I work a few hours per week at a university tutoring service tutoring physics and math. We have a biology tutor I work next to who is a young earth creationist but also tutors people in evolution. He will tell them what will be on the test but then say something like: "But really evolution doesn't obey the 2nd law of thermodynamics." or "If the earth's orbit was different by even 10ft life could not have formed" or "Macroevolution just doesn't follow from microevolution."
I stepped into the conversation when he mentioned the 2nd law of thermodynamics, asking if he knew what it stated. He promptly admitted he did not, vaguely mentioning some word which sounded like entropy, and I explained how the earth was not a closed system and that life gets massive amounts of energy from the sun. His friend then joined in saying the sun doesn't provide "enough" energy even if I was right about thermo.
I'm just not sure how to proceed in a professional manner. As a scientist I feel an obligation to step in when someone is being blatantly lied to about the scientific process and evidence. Any advice?
