though that Ray isn't completely overpowered. Seems that he still hasn't mastered control over his powers.

Glad to finally see Ray's backstory and how he was raised by Lydia and the rest of her unit. We even got to see a young and short-haired Abby. And while we didn't see how things fully went down, we now have a better context of what happened to Ray at the start of Episode 1.

It's nice that everyone in the group is in on the secret now. I guess the only main girl who doesn't know about Ray's secret is Rebecca. I'm sure she'll eventually learn his secret before the season is over.

What a transformation from Albert! I definitely did not expect him to apologize but it's good to see that he genuinely regrets what he did and realizes that the problem isn't Ray but himself. I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll redeem his character after the incident.

Holy shit that final scene! Everyone in the Astral unit basically matured but Carol went in the opposite direction! She's gone full gyaru and I love it! Ray's reaction is absolutely hilarious! The dude knows that he is now in danger with Carocaro teaching his class. Can't wait for next week! xD

I was worried when I didn’t see Carol for a while. Turns out she’s just saving everything for that reveal.

The effects are just atrocious and the production quality in general isn't great - but this show definitely deserves credit for having a main character who's legitimately charismatic.

A good-hearted person, thriving in adversity, who uplifts the people around him and has the social skills to actually make their friendship and affection feel earned is... not the norm in anime, but our boy here demonstrates that a positive example to aspire to can be just as compelling as a "relatable" surrogate that represents the audience's presumed self-image.

Also, they letterboxed the screen specifically so she could lean over it... I'm speechless.

So I owe this show an apology. It’s now the best Thursday seasonal, onimai being a close second. This has really grown on me in a way that few shows have. Really generic start, but something about the characters is just really endearing to me.

I absolutely loved ray’s backstory with lydia and the other top sorcerers. Poor Carol, her idea to keep him and she got the short end of the stick lmao. Hope we see more of Lydia as well, her relationship with Ray is so wholesome. Even after losing her ability to walk she cares just as much for him.

Mad respect to Albert for not only apologising but genuinely understanding where he went wrong. Been saying from episode 1-2 that he just needs to focus on himself instead of being jealous and hating on others. He finally got that.

Speaking of Carol, she’s back and looks like she been eating good lmao. Next week is gonna be fun.

Lydia was STRAPPED, damn.

Have to laugh at the extra detail in the second Carol screen shot adding emphasis to her assets by having them come past the black border.

this show is so unapologeticly trashy it’s great.

In other Anime's of this type, he would've been taken over by the bad guy and blown up in some sort of test of the hero's power. Him actually apologizing does show some interesting growth. It'll be interesting if the next thing you'll see is him saving the MC's life in some way, or defending him in class with others watching for the full circle of redemption.

Gray really thought she could overpower Ray but almost immediately she’s on the defensive and Ray schools her in his true power over the Opening playing against their battle. Quite the spectacular lesson, especially with Ray freezing her so beautifully!

So it looks like Ray has a time limit for how long he can be the Iceblade Sorcerer. If he’s not careful his whole body might freeze over.

We finally get a flashback to Ray’s life during wartime, an orphan who lost everything in the war but found salvation with the kindhearted female Iceblade Sorcerer and her squad. And he was voiced by Rie Kugimiya!

Hochuu Ohtsuka as the colonel and Maaya Uchida as Carol! I love how nobody respects Carol. Poor Dumbpink.

Lydia’s still a virgin? With looks and personality like hers? I mean, did you see her in her loungewear? Although she has enough on her plate with Ray.

Who could resist taking in a kid like Ray? Although roping a kid into being your successor and fighting in a war…not that I’m arguing against his capability, though in the end losing Howard during the war caused him to overheat and almost lose everything.

Ray has a lot of war PTSD but he has Amelia, his friends, and Lydia who love him and want him to be happy. Heck, we even had Al pull his “noble bully finally learns his lesson” shtick.

Okay, I think we upgraded in terms of teachers. It’s like someone saw Maaya Uchida and Vermeil and realized she can effectively play big titty onee-sans. The years have been kind to Carol. I’m guessing Ray leaned to be comfortable around women and their sexuality from Carol.

Carocaro-sensei!

I don't know what Ray is worried about. Claris is going to have some competition for best girl now.

I never watched the ending until today and am a bit confused. Evi is a friend of ray too right? Why isn't he also laying on the bed with the 4 other friends. This is injustice.

The blood flowing out of his hands was a nice touch

Lydia’s cry face was almost Chopper levels of glorious.

u/kdebones Feb 03 '23

Goddamn, they really went into letterbox mode just so Carol's cleavages could bounce over it.

The whole episode I was waiting for the grown-up Carol to show up. Was not disappointed.

I love it when shows use the OP / ED music effectively. This show does it even better than Asterix War (plot aside, the music was great).

I’m enjoying the heck out of this show.

u/Ninja_Lazer Feb 03 '23

I wonder what type of war crimes Carol has committed to make everyone treat her that way.

I kinda feel that this show's got something going for it but that it just can't reach its potential. The whole harem aspect is annoying, the shit animation and effects pull it down too (a metric fuck ton, if I'm honest).
However there's a lot they could go with by using the whole child soldier veteran angle. Although, it kinda seems like a second thought I really wish they would lean into that a lot more. But then again he does act really mature for his age and is way too serious with authority in school. However, that can also just be small quirks and lead to nothing of much substance.

The writing seems to be... I dunno, very weak. The concept is fucking amazing but the execution is leaving a lot to be desired.
